Women's Fit Boxing - Next 5 week sessions begins Monday, Oct 23

October 20, 2017 To the Tri-County Community, Fall is a busy time in most schools, but at Tri-County we not only begin the year welcoming our freshmen, but begin to look towards next year's freshmen as we entertain eighth graders. We get off to a fast start and don't slow down until Thanksgiving or so. When you add a Coordinated Program Review by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as well as the kickoff of a self-study for next year's New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation visit, it can boarder on overwhelming. In true TC fashion the students, faculty, and administration have risen to the challenge and we are on track and moving forward. On October 26th and 27th we will welcome district eighth graders to Career Days during the school day as they visit us for tours of the facility. On November 9th we invite the eighth graders to visit in the evening with their families for our 8th Grade Open House. At 8th Grade Open House we formally kickoff the application program for next year's incoming freshmen class. Homecoming this year will be November 18th the Saturday evening before the Cougar Classic Thanksgiving Game against the Old Colony Cougars on Wednesday evening November 22nd at Bellingham High under the lights. Fall sports are in full swing and several of our teams have either qualified or are close to qualifying for tournament spots this season. The Girls' Volleyball team has a 13-1 record and has already qualified, and both Boys' and Girls' Soccer are a win away from qualifying. Our Cross Country and Golf teams are starting to prepare for league, division, and state competitions as well. We had our first Program Advisory meeting of the year, and I want to thank all of you that participated in the evening assisting us in providing valuable industry input into our vocational programs. It was one of the largest turnouts we have had for the event. Please mark Saturday, December 2nd on your calendar for our annual Showcase Spectacular as we open up the school to the public for this wonderful community event. This is our third Showcase Spectacular, and we look forward to welcoming all of you into the school for a visit.  We look forward to seeing you! FHS field hockey tops Mansfield, football falls to Attleboro

Field Hockey = Franklin, 7 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final
– Junior Cassi Ronan registered four points to help the Panthers roll to a big win on the road. Ronan scored a pair of goals and set up two more in a win that qualified Franklin for the state tournament. Freshman Victoria Quinn netted a pair of goals while sophomores Erin Walsh and Olivia Mazukina and freshman Amanda Lewandowski each scored once.

"Not every game can be summed up by just one quarter, but the third quarter of Friday’s contest between Attleboro and Franklin essentially told the story. 

The Bombardiers ran twice as many plays as the visiting Panthers over the first 10 minutes of the frame, and found the end zone three times, turning a close game into a 37-18 runaway win and securing Big Blue a playoff berth. 

“We made the plays,” said Attleboro head coach Mike Strachan. “We made some adjustments at halftime that worked for us. And just overall I thought we played physical. I think that wore them down a little bit by the end. 

“We came to win. We had a good week of practice and now we have to build off that. I’m proud of our team – I’m proud of the special team, proud of the offense, proud of our defense. We just have to build off of it and see where the chips fall now.”

Franklin Interfaith Council Presents Refugee Immigration Ministry

The Franklin Interfaith Council invites the community to a presentation by staff from Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM), a nonprofit organization that supports immigrants and asylum seekers in partnership with local faith communities. "Lt. Keith Darling sat in his office at the fire station on Friday afternoon listening to the scanner for the last time before he departs on his latest hurricane relief mission. On Sunday, he leaves for a two-week deployment to Puerto Rico to aid in the island’s restoration efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria. 

Once Darling lands in the US territory, he is unclear of his next move. 

With pride and a bit of anxiety, Darling explained that he is not sure where on the island he would be or what he would be doing. He said there would more than likely be no electricity, which means no air conditioning, and no internet access for the most part. But most concerning to him, it means limited contact to his wife and two children. 

“I guess the biggest problem anyone would have trouble with is not knowing what’s going to happen,” he said."

In the News: MBTA on suicide alert; transportation and carbon emissions

"THE ISSUE: Since July, trains have struck and killed 11 people in Massachusetts. THE IMPACT: The MBTA is working with suicide prevention organizations and other partners to identify ways to reduce accidental deaths and suicides on its tracks. 

A recent surge in the number of suicides and accidental deaths on Massachusetts train tracks has transit officials and suicide prevention advocates searching for answers. 

“I can’t tell you why there’s been this increase on the railways,” said Steve Mongeau, executive director of the suicide-prevention organization Samaritans. “One of the challenges in the suicide prevention arena is there has not been a significant amount of research done specifically on railways.”

MBTA commuter rail at Franklin/Dean Station

"THE ISSUE: Transportation is the state’s largest source of carbon emissions. THE IMPACT: State leaders are soliciting input on strategies to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. 

In the face of President Donald Trump’s proposals to loosen environmental protections, Massachusetts leaders are doubling down on the state’s commitment to fight climate change. 

The state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and Department of Transportation plan to hold a series of listening sessions across the state to solicit public input on environmental issues such as reducing carbon emissions from vehicles and making the state’s transportation infrastructure more resilient in the face of climate change. The listening tour will feature sessions on Oct. 31 in Boston, Nov. 2 in Worcester, Nov. 6 in Amherst and Nov. 9 in Brockton."
