New York Times: "How Restaurant Workers Help Pay for Lobbying to Keep Their Wages Low"
"NEW: The NY Times reveals that low-wage restaurant workers have been unknowingly funding the industry's powerful lobbying arm, the National Restaurant Association, as it worked to kill minimum wage increases around the country.
Here's how the scheme works: " https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615379667825065986
"In 2007, the restaurant lobby (sometimes called "the other NRA") bought ServSafe, an online food safety training company.
It then lobbied states to require restaurant workers to take those trainings, producing a reliable stream of paying customers."https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615379959824134145
"Since 2010, 3.6 million workers have paid for ServSave courses, providing $25 million to the NRA—enough to fund all of its lobbying costs, the Times found.
The funding extracted from everyday workers dwarfs the amount that some of the NRA's large corporate donors provide." https://twitter.com/MorePerfectUS/status/1615382543385202688

Town of Franklin begins planning to update the Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP)
The Town of Franklin has begun the process of updating the Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) for the 2024 - 2031 update. An OSRP allows the town to strategize how to optimize, expand and improve open space and recreational facilities/ offerings by creating annual goals throughout a duration of 7 years.
To ensure the goals in the OSRP are reflective of resident priorities, we will facilitate a Comment and Feedback period through June 2023.
Residents are encouraged to explore our open space and recreation areas and be on the lookout for our friends Connor the Conservation Beaver and Ryan the Recreation Racoon! They'll be featured at select open space and recreational locations and they will be asking for your feedback to help us create the vision for Franklin's recreation and ecocentric spaces! This is one of the many ways the Town is supplementing the OSRP comment and feedback period which will run through 2023. Primary engagement is outlined below…
Public Engagement Opportunities | Timeline |
---|---|
OSRP Resident Survey: Residents participation in the survey will allow town staff to craft a vision for the OSRP that is reflective of resident priorities. The survey will be available digitally and physically at the 1st and 2nd public hearings. | February 2023 - April 2023 |
Public Hearing 1: Attendees will learn more about the Open Space and Recreation Plan, review the progress from the previous 2016 OSRP as well as review and provide feedback on the OSRP priorities drafted by town staff for the 2024 - 2031 OSRP. | February 2023 |
Public Hearing 2: Town staff will present the 2024 - 2031 OSRP goals and objectives based off of resident input from the first public hearing and other outreach mechanisms. | April 2023 |
Public Hearing 3: Town Staff will present a draft of the 2024 - 2031 OSRP that has been informed by additional resident input following the conclusion of the public hearing and other outreach mechanisms. | June 2023 |

Redistricting Advisory Cmte reviews 4 scenarios, raises others, additional meeting added to timeline (audio)
FM #918 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 918 in the series.
This session of the radio show shares the Franklin Public Schools Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting held in hybrid format with folks at the FHS Media Center on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 as well as some members who participated remotely.
Given this was a working session, the major whole group sections of the meeting audio is what is shared here. There is one break in the audio when
The breakout discussion was held at each table
The break is indicated by about 4 seconds of music (replacing about 25 minutes of table discussion) then the group discussion resumes. I had anticipated a readout from each table (similar to what was done in previous meetings. That was not the case tonight.) The group discussion resumed with next steps, an additional meeting announced (some confusion around which date) but confirmation the slides, agenda, etc would be sent to the committee members with the survey form for their feedback.
Quick Recap
4 scenarios were presented based upon the building blocks from prior session. A fifth was acknowledged as not an option, albeit disputed by at least one member of the committee (closing another school)
Additional scenarios were presented as the realizations occurred on what was happening in each of the scenarios. Those raising such scenarios were advised to write it up for the feedback, in the survey to be sent to the Committee
The next session will cover these scenarios with demographic projections and the additional scenarios raised (2 middle schools, moving 5th grade to join 608 grades)
As there was no readout from each of the table discussions it was hard to tell what the sense of the scenarios was. Stay tuned for the next meeting; either Feb 2 or Feb 7 was mentioned, whichever it is will be confirmed
The edited meeting audio recording runs about 57 minutes. Let’s listen to whole group discussion position of Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting
