Only In Boston: an impressive map of breweries, cideries, distilleries and wineries in MA

Only in Boston tweeted on Friday

"A comprehensive map of all breweries, cideries, distilleries and wineries in Massachusetts."

Note: In the sample check for Franklin, only 2 of our 3 establishments are listed. La Cantina is left off the listing that does include 67 Degrees and Glen Pharmer. Impressive may be more accurate than "comprehensive".

"it’s never been a better time to consider a job in craft beer"

"Timberyard Brewing Co. spent much of 2020 pivoting and belt-tightening.

The East Brookfield brewer furloughed all five of its part-time servers last March, then tried for the better part of the spring and summer to find the hours to piece its staff together again.

This year, though, Timberyard has already hired six new servers and a kitchen assistant. Production has increased by 200%, as the brewery signed a new distribution deal and hired on its first assistant brewer.

Area breweries were rebounding from the pandemic well before the state lifted all COVID-19 restrictions. Now most breweries are not only on sure enough footing to hire their employees back, but also need to add more staff to prepare for the large crowds expected this summer."

“To get to this point feels so so very good”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"Craft brewers and the state’s beer wholesalers have reached a deal that would resolve a decade-long dispute over distribution rights centered around when a brewer can sever ties with its distributor, paving the way for the state’s smaller beer brands to free themselves from relationships they may feel are inhibiting their growth.
The deal, if accepted by legislators on Beacon Hill, would apply to almost all of the more than 200 craft brewers in Massachusetts. The one notable exception would be Boston Beer Company, brewer of Samuel Adams beer and the second largest craft brewer in the country.
Sam Hendler, one of the three founding brothers of Jack’s Abby Brewing in Framingham, helped negotiate the deal on behalf of the Brewers Guild.
“I’m really excited. There’s still some anxiety because we don’t have a signature from the governor on the bill just yet. We are anxiously hopeful for everything to play out over the next two weeks,” Hendler said on Saturday."

In the News: drought continues, craft brewing in Hopkinton

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Occasional showers with above normal temperatures in the past week did not help drought conditions in Massachusetts, according to the weekly report by the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday.
The report shows 37.83 percent of the state is still in extreme drought, the second highest category of drought. That figure is unchanged from last week. More than 87 percent of the state is in at least severe drought, a slight rise from last week's figure of 83.7 percent.
There may be some relief in the next several days. Rain is forecast Thursday night through Saturday morning. More than two inches of rain could fall in some areas, especially with the risk of thunderstorms Friday night."

A small craft brewery, hoping to open at Water Fresh Farm, is seeking permission to serve its products to customers on the premises.
Start Line Brewery is set to open mid-November, said Edwin Twinney, owner and operating manager.
"We are just doing final testing and hope to be brewing soon," he said.
In the meantime, the company, CraftLife Brewing Co., will go before selectmen Tuesday night to seek the farmer-brewing pouring permit. Twinney said he already has a license to sell products for off-premise consumption.

Yankee Quilters Guild - Sep 13

Love to quilt or eager to learn? All area quilters are invited to attend the monthly meeting of Yankee Quilters Guild, a charitable organization which provides comfort quilts to those battling serious illness while offering an artistic outlet for those who love the craft of creating quilts from scratch. An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 13th, at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Church, 237 Pleasant Street, in Franklin.

Yankee Quilters meets monthly in Franklin but draws members from surrounding towns. Everyone is welcome whether they're an experienced quilter or just getting started. Quilters of all ages work together on charity quilts, exchange information and tips and techniques from traditional to modern, and learn from each other's work. Meetings are held at St. John's Episcopal Church on the second Tuesday of each month, with charity work, workshops, trips and other activities throughout the year.

The September meeting will include a trunk show of a member’s recent quilts, “show and tell” of work completed by members over the summer, and a “block of the month” swap open to all members. The theme for the September block swap is “Black and Orange.”

New members and guests are welcome at all meetings. The first meeting is always free for anyone who wants to find out what the group has to offer. There is a $5 fee for guests.

Membership year runs July-June; new membership is $35/year and returning members pay $25 per year.

For more information, email yankeequilters11@gmail.com or visit the group’s Facebook page -->>  https://www.facebook.com/YankeeQuilters/

Franklin Library: Coffee and Craft for Adults

Ladies and gentlemen, you get to have coffee and a craft in the afternoon today at the Franklin Library. The event starts at 1:30 PM. You'll create 'lovely table decor' using old screens.

Screens is not a term I am familiar with in this context. The dictionary did not help me either. Would this also be called a place mat?
