Flu Season is Here – Get Vaccinated Today.

Sent to you by Steve Sherlock via Google Reader:

DPH picPosted by Donna Lazorik, RN, MS. Donna is the Immunization Coordinator in the Division of Epidemiology and Immunization at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The best way to protect yourself and your family from getting sick this flu season is to get vaccinated.  This is true even if you were vaccinated last season.  Health experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older receive a flu vaccine every year.  That's because flu can be very serious – every year in Massachusetts, an average of 5,000 residents are hospitalized due to complications from the flu, resulting in up to 800 deaths.  The good news is that many of these hospitalizations and deaths are preventable.
Getting a flu vaccine is especially important if you or someone in your family:
  • Is pregnant
  • Has a chronic health condition like asthma, diabetes, or heart, lung, liver, or kidney disease
  • Is immuno-suppressed
  • Is very overweight
  • Is 50 years of age or older.
 Flu vaccination is important for children younger than 5 years of age, who are at higher risk of serious flu complications if they get the flu.  For the same reason, if you're a caregiver or household contact of children less than five years old it's important that you get vaccinated as well.
 The flu vaccine is safe, effective, and widely available.  There is more vaccine available this year than ever before!
 To find out where to get the flu vaccine:
  • Call your health care provider;
  • Contact your local health department;
  • Check with your local pharmacy; or
  • Visit the Massachusetts Flu Clinic website for a list of flu clinics near you.
 For more information, please visit www.mass.gov/flu or call the Department of Public Health Immunization Program at (617) 983-6800.

"You're never going to have 100 percent perfection"

The state Department of Environmental Protection "wants us to try to figure out what was wrong," he said. "We're doing that by eliminating those possibilities."
A routine water sample taken last Tuesday from a well on East Central Street tested positive for fecal bacteria, either E. coli or enterococci. The well was immediately taken offline and the town notified the public through a mass recorded phone call and a press release on its website.
No other samples have come back positive and residents do not need to boil water or take other precautions, Perrotta said.
Perrotta emphasized that the sample was taken before the water had gone through treatment.
"I think the important thing is that the treated water did not have a problem," he said. "That's why we treat it."
Before the sample was taken last week, a blockage developed in the culvert, which is under an access road to the well. A small stream goes through the culvert. The blockage caused water to build up, potentially making it easier for bacteria to enter the well. The culvert broke late last week, Perrotta said.

The following persons are eligible to receive the H1N1 vaccine consistent with Massachusetts Department of Public Health and CDC guidelines for vaccine administration:

Children in 9th through 12th grades.
All other Franklin residents who wish to receive the H1N1 Vaccine.

CDC FluView: H1N1 Activity

Sent to you by Steve Sherlock via Google Reader:

via Commonwealth Conversations: Public Health by Julia Hurley on 12/1/09

Every week the CDC analyzes information about influenza disease activity in the United States and publishes key findings in a report called FluView. There has been significant media coverage of the report released yesterday covering flu activity for November 15-21 citing a decrease in H1N1 activity. It is important to realize, however, that while activity has decreased in some key indicators it has also increased in others. For example, the report states that thirty-two states are still reporting widespread influenza activity at this time, including Massachusetts.

While some of these numbers make it seem that the H1N1 flu season has peaked, it is simply too soon to know if it is actually on the decline in Massachusetts. Every flu pandemic is unique so only time will tell if these downturns will continue. In the meantime, it is more important than ever that everyone continue to practice good health hygiene to help prevent getting or spreading any type of flu. Be sure to cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow instead of into your hand, and wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially after you cough or sneeze. Finally, be sure to get both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine as soon as they are available to you.

You can read the full FluView every week on the CDC's website at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/
