Santa is coming to Franklin Rec for some Breakfast on December 16th! We will have a professional photographer taking Santa photos. 

Registration is available on franklinma.myrec.com

Two times slots available on Friday, Dec 16; likely to fill up quickly!

Recommended for ages 2-5 years old.

"Join us for breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus!  This is a parent and child event where your child can choose to participate in several crafts and activities including making reindeer food, antler ring toss and creating a Santa selfie hat.  Breakfast includes pancakes, assorted fruit and muffins. Fee is per child."

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node: Updated Meeting Calendar & No Meeting Dec 15

Hello from the 350 Mass Greater Franklin Node. We are canceling the meeting that was scheduled for this Thursday, December 15, the third Thursday of the month. 

Come the new year we will return to our regular schedule of meetings on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, with meetings on January 5 and 19, 2023.         

We look forward to continuing the progress that we made in 2022. Here are two articles that look back on major accomplishments in Massachusetts and the United States over the past year. In Massachusetts, we are proud that 350 Mass played a major role in the passage of the new Act Driving Clean Energy and Offshore Wind.    

We encourage you to join our meetings in January, when we will discuss ongoing issues and actions, look at the 2023-2024 campaign adopted by 350 Mass, and consider activities in our region and communities that will promote and accelerate the transition to a just, equitable, and clean energy economy.       

We wish you and yours an enjoyable holiday season. We hope to see you in 2023.

"IMAGINE SWIMMING in a water so murky that you can hardly see your toes, a water laden with toxic algae, a water devoid of the marine life we know and love. This could be the reality of Bostonians within the coming years if stormwater runoff continues to pollute the Boston Harbor.

Impervious pavement, which prevents water from naturally seeping into the ground, allows water from storms to flow into the local waterways. This stormwater is often laden with garbage, nutrients, chemicals, and other pollutants that can negatively impact the health of the local waterways. The excessive amount of impermeable pavement in Boston enables an increased amount and flow of polluted stormwater into local waterways. This surplus of water can lead to flooding and catastrophic effects on infrastructure. To protect our waterways and houses, impermeable pavement in Boston must be replaced with a more eco-friendly permeable pavement."

In Kyiv, I saw Dante under sandbags – a modern image of the hell of war | Clive Myrie | The Guardian

"I took quite a lot of photos on my phone when I was in Ukraine this year, but this one jumped out at me as I was scrolling through them. Here we have Dante – the Italian poet, philosopher, writer – with his marble head poking up out of the sandbags. It’s in a park on Volodymyr Hill in the centre of Kyiv.

It’s not just an arresting image. Dante is a harbinger of the Renaissance; he’s a symbol of culture and learning. And that is the opposite of war, which is a regression to dark times. This is what Ukraine and Kyiv are having to labour under – and so Dante finds himself stifled by sandbags. Of course, one also thinks of the Divine Comedy and the seventh circle of hell, which is violence. That’s what the people of Ukraine have been enduring: a modern circle of hell.

The fact that Dante had to be covered with sandbags tells you everything – the Russians are attacking things that are nothing to do with a military campaign. That is a particular hell, when civilians are seen as legitimate targets for an advancing army. And as soon as I see this image, all of this floods into my mind."

Franklin Senior Center schedules Winter Wonderland - Dec 15

2021-2022 Record: 22-2

2021-2022 Finish: Reached Div. 1 Quarterfinal

Franklin has dominated the Kelley-Rex division for the past four years, which included a state title run as well, but with a lot of new faces jumping into the lineup this season, the league title race could be a lot closer this winter. The Panthers may not be able to overwhelm teams with size like they have in past few years, but an athletic core of players returns to play typically tough defense and get out and run on the break.

The focal point this season will be senior forward Katie Peterson. After a breakout junior year in which she led the team in scoring, the UMass girls lacrosse commit comes back as one of the top wings in the league. Her athleticism will be critical on both ends of the floor. Senior guard Bridget Leo is also back to run the offense and will be one of the team’s top perimeter defenders. Senior Lizzie Newman emerged last season as a solid rebounder and post defender and her outside shooting could be a major factor.

There are also several players who stepped in at times last year that will need to take on bigger roles for the Panthers this season. Junior Sasha Tracey gives Franklin good length on the wing and adds another athlete that can get out on the break and finish. Her improved outside shot will also help stretch defenses. Sophomore Chloe Fales is a newcomer to watch with her athleticism and ability to score at multiple levels.

“This team is working to find its identity and play unselfish basketball,” said Franklin coach John Leighton. “I have been very impressed with the leadership of our seniors who have stepped up and provided mentorship to our younger players to speed their integration into the team.”
