Happy Fourth of July from the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, we extend our best wishes for a safe and meaningful Independence Day.
On June 17, 2026, the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds marked this historic milestone by hosting an Open House celebrating the release of its fifth Notable Land Records publication, “We Remember America’s 250th Anniversary.” The event brought together members of the public to reflect on our nation’s founding and the important role Norfolk County played in the American Revolution. Highlights included a special live reading of the Declaration of Independence and displays showcasing historical figures, places, and events connected to our communities.

Franklin TV: Independence Day – Part 2!
We all have rights – and obligations.

Freedoms and Rights. Yes, we all have them. A wonderful thing.
In his 1941 State of the Union address (A hum-dinger IMHO) President Franklin D. Roosevelt championed The "Four Freedoms” as fundamental human rights. These are: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. I would add a fifth freedom as my nod to our general “Pursuit of Happiness”. We get to do what we want, including the pursuit of things frivolous – engaging in pastimes; satisfying our wants and so on. All well and good – in moderation.
(Bungee jumping? Not on my to-do list.)
However, some folks do make poor choices. Such choices can have negative consequences not only for the chooser, but for society as a whole. While society tries to be helpful through public health policies and guidelines, we as individuals have an obligation to play our part. This is the give and take of a free society.
The first order of business once the Constitution was penned – we added Ten Amendments as The Bill of Rights. As comedian George Carlin noted, “They are not The Bill of Privileges, - because privileges can be taken away.”
We do dearly cherish our rights, and many of us are quick to defend our rights in any personal discourse; especially in heated discourse.
That said, I wish the framers of our Constitution also included a companion set of Amendments call ed The Bill of Obligations. Why? Because freedom isn’t free.
When folks hear that phrase they recall the brave souls who gave their last.
However, in this uniquely great country that touts, ‘All Men Are Created Equal’, there are obligations that flow to all of us – equally.

RT. 140 (West Central Street) Lane Closure Alert: Monday night (7/6) through Friday Morning (7/10) 7 PM to 5 AM
From Monday Night, July 6, through Friday Morning, July 10, the contractor will install the sewer force main between Burger King and Dunkin Donuts. During this time lane closures and shifts will be in place as needed. Please use caution when traveling in this area and follow all posted signs.
RT. 140 (West Central Street) Lane Closure Alert: Tuesday (7/7) through Friday Morning (7/10) 7 AM to 3 PM
From Tuesday, 7/7 through Friday, 7/10, a second crew will reinstall sidewalks within RT. 140 (West Central Street). The work will be contained within the southbound lane from the area near Elizabeth's Bagels to Beaver Street. During this time, lane closures will occur as needed on this section of RT. 140. Please use caution when traveling in this area and follow all posted signs.
