The first few months of the year have been busy especially with committee work and preparation of the FY19 budget. As the budget comes closer I am looking forward to fighting for the tax payers best interest by eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, while returning as much aid to our towns and schools. Recently, I have voted to support tougher animal abuse laws, improve our state facilities across the commonwealth, as well as promote financial literacy in schools. Furthermore, I have had the pleasure of meeting various constituents from our district at my State House office or at my office hours. I appreciate hearing from everyone and learning of your concerns so I can do my job more effectively. Cameron, Walsh - "Players to Watch" and HockomockSports Preview for FHS Girls Lacrosse

HockomockSports has published the girls lacrosse "Players to Watch" and the team preview for the Hockomock League. We share the FHS items here and provide links for the full listing at HockomockSports


GIANNA CAMERON, SOPHOMORE – FRANKLIN

Franklin sophomore goalie Gianna Cameron made quite the impression during her rookie campaign as she helped solidify the Panthers defense on the way to another league title, a third Div. 1 East title in four years, and a spot in the state semifinal. Cameron, who was named to the HockomockSports.com First Team last spring, allowed only 5.9 goals per game and saved 58.2 percent of the shots that she faced to emerge as one of the league’s top goalies in her first season. With a loaded roster returning from last year’s team and several new faces ready to step right into the lineup, Cameron and the Panthers appear to once again be the team to beat in the Hockomock.

ANNIE WALSH, JUNIOR – FRANKLIN

Franklin junior Annie Walsh, the reigning HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year and an honorable mention for last year’s Player of the Year, will spearhead another loaded Panthers lineup in search of a sixth straight outright league title and seventh straight overall. Walsh scored a team-high 59 goals and added 13 assists as the focal point for the 22-2 Panthers, who went on to win a third Div. 1 East title in the last four years. Her play improved in the playoffs, as Walsh tallied 22 points in the postseason including 16 goals combined against Natick and Concord-Carlisle. A two-way player for the Panthers, Walsh also contributed 91 draw controls, scooped 53 ground balls, and caused 52 turnovers last season.

"Franklin has emerged not only as the top program in the Hockomock League but in recent seasons as one of the top programs in the state. The Panthers have won the Div. 1 East title in three of the past four seasons, although they have yet to find a way past the state semifinal and get the opportunity to play for a state championship. Despite being a team loaded with underclassmen again this spring, Franklin comes into the new season once again as the team to beat in the league and with state title aspirations. 

Reigning Underclassman of the Year Annie Walsh is back to spearhead the Franklin attack and create scoring opportunities for herself and for her teammates. One of the teammates that benefits is her sister Erin. The sophomore is a creative finisher around the crease and will be a top scoring threat again this year. Sophomore Gianna Cameron is back in goal for the Panthers after an impressive rookie campaign and senior Grace MacCallum is back to lead Franklin’s stingy defensive unit. Sophomore Kelsey MacCallum will be a player to watch in the midfield, while freshman Katie Jones is a newcomer that could make an instant contribution. 

“We are definitely still young, but now our youth has experience,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino. “The team is doing a great job so far of playing fast, smart and together. We have some excellent leadership in our senior class, and we are working hard every day to get better!”

USAF Airmen of Note Performing 4/30/18 in Franklin

"Airmen of Note" - Washington D.C. based premiere USAF jazz band returns to New England for the first time in more than a decade.

Internationally renowned "Airmen of Note" jazz band will perform Monday, April 30th at Franklin High School Auditorium - 7 PM, 218 Oak St, Franklin, MA. The free concert will honor local veterans, celebrating the legacy of the Air Force and history of jazz music.

The "Airmen of Note" is the oldest military jazz band, maintaining its reputation as one of the best big bands in the world since its start in 1950. 2018 marks the 100 year anniversary of some of our international partners' air forces … including Great Britain and Finland. This inspired a focus on international music for our next studio recording that will be included on this tour.

The concert is free, however tickets are required.

The "Airmen of Note" will also participate in educational clinics working the music students from Franklin's high school and middle schools prior to the performance.

Franklin Residents: Hydrant Flushing Begins 4/9/18

Hydrant Flushing Begins 4/9/18

The Franklin Department of Public Works, Water Division will begin its hydrant flushing program on Monday April 9, 2018. This program is conducted annually to improve Franklin's water quality and fire flows. Some hydrants will be flushed in the evening hours, while others will be completed during the day. Hydrant flushing will continue depending on water availability and system pressures.

Residents may experience temporary water loss or discolored water while hydrants are being flushed in their area. Even though the water may be discolored, it is still safe for human consumption.

Tri-County Regional Student Awarded Full Scholarship to Dean College

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce Jayme Martello, a senior in the cosmetology program from Franklin, has been awarded a $33,000 tuition scholarship to Dean College for the 2018-2019 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years/8 semesters of attendance at Dean College, providing maintaining at least a 2.7 grade point average. This is the twentieth year that Dean College is awarding the scholarship to a Tri-County Regional student.

Consideration for the scholarship is based on a completed admissions application, a Tri-County senior in good standing, superior academic record, teacher recommendations, interviews with a Dean College admissions representative and Tri-County School Counselors, and extra-curricular activities including employment. Jayme was awarded the scholarship based upon many of her accolades. Jayme is employed part-time at Texture Salon in Medfield where she is a cosmetology assistant and receptionist, and she also works part-time at the Outpost Farm in Holliston. Jayme is very driven and has maintained a 3.95 GPA. Jayme plans to pursue a degree from Dean College in Business Management.

“Jayme Martello has maintained a remarkable record at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School, said Larry Thode, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Dean College. “She has earned a 3.95 GPA while working two part-time jobs and had superior teacher recommendations. Dean College is looking forward to her being a part of the College community in September of 2018.”

Tri-County Regional Student Awarded Full Scholarship to Dean College

Though the scholarship has typically been announced at graduation exercises in the past, this year it has been announced earlier in order to meet the College’s acceptance fall enrollment schedule.

“We are honored that Dean College has provided this amazing opportunity to one of our students, and are proud to be involved in a rewarding partnership that continues to positively impact our community," said Stephen Dockray, Superintendent. “The scholarship program enables another Tri-County student to pursue a college education. Congratulations to Jayme from all of us at Tri-County.”

In addition to Tri-County, the College also awards a scholarship to a student who is a Franklin resident at Franklin High School, and to a student who is a member of the Hockomock Area YMCA.

Dean College awards more than $20 million in scholarships and grants annually to assist students in funding their educations. An astonishing 90 percent of Dean students receive some form of merit-based aid with an average award amount of $19,000 per year. Dean College believes in making a private college education as affordable as possible, therefore most awards are renewable yearly provided the student maintains satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.

Tri-County RVTHS, located at 147 Pond Street in Franklin, is a recipient of the High Schools That Work Gold Achievement Award and serves the communities of Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Plainville, Seekonk, Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.

FHS boys lacrosse drop game to BC High

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 3 @ BC High, 6 – Final 
– Franklin scored with just under five minutes left in the half to cut the deficit to 2-1 but the Eagles netted two more goals before halftime to lead 4-1 at the break. BC High scored two more in the third to go up 6-1 before Franklin scored twice in the fourth. Chase Tanner scored twice while Nitin Chaudhury scored once for the Panthers. Senior goalie Connor O’Rourke had a strong game in net as well.

“The Addams Family” on April 6 and 7 at Franklin High School

Devyn Forcina, Editor of Pantherbook, lets us know of the forthcoming student musical performance of "The Addams Family" at Franklin High School.

"Annually, Franklin High School has presented entertaining, enjoyable and inspiring spring musicals. This year, audience members will definitely be treated by the upcoming performances of “The Addams Family” directed by Mrs. Lonati, on April 6th and 7th. 

In the past, I have written articles about our spring musicals closer to the actual show date. In doing so, I have gotten to watch dress rehearsals in full costume, and see cast members totally off-book. The rehearsal I attended for this article was not as formal, however, the confidence and well-preparedness of the cast this early on was extremely impressive. Occasionally cast members would ask for a word of their script, but it seems as though only one word prompted an entire monologue. These students are very prepared."
