From the Franklin radar for regular readers, the exploits of the "Crazy Reading Ladies" at Horace Mann may be familiar. This article provides a nice recap of their insights in getting middle school students to read.

"The expectations of middle school are daunting enough without the added challenges for students with learning disabilities. Students who have difficulty with reading skills and comprehension find themselves at a disadvantage that has repercussions academically and socially. 

Fortunately, Horace Mann Middle School in Franklin, Massachusetts, has Erin O’Leary and Mary Cotillo, affectionately known by their students as “The Crazy Reading Ladies.” Erin is a reading specialist who provides intensive reading instruction while Mary is the assistant principal and a former 8th grade English Language Arts teacher who cultivates a schoolwide community of readers and literacy. 

In a recently published Bookshare blog series, Erin and Mary share their wildly successful techniques and philosophy on removing barriers and getting reluctant readers to succeed."

Attention high school seniors: Rotary Club Grant Application due May 31, 2018

As your high school experience is coming to a close, it is time to contemplate, plan and make decisions that will affect your future. Part of that process is determining how to pay for education. The cost of furthering your education is high but the failure to obtain additional knowledge will cost you even more. Our members understand this and recognize the significant expense and sacrifice that often accompanies its pursuit. With this in mind, the Rotary Club of Franklin, as it has for many years, continues to offer graduating high school seniors from Bellingham, Franklin, King Phillip, Medway and Tri-County High Schools an opportunity to receive a grant towards the expense of higher education.

The Rotary Club is an international service organization that is dedicated to world peace through service to others and an increased awareness of people’s needs though education. Based on this premise, each application for the Franklin Rotary Club Grant is evaluated on their community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. This is a grant that is being offered to help defray college expenses in your second semester of your freshman year. The committee will let you know if you have been selected for a scholarship before you leave for college, but to actually receive your check, you will need to send in your first semester’s transcript.

‘End of the Line – How it Starts.” - May 24

The SAFE Coalition, with sponsorship by the Rotary Club of Foxboro and Infinity Family Care, PC of Mansfield, is pleased to present a play entitled ‘End of the Line – How it Starts.” The program is intended to help our community bring addiction into the light and to talk about it.

Improbable Players will perform “End of the Line - How it starts,” a short play followed by a talkback and Q& and A. Based on true stories, the play is performed by actors in long-term recovery. Through education and reducing stigma, their mission is to stop addiction before it starts and help end the opioid epidemic. The show is appropriate for anyone 6th grade and up.
