FHS Cameron, MacCallum, A Walsh and E Walsh named Girls Lacrosse All Stars, E Walsh Underclassman of the Year

Please note that the HockomockSports.com awards are selected by our staff. They are completely separate from the Hockomock League All-Stars. Players are listed alphabetically by position.

HOCKOMOCKSPORTS FIRST TEAM

Gianna Cameron – Franklin – Goalie
Franklin sophomore Gianna Cameron makes it two years in a row on the first team after another strong season between the pipes for the Panthers, helping them to another Kelley-Rex division title and another perfect season in the Hock. Despite facing one of the most difficult schedules in the state, Cameron backstopped the league’s top defensive unit, which allowed nearly 30 fewer goals than any other Hock team. She finished the regular season with the top goals against average, at little more than five goals per game. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Gianna was solid in the cage again for us this spring, and ended the season with a 6.1 GAA. She is a true competitor and we are excited to have her back in net again next year!”

Grace MacCallum – Franklin – Defense
Franklin senior Grace MacCallum is once again on the first team after another excellent season leading the Panthers on defense. The Fairfield University-commit is one of the best in the league at reading the opposing attacks and her vocal leadership helped her fellow defenders stay locked in. With MacCallum at the point of the defense, the Panthers allowed 127 goals this season, which was the best in the league by nearly 30 goals. MacCallum was also selected as a Hockomock League all-star by the coaches. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Grace was the biggest leader for us both on the defensive end and off the field. We are going to miss her presence, energy, leadership and passion!”

Annie Walsh – Franklin – Midfield
Franklin junior Annie Walsh, last year’s HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year and two-time honorable mention for Player of the Year, was the leader of the Panthers attack this spring, spearheading the offense and being he team’s primary playmaker. Walsh led the team in the regular season with 56 goals and she added 15 assists for 71 total points, helping Franklin win a sixth straight league title and continue its unbeaten league run to more than 70 games in the process. Walsh was also a major factor off the draw and in the defensive aspects of the game. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Annie again was a huge contributor for us all over the field. I am excited for her senior year… the best is yet to come from her!”

Erin Walsh – Franklin – Attack
Franklin sophomore Erin Walsh, the 2018 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year (see below) followed up her strong rookie campaign with an even better second season on varsity, becoming one of the top offensive threats in the league. The Boston College-commit tied for seventh in the league in points during the regular season, scoring 53 goals and recording 24 assists this spring (both totals good for second on the team), and had a strong playoff showing to help the Panthers get back to the Div. 1 Central/East semifinal. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Erin did a great job as an attacker/midfield for us this year. She really stepped up her feeding ability, while also being a threat as a scorer.”

"Franklin sophomore midfielder Erin Walsh has been named the 2018 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Underclassman of the Year after helping the Panthers clinch a seventh straight Kelley-Rex division title, sixth outright title in a row, and extend their league winning streak to more than 70 games.
Walsh was tied for sixth in the league in scoring at the end of the regular season with 77 points. She was eighth in the league in both goals scored (53) and assists (24), while playing against one of the state’s most difficult schedules. The Boston College-commit also had a strong state tournament, helping the Panthers once again reach the Div. 1 Central/East semifinal.
“Erin is one of the most talented attacking players in the league and arguably the league’s best and most creative finisher,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “If she gets the ball anywhere near the crease, she is going to find a way to get off a shot. It is a lot of fun watching her attack a defense and find ways to score.”

FTC Scam Alert: Scammers create fake emergencies to get your money

Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information
by Carol Kando-Pineda
Attorney, Division of Consumer and Business Education

Scammers try to trick you into thinking a loved one is in trouble. They call, text, email, or send messages on social media about a supposed emergency with a family member or friend. They ask you to send money immediately.

To make their story seem real, they may claim to be an authority figure, like a lawyer or police officer; they may have or guess at facts about your loved one. These impostors may insist that you keep quiet about their demand for money to keep you from checking out their story and identifying them as impostors.

But no matter how real or urgent this seems — it's a scam.

Franklin School For The Performing Arts To Host Open Houses - July 18, July 31

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) will host summer Open Houses on Wednesday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 38 Main Street in downtown Franklin. The community is invited to tour the facilities, speak with faculty and staff, and learn more about FSPA programs in music, dance and drama. Prospective students are also encouraged to schedule a complimentary trial class.

Founded in 1985 by Director Raye Lynn Mercer, FSPA has been dedicated to the enjoyment of the arts for all ages and to the artistic growth and development of young people. The school offers classes in all dance disciplines, acting, musical theater, voice, and instrumental instruction, whether for recreational enjoyment or serious study.

FSPA is also home to the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano. An extensive calendar of year-round performing opportunities features musicals, plays, ballets, voice and instrumental recitals, opera scenes, musical theater and dance company showcases, and more. Many FSPA students are also cast, by audition, in the affiliated Franklin Performing Arts Company’s annual season of shows. FSPA TALENT offers management services for young performers who elect to pursue professional opportunities.

FSPA is also proud to offer FSPA Academy, an academic alternative for students seeking a challenging curriculum in a supportive, flexible environment that encourages their creative goals. Provided Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in partnership with TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA), the program builds upon TECCA’s state-approved online curriculum offering Music Theory, math tutoring, field trips and more.

In addition to the Academy, FSPA also offers FSPA AfterSchool, an enrichment program for students in grades K-5, providing supervised recreational experiences, including games, crafts, and other creative arts activities. The program begins at the close of the regular school day, with transportation available from Franklin and Medway schools.

The FSPA summer session runs from July 2 to August 24, and fall classes begin on September 10. Registration is ongoing for all programs. Call (508) 528-8668 or visit www.FSPAonline.com for more information, including the FSPA catalogue, summer brochure and fall class schedule.
