Rep Roy: What's happening in the district - October 2019

House passes college closure bill

Rep Roy: What's happening in the district - October 2019Earlier this month, I took the House floor as Chair of the Higher Education Committee to advance a bill that will improve financial stability in higher education.

Designed as a response to the closing of Mt. Ida College in 2018, and a wave of other higher education closures, the legislation requires schools to post financial information online in a publicly accessible fashion, undergo regular budgetary screening, alert state officials if they face imminent closure, and more. The new accountability measures will foster the resilience of our institutions of higher learning and ensure that our students have access to the opportunities they are counting on.

This legislation supports and strengthens our higher education system and these vital engines of opportunity, and in so doing, protects the interests of students and families. I was proud to stand up for students, their families and the education community. When students invest in their future, they deserve to know that their college stands on a solid foundation.

Public Higher Ed Campus Tours

Public Higher Ed Campus Tours

The Joint Committee on Higher Education began started on its mission to visit all 29 public colleges and universities in the commonwealth on Friday, September 27. The tour began in North Adams at the beautiful Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, tucked in the Berkshires in northwestern Massachusetts.

Over the next several months, the Committee will be visiting each campus to get a first-hand look at the facilities, meet with faculty and administrators, and hear from students about their experiences. The tours will include meetings with campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students at each of the institutions. So far, we have also toured Berkshire Community College, UMass Amherst, and Greenfield Community College. On Friday, October 18 we head to Salem State University and North Shore Community College.

"It's ambitious, but when appointed to chair this committee, one of the very first things I did was to print out a map of the 29 public institutions in the Commonwealth to plan the trip," said Representative Roy. "We want to experience what life is like on these campuses which should provide a better context for the budget and legislative decisions we make. And the tours will provide an up close and personal view of each campus to give us a better perspective on the issues faced by those in each academic community."

You can see photos from our tours on Facebook by clicking here.

students no longer get nutrition education at high school given other demands for instruction

@FPSHealthPE Health Twitter feed more active, quarterly newsletter actually getting out monthly

wish list:

  • at least another 30 mins at elementary
  • middle school going to every other day
  • FHS, expand beyond the 9th and 10th grade levels

resources and schedule changes would both be required, both also require budget prioritization; had requested a PE/Health teacher last budget and didn't get it

5.2 FTE to cover 9/10; would need to add those numbers also to cover the 11/12 classes as well

there are some mitigations available via the advisory opportunities that are not direct instruction but can offer an alternative for those in need

Kristen sending letter later this week on health course with a video link and narration on the changes

In the Globe: "Familiarity has been key to the success of these dynamic passing duos"

In case you missed it, the Boston Globe has an article on football friendship for quarterback and receiver duos. One of the pairs in the article is Franklin's own Thomas Gasbarro and Jake Davis

"The same can be said for Franklin’s Thomas Gasbarro and Jake Davis, who began playing Pop Warner together in fifth grade.

As a junior, Davis caught five passes and two touchdowns from all-scholastic Nick Gordon, but this year, he’s leading D1 with seven touchdowns and has 387 yards on 23 receptions through four games.

While that spike in production can be attributed to increased opportunity, the fact that Davis is catching passes from old friend Thomas Gasbarro can’t be overlooked.

The best friends rode that momentum into a successful freshman campaign, then teamed up in the defensive secondary the past two years for the Panthers varsity squad."

The Brothers Four play the OCC Coffeehouse - Nov 8

50 Great Years! Now proudly celebrating their Golden Anniversary! The smooth musical sounds of The Brothers Four have delighted millions for five exciting decades. Folk Songs and Love Songs from America, Europe, Africa and Asia round out a fabulous repertoire of acoustic tunes old and new.

The Brothers Four have played thousands of college concerts, serenaded four U.S. presidents at the White House, appeared at countless Community Concerts, performed with symphony orchestras and jazz stars and entertained in dozens of foreign countries. Internationally acclaimed, they are truly "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World." Musical million-sellers for The Brothers Four include such releases as Greenfields, Yellow Bird, Try to Remember, Across the Wide Missouri. Their hit recording of The Green Leaves of Summer from the motion picture "The Alamo" was nominated for an Academy Award and they performed the song at the awards presentation for the global network telecast.

Fraternity brothers at the University of Washington in Seattle, The Brothers Four began singing together in 1956 and by the 1960s they had become America's Musical Ambassadors to the World. They were pioneers in the musical movement which came to be know as the "folk revival", and of the few groups from those times still performing today, they remain one of the best known and most popular. Their all-acoustic presentation consists of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and of course the trademark rich blend of their four voices. An evening with this quartet is an unforgettable time of pure, acoustic music and entertainment.

The full-time lineup of The Brothers Four, as solid as ever, now includes Mike McCoy, a veteran folk performer and singer/songwriter, a native of Washington State who has performed with The Brothers Four on special recording projects and occasional stage presentations since the late 1960's; Washington native, Karl Olsen, folk performer, choral director, writer and arranger, the latest addition to the group, blending his sparkling vocal and guitar skills smoothly into the sound of The Brothers Four; Washington State's Mark Pearson, guitarist, banjo player extraordinaire and singer/songwriter who has been such a strong and consistent part of the Group's signature sound since he originally joined in the late 1960's; along with Founding Member, Seattle native, Bob Flick, bass player, group leader and singer/songwriter.

Tickets for the concert are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, available at the church office, 508-384-3110, or at www.musicatocc.org. The event will be in the Sanctuary at the front of the church with entry from the door on Dedham Street (Route 1A). Parking is available behind the church and in the lot across the street. For more information and to be added to the mailing list, visit the website or contact Ken Graves, 508-384-8084, occmusic99@gmail.com.
