Hockomock Area YMCA: Inclusive Golf Team plays at TPC

On July 25, 2022 TPC Boston hosted a golf clinic for 13 participants of the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Integration Initiative. Participants were given tips from TPC Boston golf professionals, receiving instruction in putting, chipping, and full swing from professional staff at TPC Boston. Later, the newly trained golfers hit the links and played a couple of holes on the championship course in Norton, MA. 

The Hockomock Area YMCA’s Integration Initiative was established in 2004 providing children and young adults with special needs an opportunity to participate with their typically developing peers in all the programs, services, and activities offered at the Y. This inclusion program is designed to improve social skills, build self-esteem, increase physical activity, and independence and to enhance mutual respect among people of all abilities. To date, over 1,300 families have participated in the Hockomock Y’s innovative inclusive program. 

TPC Boston has hosted the golf clinic program since its inception in 2011, giving kids and young adults with special needs the opportunity to learn the game of golf and improve their skills with guidance from the club professionals. 

The day is set up for the participants to rotate through three stations – driving, chipping and putting. The club professionals are spread among the stations and actively coach participants so they can improve their golf game. Following the instructional portion of the day, the kids and young adults were able to play golf on the championship course, guided by the club pros.

While some of the participants were golfing for the first time, some of the kids had years of experience and were excited to return. The golfers from the Integration Initiative have developed their game so much that the Hockomock Y was able to start a 20-person integrated golf team in 2014, a program which is still going strong. 

The Integration Initiative was created to bring children with special needs together to participate alongside typically developing peers, and golf is a great outlet to make that happen. The social interaction, communication and patience needed for golf help emphasize the mission of inclusion. 

The YMCA looks forward to their upcoming Integration Initiative fundraisers later this year including the October 11th Legends Golf Classic tournament, also hosted by TPC Boston, which will feature sports legends from the Boston area, and their annual signature gala, the Legends Ball on November 15th, honoring Former New England Patriots Linebacker & Hall of Famer Steve Nelson and current New England Patriots Center & Captain David Andrews for their commitment to the YMCA and the community.

The Initiative has positively impacted over 1,300 families, a number which grows more and more every year thanks to events like this golf clinic.

"Ever hear a concert in the band room after school on a Friday afternoon? That is the FHS Unified Music Club jamming out together, and making memories.   

FHS Unified Music was started in 2018 by Franklin Alumni Max Allard, who wanted to bring FHS students of all abilities together, and share their love of music. The Club’s slogan, M3, stands for “Making Music Matter.” This phrase was adapted to emphasize the idea of inclusion coming in various forms. The club goes beyond just singing and playing instruments, by supporting each other in solo performances, or whole group karaoke.  "

FHS Diversity Awareness Club Hosts Geography Night -  Hailey Michenzie, Writer

"Franklin High School (FHS) traveled the world recently! FHS Diversity Awareness club hosted a Geography Night in the school cafeteria on Tuesday, March 1 from 5-8 p.m. On this night, students and community members came together to learn about each other’s culture, heritage, and sample some delicious food. 

Students shared fun facts, historical figures, music, and food that represented their culture. The night allowed FHS and the community to learn more about different cultures and heritages that make up our world."

"The courts are cleared, jerseys hung up, and laces untied – Another successful season is officially in the books for FHS Boys Basketball. After a year where the Panthers barely broke a .500 record and graduated their entire starting lineup, this inexperienced team came together and shocked many Hockomock opponents. A streaky group all year, the Panthers rallied off both seven and eight-game winning streaks this season before a 2nd round playoff loss to Catholic Memorial in the MIAA Playoffs two weeks ago today. To reflect on Franklin’s season, and look ahead to what could be next for the Panthers next season, I caught up with the team’s two Senior Captains: Sean Vinson and Will Tracey"

Baseball = Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final 

– Franklin scored once in the first and tacked on two more in the second and that was enough for its pitching staff as the Panthers picked up a 3-1 win on the road, clinching the Kelley-Rex division title for the second straight season. Senior Jake Fitzgibbons drove in a run to put the visitors up 1-0 in the top of the first and then junior Chris Goode and senior Nate Cooke each singled in a run in the second to make it 3-0. Attleboro scored in the bottom of the fifth, when Bailey Camacho (2-for-3) doubled and courtesy runner Hayden Hegarty scored on a single from sophomore Dillon James. Franklin sophomore Alfred Mucciarone earned the win with one run allowed on five hits and one walk, striking out four in five innings. Ethan Voelmicke threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts while James Kuczmiec got the save, striking out one in 0.2 innings. Dillon came on in relief for the Bombardiers and tossed five shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Softball = Attleboro, 4 @ Franklin, 12 – Final 

– Franklin scored runs in four of the seven innings, exploding for a game-changing six runs in the fourth inning to earn an upset win over visiting Attleboro. The visitors struck first in the top of the first but the Panthers took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the first. Franklin added one more in the third and then six more in the fourth to grab a 10-1 lead. Attleboro rallied for three runs in the fifth inning but Franklin put the game away with two more runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Carly Johnson-Pellegri had a big day at the dish, smashing a three-run home run in the fourth inning along with an RBI in the third (fielder’s choice) and the sixth (double). Senior Mary Collins added two hits (including a triple) and two runs, senior Gabby Colace had three hits (including a double) and scored two runs), junior Julia White scored twice and had two singles, and junior Aislinn Lavery used her speed for three singles, scoring twice. Georgia Harvey also had a triple for Franklin while Kelly Moussa had a strong day defensively in right field. For Attleboro, Hailey Perry scored twice and had a triple and both Meghan Gordon and Gabby Bosh had a hit and scored a run.

Boys Tennis = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final 

– Franklin dropped a total of three games as it rolled to a big win over visiting Attleboro. Senior Liam Marr notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles while Drew Mahoney won by the same score at third singles for the Panthers. Vayshnav Malhotra recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at second doubles and the tream of junior Thomas Broyles and freshman Jay Gorgas took care of business by the same scoreline at second doubles. Senior Anish Gundimeda and junior Sameen Shaik dropped a game in the first set but won six straight in the second set for a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first doubles.

Girls Tennis = Franklin, 2 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final 

– Attleboro swept doubles action and won at first singles to secure a 3-2 win at home over visiting Franklin. Junior Ella Lynch-Bartek earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at first singles for the Bombardiers, senior Rachel Rainey and junior Saharla Yusuf emerged with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win at first doubles, and the team of freshmen Maddie Fuscaldo and Kyra Johnson rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at second doubles to give Attleboro the win. Franklin junior Vedika Vinayak prevailed in a marathon match at second singles, taking a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) win while classmate Sarah Schiavo earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles.
