Cultural Connections: "Engaging Your Community" - October 10

Cultural Connections, a free arts and culture roundtable, will be held Oct. 10 at 7:00 pm in the Community Room at the Franklin Public Library. Anyone interested in arts and culture, from any organization in any town, is invited to attend. 

The subject of this roundtable will be Engaging Your Community, which will build on their May meeting of Defining Your Community (though attendance at the previous meeting is not required). 

How do you effectively engage with those in your community? What have you tried that has worked well, and what has not? How is your engagement different through social media vs email vs in person at an event? Is it enough to engage with those already committed to your cause or organization? They will discuss all of these questions and more.

Charter School: September Expansion Update

"Over the summer break our construction crew at our new site at 500 Financial Park drive has been hard at work. Steel delivery took place in early July and as you will see the physical construction of the building has commenced. 

Please enjoy aerial footage of the project taken in late August; you can see the outline of the building in orange steel, as well as the construction of the second floor in grey. The building will be complete in the spring of 2019 and will open for the 2019-2020 school year."

Fishing Derby raises $500 for Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids

On my walk Sunday morning, I discovered a fishing derby at the DelCarte Recreation Area that was just completing. Turns out it was part of a Capstone Project by Brendan Curley.

Brendan is an 8th grader at Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter School. He's in the final stages of a multi year (starts in 7th grade) Capstone project. Students are asked to think of a service learning project that is important to them and their family. They then write an action plan which gets approved each step of the way by their advisers. 

Brendan has a love for the ocean and enjoys fishing any chance he can get. He fishes both fresh and salt water. He knew he wanted to find an organization that helps the marine environment for future fishing enthusiasts! 

He discovered OPAK (Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids) and he decided to dive in to help them! Melanie Colby and Jeffrey Morgan embraced his project.

He set three goals for his project. Public speaking, to raise awareness, and to learn more about protecting the marine environments.

• Brendan first met with Jeffrey at a local Starbucks to learn more about the company.
• He held a "dry run" Fishing Derby (very impromptu) in the spring of 2018 to get his feet wet and have a better understanding of what he would need for the larger derby in the fall.
• He conquered his first public speaking action item - be a mystery reader in his sister's 4th grade classroom :)
• He attended an OPAK summer workshop in Chatham learning about the dangers of plastics in our ocean. He also led a small group during this workshop and had more public speaking opportunities.
• He contacted Medway Community Cable to shoot a promo video for his fishing derby to be broadcast/shared over Facebook.
• The culmination was the fishing derby (which you saw) this past Sunday. It ran from 8-10. We had approximately 50 participants. He raised $500 so far which will be donated to OPAK and be put towards a high school workshop for a school district in need. There were Medway Community Fishing T-shirts handed out - Karl Infanger runs this club and was a helpful resource fro Brendan, Bass Pro Gift cards given out to the first fish caught in the first hour and the second hour. As well as, a gift card for the most fish caught over 2 hours.

- Franklin’s Victoria Quinn scored with under 10 minutes to play to give the Panthers a win on the road at North Attleboro. Quinn got her stick on a shot from Cassi Ronan to put the Panthers up 1-0 with eight minutes left. Christina Luccini made a save on a penalty stroke early in the second half to keep the game tied.

– Franklin senior captain Matt D’Errico and sophomore Nolan Norton shared medalist honors, both shooting low-rounds of 39 to pace the Panthers past Attleboro. Jake Blaney chipped in with a 41 for Franklin while Ethan Johnson and Jack Handy led Attleboro, each shooting a 43.

Boys Cross Country = Franklin, 24 @ Mansfield, 31 – Final
– The top five runners finished within an 11-second span and the top 10 was all within a minute in a very exciting finish at Mansfield. Franklin junior Tyler Brogan crossed first, edging Mansfield’s Patrick Heavey by just two seconds. Franklin senior Mike Hagen and sophomore Nick Calitri took third and fourth overall while Mansfield’s Jason Windvogel rounded out the top five.

– Mansfield junior Jessica Alestock and sophomore Emma Lamson finished strong over the 800 meters to earn seventh and eighth, respectively, clinching the win for the Hornets. Hornet sophomore Tessa Lancaster was first overall, jumping ahead early and never looked back. Julia Fenerty was the first Panther to finish, taking second overall.

In the News: Horace Mann leak damages auditorium; Well #2 offline for e. coli

"After last Tuesday’s heavy rain storms, Horace Mann Middle School officials are assessing water damage done to the stage and music department. 

“During those heavy rains and flash flooding, the interior courtyard at Horace Mann became flooded with water due to a clogged drain,” Franklin Superintendent Sara Ahern said during the Tuesday School Committee meeting 

A large amount of water seeped into the school, settling in the pit of the auditorium, she said. The water flooded the stage and seeped into the entrance to the band room, as these were the lowest points. 

“It didn’t extend beyond into the office areas or classroom hallways because of that depression in the floor,” she said."

"During a routine check of the 12 public water wells in Franklin this week, one was flagged as containing a low level of the bacteria E. coli. 

The Department of Public Works emphasized that the well has been shut off to the public supply and that it is actively working to fix the issue. Water well No. 2 was taken offline and water to the affected areas has been diverted to other mains for now. 

Human or animal wastes can cause E. coli contamination of water supplies. Microbes in the fecal matter can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. 

In a statement, the town said there is no emergency and no need to boil water before cooking or drinking."

Reminder: Franklin Federated Church - Birthday Celebration - Oct 14

On Sunday, October 14, Franklin Federated Church will host a birthday celebration commemorating the formation of the First Congregational Church of Franklin (1738), the First Baptist Church of Franklin (1868) and the subsequent federation of the two churches (1938).

Original church council ledgers dating from 1846, artifacts from the church’s historical room, a pictorial roster of ministers since 1738, and photo albums depicting church members and activities from 1938 to present will be available for perusal during the event. 

A short humorous skit, “The Music Wars”, written by Church Historian Lyn Pickhover, will be performed as part of the regular service. The skit is based on an actual event in church records from 1738, the records of which are now on permanent loan to the Congregational Library in Boston.

The Franklin Federated Church is located at 171 Main Street, Franklin, directly opposite the Common. Services are held on Sundays at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

Franklin Art Association: October 3 features Vincent Crotty

The Franklin Art Association will meet on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street in Franklin. 

Refreshments and social time will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by a short business meeting and a demonstration by Vincent Crotty, an oil artist born in Ireland, and now residing in the Boston area. Crotty's work has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the John Stobart Foundation in Boston, and plein air competitions internationally. 

FAA meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month, September through May, and are free and open to the public. For more information log on to www.franklinart.org
