Celebrating India's Independence Day - Aug 17 at the Franklin Historical Museum

The Franklin Historical Museum will be hosting a one-day learning event (originally planned for two days, but now refined into just one) for Saturday, August 17 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM (immediately following the Museum's regular 10-1 Saturday hours).

Celebrating India's Independence Day
Celebrating India's Independence Day
The program draws inspiration from the twin summer independence days of the United States (July 4) and India (August 14). While the two nations are very different in many ways, a common connection to British legal and business practices as well as widespread use of the English language provide much common ground.

Planned activities on August 17 include:
  • Opening remarks, welcome
  • National anthems of the USA and India
  • An overview of Indian Culture, History, and common threads with Europe and the USA
  • Dance - an introduction to the meaning and practice of dance in India.
  • An introduction to  Yoga, Meditation and Ayurveda
The last part of the program will be an interactive opportunity for attendees and presenters to share ideas and ask questions.

Representative Roy Endorses Register of Deeds O'Donnell for Reelection

State Representative Jeff Roy endorsed Register William P. O'Donnell for reelection as Norfolk County Register of Deeds.

"Register O'Donnell has been in the forefront of offering legislative solutions needed to modernize Registries of Deeds in Norfolk County and across the Commonwealth. His efforts have made a difference," noted Rep. Jeff Roy who represents the 10th Norfolk District, which includes Franklin and part of Medway, in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Register Bill O'Donnell responded to the endorsement stating, "I've been fortunate to have worked with Jeff on a number of key legislative issues. His legislative leadership has helped the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds set a Gold Standard for customer service."

Bill O'Donnell is the Register of Deeds for Norfolk County and serves as an Assistant Recorder of the Massachusetts Land Court. Since he took office, Register O'Donnell has substantially improved the Registry's operations by making it easier through technology for the public to access more than 13 million land-related records at www.norfolkdeeds.org by bringing the Registry to communities through local office hours, and by protecting landowner's documents through enhanced cyber security measures and anti-fraud programming.

O'Donnell's modernization efforts and management skills have been widely recognized. An effective administrator, O'Donnell kept the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds operational every day during the COVID-19 crisis, and under his leadership, the Registry staff won an award for their outstanding service during the pandemic. The Norfolk Registry of Deeds was the first in the state to allow for electronic filings of real estate documents in Land Court, thanks to legislation O'Donnell spearheaded into law. He was also the first Register in New England to transcribe old land documents recorded at the Norfolk Registry of Deeds between 1793 and 1900 into a clearly readable format, winning praise from two-time Pulitzer Prize author and historian David McCullough who stated," ... you are making an important contribution and I send my warmest congratulations."

The Democratic Primary is September 3, the day after Labor Day. If you would like to know more about Register O'Donnell or his reelection campaign, please go to www.billodonnell.org.
