A Credit to Health:

The Health Effects of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

The opportunity to live a healthy life begins long before a person shows up at the doctor's office or hospital; health begins where people live, learn, work, and play. State policy can improve health outcomes by enhancing the conditions in local communities and the economic security of families. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit for lower-income working families. Research has found that, in addition to helping families to make ends meet in the short term, the EITC can improve health outcomes for children, adults, and neighborhoods in the long term.

The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center's new report, A Credit to Health: The Health Effects of the Earned Income Tax Credit examines some of the key ways the EITC affects people's health.

Studies find the EITC is associated with improved prenatal and infant health. A $1,000 increase in the maximum EITC, for instance, reduced instances of low birthweight by 5.6 percent. EITC-eligible households are also found to spend relatively more on healthy foods like fruits and vegetables during months when most EITC benefits are paid. The report looks at the EITC's effects on low birthweights, gestation time, educational outcomes, and the health of mothers and other adults.

19 Medical Careers Students Celebrated with Pinning Ceremony

Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School friends and family members joined Medical Careers instructors, Suzanne Dodakian, Paula Hutchinson and Anne-Marie Guanci in honoring senior students for all their certifications and accomplishments with a pinning ceremony.

Since beginning their Medical Careers program, students received the following certifications/training:

Sophomore year: American Heart Association's First Aid and CPR, OSHA, Dean Vaughn Medical Terminology, and the Alzheimer Association's Dementia Care training.
Junior year: Certified Nursing Assistant.
Senior Year: Home Health Aide Training, AHA Health Care Provider CPR with AED, and some students completed First Responder Training.

The pinning ceremony honored nineteen seniors in the Medical Careers Program. The students awarded their pins are:

19 Medical Careers Students Celebrated with Pinning Ceremony

Tri-County RVTHS, located at 147 Pond Street in Franklin, is a recipient of the High Schools That Work Gold Achievement Award and serves the communities of Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Plainville, Seekonk, Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.

FHS baseball, softball and both lacrosse teams posts wins on Thursday

Via HockomockSports we share the results of the FHS spring sports action on Thursday, May 3, 2018.

Baseball = Sharon, 0 @ Franklin, 11 – Final
– Bryan Woelfel went six innings to pick up the win for the Panthers, striking out two and allowing only two hits. Will Pacheco threw a scoreless seven and struck out two to finish the game for Franklin. Brendan Rivera, Cooper Ross, Jake Noviello, and Alex Haba each scored a run and drove in a run in the game, while Jake Macchi scored three times in the win. Ben Schwartz and Max Tarlin had the two hits for the Eagles.

Softball = Franklin, 15 @ Sharon, 1 – Final (6 Inn.)
– Franklin broke the game open with a seven-run second inning to put the Panthers on the way to a third straight win. Jackie Cherry held the Eagles without a hit in her three innings in the circle, striking out seven. Cherry also went 2-for-3 with a triple, homer, and four RBI at the plate. Natalie Stott also went 2-for-3, drove in a pair of runs and scored three times. Gabby Colace went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Panthers and Macie Phillips threw three innings in her varsity debut, allowing only one hit and striking out three. Nickie Martinez drove in the lone run for the Eagles and junior catcher turned a nice double play from behind the plate.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 22 @ Taunton, 1 – Final

Girls Lacrosse = Taunton, 1 @ Franklin, 21 – Final
– Mairead Goguen scored two goals and had two assists for the Panthers, while Corinne Lewis had two goals. Kate Morse and Sydney Hawkins both scored their first goals of the season in the win.
