"stumbled across a bill of sale for a Franklin man"

"While every veteran of war is important, there are some, going back 200 years in history of this country, who have received no recognition for their sacrifices because of the color of their skin. 

Susan Elliot, a writing tutor at Dean College and history buff, took it upon herself to honor Charles Paine, a forgotten Revolutionary War veteran, this Veteran’s Day by placing a sign next the memorial on Franklin town common. 

The sign commemorates an African-American slave that served in the Continental Army from 1777 to 1780. Though historical documents prove he was a soldier, his name was omitted from the memorial, because he was also omitted from official enlistment records. 

“What got me fired up is that I went to the town common and he wasn’t listed,” said Elliot, who lives in Milford. “This is part of the whitewashing of history.”

Opioid Crises Forum - Nov 14

Opioid Crisis Forum is scheduled for the Bellingham Library Nov. 14, 7-9 PM

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office and the Bellingham Police Department, in conjunction with the S.A.F.E. Coalition, will be presenting a public forum on the opioid crisis affecting Norfolk County, as well as the rest of Massachusetts and the country. 

This past year, in Norfolk County alone, over 200 mostly adolescent and youthful citizens have died from this epidemic. Many more, of course, have been impacted - their families, their children, the justice and health systems.

The forum will present diverse and developing treatment and support factors that influence addicts and their families with the focus on Bellingham and Norfolk County.

In the News: schools wrestle with hate crimes; wild turkeys return

“We are trying to focus proactively on creating an inclusive culture and climate in a preventative way,” said Sara Ahern, superintendent of schools in Franklin, where swastikas were scrawled on school buildings and playground equipment three times last year and again earlier this month."

"For more than 100 years, there were no wild turkeys in Massachusetts. 

Hunting and increased development completely wiped out the wild turkeys, but in the past few decades, the large birds have rebounded in a big way. Turkeys are increasingly popping up in urban and residential areas. 

“It is a great success story we were able to get them re-established,” said Wayne Petersen, director of important bird areas for Mass Audubon. 

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife tried in 1911, then in the 1950s and ’60s, to bring wild turkeys back to the Bay State, but the attempts didn’t find success until the late-1970s. That is when adult turkeys trapped in upstate New York were moved into the Berkshires. The initial group of 37 turkeys took hold and thrived. As the wild turkey population grew, MassWildlife caught some of the birds and brought them to other parts of the state and turkeys soon became a re-established species."

Snappy Dogs helps Pour Richard's celebrate - Sunday - Nov 12, 2 - 5 PM

The delicious hot dogs (and homemade toppings) from Snappy Dogs will be at Pour Richard's on Sunday to help celebrate their birthday party.

Wasn't it only a few months ago that I wrote:

"The Silver Maple Common on King St, near exit 16 for i495 has three of the five business locations now vacant.  The drive through bank was occupied by TD Bank and they left a couple of years ago. The liquor store sold their business and liquor license to Pour Richard's who opened on 14 Grove St. Frankly, not a great location as it is somewhat out of the way but the facility is larger and they are making a good effort to attract the business they want."

No, it was June of 2013 and it is amazing  how time flies. Pour Richard's is still located "somewhat out of the way" but it is worth making the trip to! They have established themselves in the community. They help non-profits with fund raising. And they provide a good product, reasonably priced, with exceptional service.

Stop by Sunday, Nov 12 from 2 to 5 PM for tastings and, of course, the delicious hot dogs.

"Retired town council member Bob Vallee was recognized by the last remaining selectmen for his 32 years of service to the town. 

Paul DeBaggis and Jim Johnston saw the transition in town government in 1978, where Vallee then took the reins for the next few decades. Before that, Franklin had been under the leadership of a Board of Selectmen for 200 years, since the town’s founding. 

“Jim and I knew what it was like to be selectmen, and most of our service was in the old form of government,” DeBaggis said, standing near the counter at Vallee Jewelers on Thursday afternoon. “We both dabbled a little bit as town councilors, but nowhere near what you did.” 

Johnston presented Vallee with a certificate from the Massachusetts House of Representatives recognizing his past achievements and wishing him luck."

An expatriate New Yorker now living in Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman.  He is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. From his first record, Sparrow's Point (1992) to his current release, Careless (September 2016), Shindell has explored the possibilities offered by this most elastic and variable of cultural confections: the song. Richard is a part of the Cry, Cry, Cry trio with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky. They recently completed a reunion tour which included a concert at the Wilbur Theater in Boston. 2017 Official - Franklin Biennial Town Election Results

There is one correction that I could find to the election results shared for November 7. In the School Committee results, Precinct 6 for Cynthia Douglas changed  from 286 to 251 and overall from 2235 to 2200. That change in 35 votes cascaded through the totals for School Committee but there was no other impact.

2017 Official - Franklin Biennial Town Election Results

MBTA: Starting November 20: Commuter Rail schedule changes (not for Franklin Line)

Fall/Winter Commuter Rail schedules go into effect on Monday, November 20th. Schedules are now available on mbta.com. 

Please note that Haverhill, Lowell, Framingham/Worcester, and Providence/Stoughton are the only lines with changes made to train times. 

Additionally, all lines have been updated to incorporate severe weather service information and can be viewed on mbta.com on each line's schedule page.
Paper copies of the schedules will be available in the Boston-based stations (North Station, South Station, and Back Bay) on Monday, November 13th. 

For those who utilize the MBTA Commuter Rail application, please make sure to update the schedule in your application prior to travel on November 20th. When opening the application, a prompt will appear stating that a new Commuter Rail schedule is available. Please check the update button to ensure that the new schedules have been updated in your application.

"The street sign for Hennessey Drive was stolen for the fourth time on Monday night. A resident reported to police that the sign was missing from its post on Tuesday morning. 

The reason the sign has been stolen so many times, according to DPW director of operations Deacon Perrotta, is easy to speculate. 

“Someone wants to put it behind their bar or something,” he said. “Hennessey seems to be a very popular sign to steal.” 

Though the signs are not too expensive for the town to replace, it is time consuming for the DPW, and could potentially pose a safety threat for residents that live there."

"Voters elected three new faces - Melanie Hamblin, Eamon McCarthy Earls and Patrick Casey - to the Town Council in Tuesday’s election. 

A total of 3,913 residents took part in the town’s biennial election, in which the entirety of Franklin’s Town Council and School Committee were elected. 

Casey, with 2,463 votes, garnered the highest vote tally of the 12 candidates seeking seats on the nine-member council. Fellow newcomers Hamblin and Earls received 2,127 and 2,316 votes, respectively."

FHS volleyball playoff run ends in Hopkinton

From Hockomock Sports we share the results of the Franklin High School fall sports results on Tuesday, Nov 7.


Volleyball = D1 Central West = #6 Franklin, 0 @ #3 Hopkinton, 3 – Final 
– Franklin went on the road and gave the third-seeded Hillers a big test, especially in the second half, but came up short (13-25, 24-26, 18-25). Hailey Sanders had seven kills and a block while Meaghan Maguire added four kills and four blocks to pace the offense. Lauren McGrath finished with 24 assists, eight digs and three aces while Riley Marino had 16 digs for the Panthers.
