Boys Basketball = Sharon, 48 @ Franklin, 78 – Final
– Franklin scored 39 points in each half, building a double-digit lead by halftime and never looking back. Franklin sophomore Chris Edgehill scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Panthers while senior Paul Mahon added 14 points. Malik Lorquet had 13 points to lead the Eagles while Aaron Strong added 10 points.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 63 @ Sharon, 40 – Final
– The Panthers clinched a postseason berth with a win at Sharon. Ali Brigham led the way with 18 points, while Bea Bondhus added 12 and Megan O’Connell had 10 for the Panthers. Franklin coach John Leighton said it was a “great team effort.”

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 2 @ Ursuline, 1 – Final
– Regan Paterson scored a pair of goals to lead the Panthers to a road win.

Cultural Connections, a free arts and culture roundtable, will be held Feb. 1 at 7 PM at the Franklin Historical Museum, 80 W. Central Street, Franklin.

Athena is the Executive Director of the wonderfully vibrant Natick Center Cultural District, and Kelly is an integral part of the team at ArtWeek, a statewide arts festival sponsored by the Boch Center. 

Both of these amazing women have experience in creating strong partnerships between arts organizations, local businesses, and the community. They will present their thoughts on the subject, followed by an open discussion with you sharing stories of what has and hasn't worked for your organization, along with the opportunity to ask questions of others.

Register O’Donnell was Guest Speaker at Franklin Senior Center

As part of an ongoing effort to bring the Registry of Deeds directly to the citizens of Norfolk County, Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell appeared January 23rd as guest speaker at the Franklin Senior Center. O’Donnell gave an overview of the Registry, the principal office for providing real property information in Norfolk County.

Register O’Donnell also spent time warning seniors about an ongoing deed scam that is being perpetrated against all citizens of Norfolk County, young and old. “Norfolk County residents continue to receive direct-mail solicitations offering them a certified copy of their property deed for an exorbitant fee ranging anywhere from $59.50-$86.00,” stated O’Donnell. 

“Don’t fall victim to this deed scam. These companies are making outrageous profits. If a consumer knew that the Registry of Deeds would provide them a certified copy of a property deed for a charge of only $1.00 per page, plus an additional $1.00 for postage, they would never agree to pay these companies such an outrageous fee for service. The average price for a mailed homeowner’s deed by the Registry, usually two pages, is $3.00.”

A good portion of the address was also spent discussing the advantages of the Massachusetts Homestead Act. Register O’Donnell noted, “The Homestead Act is an important tool for homeowners as the law provides limited protection against the forced sale of an individual’s primary residence to satisfy unsecured debt up to $500,000.”

Concluding his remarks, O’Donnell stated, “I want to thank Karen Alves, Director of the Franklin Senior Center, Council on Aging board members and all the staff at the Senior Center who do an outstanding job serving the elderly community of Franklin.”

"Superintendent Sara Ahern has been going from school to school sitting in on classes, hosting forums, and meeting with parents and other stakeholders to learn as much as she can about her new district. 

Ahern highlighted her observations to the School Committee on Jan. 23, and while she had many positive things to say about the dedication of Franklin parents and teachers to their children, she also pointed out a few areas that could use improvement. Ahern took over this summer for Maureen Sabolinski, who retired at the end of last year. 

The report, part of Ahern’s entry plan to the district, is a compilation of observations she gathered by visiting all 11 schools multiple times to perform observations on about 164 classrooms and other workplaces."

"In the spirit of springtime, the Franklin Downtown Partnership hopes to find all of the ladybug sculptures purchased by business owners in 2014, so the metal bugs can scale buildings and keep park-goers company. 

Lisa Piana with the Downtown Partnership said the sculptures always bring smiles, and she hopes to see them all outside for everyone to enjoy. 

“They’re really fun to look at, each one is unique,” she said. “We thought it would be fun to walk downtown and see them in all different places.” 

Businesses, which bought the ladybugs from the cultural council about three years ago, should lend them for public display this spring, Piana said."

	Register O'Donnell Hosts Meeting on Electronic Recording of Land Court Documents Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O'Donnell recently hosted a meeting of Massachusetts Registers of Deeds and their staff relative to the enactment of a recent 2017 law which allowed Registries to electronically record registered land or Land Court documents. "In part, the Registers' meeting highlighted the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds use of technology when it came to improving the recording experience for our institutional users relative to electronic recording of Land Court documents. Our Registry was the first in Massachusetts to electronically record a registered land or Land Court document beginning on April 12, 2017. We started with electronically recording mortgage discharge documents and then expanded a few months later to all documents submitted to our Land Court including deeds, mortgages and Homesteads," noted O'Donnell. The Norfolk County Register explained that Massachusetts has two designations for recording property: recorded land and registered land/Land Court. "The majority of land is designated recorded land while a small percentage, approximately 20% here in Norfolk County, is defined as registered land. Land is considered registered land once a petition has been reviewed and adjudicated by the Massachusetts Land Court Department in Boston," noted O'Donnell. The electronic recording of recorded land documents has been in place since 2010 at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. However, due to the more stringent requirements associated with recording registered land documents, electronic recording of these particular documents could only take place with the passage of Chapter 404 of the Acts of 2016, an Act to Modernize Registries of Deeds, which eliminated the need to retain original registered land documents. The Act passed both the Massachusetts State House of Representatives and Massachusetts State Senate on January 3, 2017. This piece of legislation was signed into law and approved by Massachusetts Governor Charles D. Baker on January 11, 2017 taking legal effect on April 12, 2017. In conclusion, Register O'Donnell stated, "The Norfolk County Registry of Deeds is first and foremost an organization that is focused on customer service. Electronically recording Land Court documents saves our customers considerable time and expense, along with allowing Registry staff to be utilized in a more efficient manner. It's a win-win situation for us all."
