Franklin Food Pantry: Why our backpacks have no books

Newsletter
September 2018
Why our backpacks have no books

Relieving hunger. Nourishing lives.

Dear Friends,

This year, an extra special backpack will be going home with some
Why our backpacks have no booksFranklin elementary school students every Friday. It contains no books, no homework, no pencils. Yet, it may impact their ability to learn like never before.

The backpacks will be filled with child-friendly foods for kids in need. With no access to school-provided meals on the weekends, some families struggle to provide enough food for their kids. The food will help fill the weekend hunger gap experienced by some children in our community.

The Weekend Backpack Program is a partnership between Franklin Public Schools and the Franklin Food Pantry. The official roll out is underway this month to all elementary and ECDC students. Each school is coordinating its own sign-ups for interested families. The Pantry provides all of the food and coordinates volunteers to pack the backpacks and distribute them to each school every week. Names of students are kept confidential and are not shared with the Pantry. Through private donations, the program is funded by the Pantry at no cost to the Town of Franklin or participating families.

Children experiencing hunger have difficulty concentrating, are socially withdrawn and are less likely to excel academically. Our hope through the Weekend Backpack Program is to help provide enough fuel for learning so that students thrive in school - academically and emotionally.

We are thrilled to be part of this incredible collaborative effort with Franklin Public Schools that has gained the support of so many - School Superintendent Sara E. Ahern, Ed.D., elementary school principals, adjustment counselors, school nurses, teachers and PCCs. A true spirit of cooperation and commitment to the health of our community makes this program possible.

Learn more about the Weekend Backpack program, how others are getting involved, and some ways you can be a part of this worthwhile program.

Why our backpacks have no books
Warmly,

Erin

P.S. - I would like to give special thanks to Bristol County Savings Bank for its recent expansion grant to grow this program; and the Hockomock Area YMCA for the initial grant last year that launched the pilot program at Parmenter Elementary School. We are grateful for your support!

FHS football, girls soccer, and volleyball teams post wins on Friday

Game of the Week – Football

Franklin, 21 @ Milford, 0 – Final

First Quarter: No scoring.
Second Quarter: (F) Nick Gordon 28-yard pass to Ryan Driscoll, Parker Chevrant XP good.
Third Quarter: (F) N. Gordon 7-yard rush, P. Chevrant XP good; (F) N. Gordon 6-yard run, P. Chevrant XP good.
Fourth Quarter: No scoring.

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"On its opening three possessions of the game, Franklin managed about 30 yards of offense and turned the ball over twice. But the Panthers got one more chance to break the scoreless deadlock before halftime and made it count, scoring on the final play of the second quarter.
The momentum carried over into the second half, as Franklin would score on both of its possessions in the third quarter to break Friday night’s rivalry game with Milford wide open and pull away for a 21-0 victory that sends the Panthers into league play with a 2-0 record.

“It’s a big win for us,” said Franklin coach Eian Bain. “This is a tough place to play. To get out of here 2-0, and more importantly 1-0 this week and focused on this task, we’re going to enjoy it for 24 hours.”

Canton finally began its 2018 season on Friday afternoon and used a late surge in the second half to pick up a 2-1 win over visiting Franklin."
