Town Council hears of update on Open Space, discusses flag policy and leans toward an ad-hoc cmte to resolve that topic (audio)

FM #981 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 981 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the Town Council meeting held in Council Chambers on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. All 9 members of the Council were present in the Council Chambers.

Quick recap:

  • A License ownership transfer and change for the alcohol license at 7-11 Union St was approved

  • Farmers Market alcohol license for La Cantina Winery was approve

  • Conservation Agent Breeka Li Goodlander provided an update on the progress for the Open Space & Recreation Plan that is in process, 2 public hearings completed, a series of focus group meetings continuing, the final public hearing to review the draft plan is scheduled in June

  • The proposal for enabling the raising of the Pride Flag for June prompted a discussion on the viability of such a measure given the developing legal status and the fear it would open the door for other flags that many folks would not approve of. It generally was a rather good civil conversation except for the last commenter. The general consensus was for appointment of an ad-hoc subcommittee to further address the proposal for fute, especially since the current June Pride situation can be worked around satisfactorily

  • Approval for additional ARPA funding from Norfolk County was received

The recording runs about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Let’s listen to the Town Council meeting on April 26, 2023.

Drink Responsibly: La Cantina Winery (video)

One of the new video series produced by Franklin TV is called "Drink Responsibly." In this episode, Jim Derick talks with Bob Vozzella of La Cantina Winery about the development of his wine making process.

Franklin Matters sat with Bob earlier this year and you can listen to that conversation (about 40 minutes). They have also expanded to brewing some beer to provide that option for visitors to their backyard location.    https://www.franklinmatters.org/2023/01/talking-wine-small-business-with-bob.html

Second Sunday Speaker to celebrate Horace Mann - May 14 at 1:15 PM

In May, we celebrate Franklin’s Favorite son, Horace Mann. Our Second Sunday Speaker Series presentation will be The Life of Horace Mann. Born in Franklin and commonly known as the Father of American Education, Mann’s life from a young farm boy from Franklin, braiding straw for pennies to Brown University, to the State House and beyond is a story our town can be proud of. An educator, lawyer, abolitionist, orator and statesman, Mann gave much to many in his short life. Learn about his family life in Franklin, his education, friends, loves and his strong desire to establish free education to all.

Horace Mann
Horace Mann
Join us for the presentation Sunday, May 14th. Doors open at 1:00, presentation starts at 1:15. Then join us for coffee and cake as we celebrate the 227th birthday of Horace Mann. COVID-19 prevented us from celebrating Horace’s 225th, and he hasn’t quite forgiven us!

Visitors to the museum are asked to bring an item for the Franklin Food Pantry. Personal items such as shampoo/soap/razors/toothpaste, etc. or individually wrapped paper towels, among other items would be welcome.

We also encourage visitors to browse our gift shop and make a purchase in support of the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum and the programs they support.

The museum is located at 80 West Central Street, is wheelchair accessible and entry is always free.
