Healey Administration seeks funds for migrants, Augustus on The Codcast talks housing overall (audio)

"THE HEALEY ADMINISTRATION said it needs another $250 million to keep the emergency shelter program afloat and will probably need additional funds if the number of migrants coming into the state continues to rise.

Under the right to shelter law, Massachusetts is required to provide shelter and support services to homeless families with children and pregnant women. The budget for the current fiscal year, which is less than three months old, appropriated roughly $325 million to provide services to 4,700 families.

With an influx of migrants from other countries and fewer people transitioning out of the program because of a shortage of housing, the number of families participating has grown to more than 6,300 and the $250 million is needed to help cover that extra cost. The $250 million represents a 77 percent increase in funding."

Also this week on The Codcast the housing issue is discussed:
“I don’t think there’s any silver bullets,” Ed Augustus, who heads up the new Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, said on The Codcast. “There’s not one obvious thing that, geez, if you just did this, this would unlock housing production. But I think it’s a series of smaller policy changes, additional funding, and new partnerships and strategies that hopefully collectively help move the needle and get us closer to that 200,000 number.”

The FHS boys & girls cross country, boys soccer, and golf teams all posted wins on Tuesday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, Sep 12, 2023.

Boys Soccer = King Philip, 2 @ Franklin, 4 – Final
– King Philip pulled within a goal twice in the second half but Franklin was able to stay ahead, putting the game away with a goal in the 73rd minute. Senior Sean O’Leary converted a low header off a corner from Noah Cain to open the scoring, giving the Panthers the lead in the 29th minute. The lead doubled less than two minutes later when Wyatt Herndon won a battle near the end line and was credited with a goal after his cross was deflected off a KP player. The Warriors got within one in the 46th minute after good pressure from Jack Morgan resulted in an interception for sophomore Marco Amorim, and he quickly played Tommy Lomuscio in on goal and the senior buried a right-footed shot past the keeper. Franklin added to its lead in the 59th minute when junior Garrett Scagliarini sent a looping cross into the area to an open Brad Morin and he converted from in close. KP pulled close again in the 66th minute as Evan Barker found a gap in the defense with a through ball to Will Bowen and he finished to make it 3-2. Franklin put the game away just minutes later as Scagliarini’s pass found its way behind the defense and Herndon ran onto it and got enough of it to get past the keeper.

Franklin, 1 @ King Philip, 2 – Final –

Golf = King Philip, 160 @ Franklin, 155 – Final
– Franklin junior Caden Sullivan had his best performance on the links so far this season, earning medalist honors to help the Panthers secure a crucial division win over rival King Philip. Sullivan had a pair of birdies on the day to finish with a match-low round of 35. Liam Lewandowski (38), Tyler O’Brien (41), and Jack Nelson (41) rounded out Franklin’s scoring. Ethan Sullivan (38) and Evan Regan (39) anchored KP’s scoring.

Boys Cross Country = Attleboro, 37 @ Franklin, 22 – Final
– Franklin and Attleboro split the top four spots but the Panthers took the next three finishers to secure a win over the Bombardiers. Junior Jonathan Pink won the race in 17:02 just ahead of Attleboro freshman Owen Lacaillade (17:06). Franklin senior Jason Huff was third (17:08) with Attleboro junior John Blaisdell taking fourth overall. Franklin senior Joshua Diehl, junior Jack Halter, and sophomore Andrew Scotland took the next three spots.

Girls Cross Country = Attleboro, 43 @ Franklin, 20 – Final
– Attleboro junior Emilia Smith won the race but the next seven runners to cross were all Panthers to hand Franklin a season-opening win over the Bombardiers. Smith timed in at 19:29 to win the race. Alex Batla was Franklin’s top runner at 19:55 followed by Katie Sweeney, Fiona Morrison, Emma Pruitt, Emily Matteson, Carlie Walbert, and Gia Stoddard. Attleboro’s Alexis Cincotta and Alexa Frackelton rounded out the overall top 10.

MBTA adding trains to the Franklin line during peak periods beginning Oct 2, 2023

"THE MBTA’S commuter rail service operator is preparing to expand service this fall, adding late-night departures from Boston and more trains during peak periods on select lines to meet increased demand.

The commuter rail operator, Keolis Commuter Services, already offers service at roughly one-hour intervals through most of the day. The new schedule, which begins October 2, will add a late train from Boston on weekdays and weekends to accommodate people with unconventional work schedules or those attending late-night events.

On the Providence-Stoughton Line, the last train will now depart Boston at 11:55 p.m., 55 minutes later than the current schedule. Most other train lines will follow similar schedules. The Needham Line, however, is pushing back the last train on weekdays from 11 p.m. to 11:55 p.m., but retaining 10:15 p.m. for the last train on weekends.

Keolis is also adding trains during the morning and evening peak periods on the Lowell, Fitchburg, Franklin, and Worcester lines, reducing the one-hour interval between trains to every 30 to 45 minutes. For example, trains on the Lowell Line will operate every 35 minutes coming into Boston between 6:25 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. and every 30 to 40 minutes departing Boston between 3:55 p.m. and 6:20 p.m."

The NEW Schedules are not yet available but should be posted here when ready     https://www.mbta.com/schedules/CR-Franklin/timetable

Cheryl Wheeler, September 23 at the Circle of Friends

Cheryl Wheeler with Special Guest Kenny White

Cheryl Wheeler with Special Guest Kenny White

Cheryl Wheeler with

Special Guest Kenny White
September 23, 8 PM, $30

Cheryl Wheeler opens the Circle of Friends Coffeehouse's 34th season on Saturday, September 23rd at 8PM. Cheryl is known for her brilliant, often hysterical, performances and beautifully crafted songs. She'll have you rolling in the aisles one minute, then she'll take off her glasses, close her eyes, and sing a heart-breakingly lovely song that may bring you to tears.   Her entire concert is an emotional roller coaster. Cheryl will be joined by special guest Kenny White on piano and Kenny will also open the show.

"Rare artist...strong poetry, complex melodies, clever wit." -SingOut!

Cheryl's songs are often emotional portraits of people, leaving you with the impression that you know the characters. You find yourself being dragged into the song rather than standing outside and observing. Other songs by Cheryl are hilarious situation comedies.  This is always a sold-out show, so order your tickets soon.

The Circle of Friends Coffeehouse is a non-profit organization affiliated with Franklin's First Universalist Society. Concerts are presented in a smoke free and alcohol free environment at the Society's handicapped accessible Meetinghouse, 262 Chestnut St. in Franklin, and begin at 8:00 PM; doors open at 7:30 PM. Beverages and gourmet desserts will be available. Admission for this performance is $30. Please visit
http://www.circlefolk.org/ to purchase tickets or for more information.
