The Treasurer/Collector has posted over 60 outstanding checks amounting to over $22,000 to the Town of Franklin webpage. If you are on the listing, you can contact the Treasurer/Collectors office to begin the process of obtaining the funds.

MASS GENERAL LAW CHAPTER 200A SECTION 5: Subject to the provision of section one A, all intangible personal property not otherwise presumed to have been abandoned under any other section of this chapter, including but not limited to all certificates of ownership, dividends, stocks, bonds, money, drafts and claims for money and credit …. shall be presumed abandoned unless claimed by the beneficiary or person entitled thereto within three years after the date prescribed for payment or delivery.

CHAPTER 200A SECTION 9A: On or before November first of each year the treasurer of any city or town holding checks issued by said city or town which have not been cashed and which are deemed abandoned under section five may issue a written determination that it is in the best interest of said city or town to follow the procedures set out in this section.

Checks issued by the Town of Franklin that remain un-cashed are subject to the following actions:

1. Letters are sent to payee's of un-cashed checks along with an acknowledgement form for claiming the funds.
2. For checks over $100.00 an advertisement is placed in the local newspaper.
3. An un-claimed check list is posted on the web-site.

1. What if my name appears on the list, how do I claim my money?
Please contact the Treasurer’s Office

2. What happens if no one claims a check?
Checks that remain unclaimed after all the necessary steps have been taken are returned to the town's general fund.

3. I received notice of an un-cashed check, what is it for?
Checks issued from the Town of Franklin could be refunds of overpayments of taxes, payment of an invoice or payroll checks. You should contact the Treasurer’s office at 508-520-4950 for more information.

"Hate is difficult to track. 

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups across the country, has pegged a single group in the MetroWest and Milford area - Framingham-based Concerned Citizens and Friends of Illegal Immigration Law Enforcement (CCFIILE) – out of 12 groups in Massachusetts. 

The most recent numbers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which tracks hate crimes across the country, have 411 such crimes reported in Massachusetts in 2015. Six came from the Milford or MetroWest area, and none were as high profile as the Charlottesville, Virginia rally that ended in a woman’s death last weekend. 

That doesn’t mean those six incidents and one group haven’t been harmful, civil rights groups say."

Economic Development Committee - meeting audio - Aug 9, 2017

This internet radio show or podcast is number 131 in the series for Franklin Matters. This captured the audio recording of the Economic Development Committee (EDC) meeting held August 9, 2017.

EDC Chair Andy Bissanti opens the meeting ad after some discussion on the two agenda items with approval to bring them to the Town Council as formal proposals, the meeting adjourned..

Worthy of note, there were additional councilors in the room when Council Chair Matt Kelly stopped by just before the meeting. Tom Mercer got up and left, Debbie Pellegri remained. This becomes an item towards the end of the meeting when Debbie tries to ask a question. Per Peter Padula, a Town Councilor, not a member of the committee, can be present in the meeting as long as they do not take any active part in the meeting. THey can only observe. If they take part, then their presence can raise a question on whether the Council has enough members for a quorum. As there are four Town Councilors on the Committee (Chair Bissanti, Padula, Vallee, and Pfeffer), another participating Town Councilor raise the participation to five which is sufficient for a Town Council meeting.

In the News: Anne's Market to close; Vet Ruck Walk arrives Saturday

"With her husband sick at home, Anne Saunders headed down the street Saturday to grab an item that was sure to lift his spirits: an egg salad sandwich from his favorite spot. 

Saunders, of Franklin, said her husband visits Anne’s Country Market on West Central Street every few days to pick up lunch, stock up on cigarettes and beer and chat with the owners. Feeling under the weather Saturday, Doug Saunders asked his wife to bring home some comfort food from the store. 

This week marks a sad chapter for Saunders and other loyal customers of the store, who recently learned that after three decades, store owner Anne Brunelli and her family are preparing to close the market for good. 

In a message posted to Facebook last week, the business announced it would close its doors on Friday. While she’s happy to see Brunelli finally start her retirement, Anne Saunders said customers like her husband will miss the neighborhood market."

"It takes more than physical training to hike 200 miles across Massachusetts in three days carrying army sacks and armor; it also takes motivation and a purpose. 

Nine veterans, active-duty members and civilians will ruck across the state this week to spread awareness about the needs of veterans when they return home. 

“To ruck means to carry a heavy load,” founder of Warrior Thunder Foundation and event coordinator Darren Bean said. “We’ll either carry backpacks or body armor, simulating the burden that our veterans carry when they leave service.” 

The ruckers are scheduled to make their way through Natick around noon on Saturday. They plan to make a stop at the War Memorial on Main Street in Franklin to meet with veterans, citizens and officials in town at 6 p.m. Bean encourages everyone interested to attend and show their support."

"Three days before the 690th anniversary of St. Rocco’s death, four men carried a small statue of the medieval man down the steps of St. Mary parish, across the intersection of Church Square and Pleasant Street, through a school parking lot, and onto the field of grass and woodchips that has served as an annual fairgrounds for 39 years. 

One hundred people joined the short procession after the 10:30 a.m. Mass Sunday. Turning their backs to carnival booths that were selling Belgian waffles, clam cakes, calzones, and manicotti, they stood in a circle as the Rev. Brian Manning blessed the statue of a man who died in the 14th century – but still touches lives in the 21st. 

“He’s a patron of the sick, and there are many times when you’re not feeling that well or you’re hit with a severe injury or a severe sickness, you do turn to St. Rocco,” said Bob Catalano, 94, a Navy veteran of World War II. “He’s a healer of the sick. So we take advantage of it.”
