Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O'Donnell Delivers U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots

Dedham, MA- The Tenth Annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Drive at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds was a great success, according to Register Bill O'Donnell. "Every year people come by, and are so generous in their giving. This year we had a great bunch of gifts ranging from stuffed dolls to art supplies to racing cars and building blocks."

Register O'Donnell noted that during the past 10 years, approximately 1,500 toys have been collected by the Registry thanks to the generosity of Registry employees, title examiners and the general public "I would like to thank everyone for making the event such a wonderful success. Additionally, we are truly honored to partner with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in their Annual Toys for Tots drive which help makes the holiday brighter for millions of children each year," said Register O'Donnell.

On hand to deliver the toys to Master Sergeant Bill McCorkle were Register Bill O'Donnell and Norfolk County Commissioners, Peter Collins of Milton and Joe Shea of Quincy.

"STOW - With a whoosh, the flames, an inferno really, rose above the pool of water, feeding off a layer of liquefied natural gas. The heat was immediately felt by the ring of firefighter recruits who instinctively took a few steps backward. Soon they would have to walk forward, inching closer to the undulating orange column armed with a chemical fire extinguisher, urged on by an instructor and fortified by confidence in their training.

It was day 45 of their 50-day training program and the liquefied natural gas fire was the pinnacle in a progression of sterner tests, a very literal way to turn up the heat. They had already tackled fires inside concrete buildings, searched blindly in smokey rooms for hidden victims, run up and down stairs in full gear to prepare for a job that many did not describe as a vocation. For them, being a firefighter is an aspiration from childhood that grew into a passion to serve and join the brotherhood."

Franklin Almanac arrives at Franklin TV

There’s a new program in town. In fact, it’s all about the town. At Franklin TV we’ve launched our very own news-magazine program, Franklin Almanac. Like an actual almanac of information, it’s a compendium– of life in Franklin, produced and hosted (and written and edited) by our TV journalist Polikseni Manxhari.

See Almanac this week on All-Access TV. Almanac also has an introductory run weekdays at noon on our TownHall TV channel, Comcast11/Verizon29.

As TV news pioneer Edward R. Murrow opined, reporting the news on TV is like writing with a five hundred pound pencil. There’s a lot of preparation and location work that goes into producing even a single story. With our pilot program done and on the record, we are already ramping up for our second episode in mid-January. Our plan is for Almanac to be a regularly scheduled program in 2017 with new episodes every two weeks. Almanac will offer a review of key recent events as well as a look ahead to the upcoming, the new and the notable.

As we begin our new news endeavor, we want to give a nod of appreciation to Franklin’s volunteer Information Director, Steve Sherlock and his invaluable website Franklin Matters. "Head coaches Chris Spillane and Brian Shuman shared a similar sentiment following Saturday night’s game at the brand new Canton Ice House: more offense.

While the Panthers came away a 2-1 non-league win over the Bulldogs, Spillane has a handful of experienced forwards that were only able to register 15 shots in the game.

For Shuman, his Bulldogs created plenty of scoring chances, putting 23 shots on net but an inexperienced offensive unit was only able to convert once.

The bright side for both teams is that it’s just the first week and both Spillane and Shuman expect their respective teams – and one another’s – to improve in the coming weeks.

“We had it in little bits and spurts but nothing sustained at all,” Spillane said. “That was not one of our better hockey games, from the back end to the front end. I think we had only like 13 shots total which is insane for us. We have most of our returning offensive players back, we should be scoring four goals a game. It just wasn’t offensive game, nor a good defense game.”

FHS Girls Indoor Track tops Taunton

From HockomockSports we share the Indoor track results from the meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Saturday.

Indoor Track - Boys = Franklin, 36 vs. Taunton, 64 – Final

– Taunton grabbed first place in nine different events to pick up a win against Franklin. Dylan Lynch won a pair of events for the Tigers, finishing first in the 1 Mile (4:49.28) and the 2 Mile (10:06.78). Jadin Bruneau won the 55M dash (6.93), Lucas Alves was first in the 300M (37.85), Jimmy Hoye took first in the 600M (1:31.33), Ryan Leason (39-01.00), John Chretien (37-10.00) and Jared Taje (37-05.25) swept the shot put, Nathan Grant was first in the high jump (5-06.00) and Sam Krajewski won the long jump (18-09.25). Franklin won both the 2x400n and the 4×400 relays while getting a win from Nicolas Gnamen (2:50.74) in the 1000M.

Indoor Track - Girls = Franklin, 67 vs. Taunton, 33 – Final

– Franklin sophomore Halle Atkinson won a pair of individual races and anchored the 4×200 relay to a win. Atkinson won the 55M dash in 7.70 and took first in the 300M in 43.19. The Panther’s 4×200 crossed first in 1:52.80. Franklin’s Lauren McGrath also had a big day for the Panthers, scoring in three events. McGrath was second in the high jump (4-07.00), third in long jump (15-00.50) and second 55M hurdles (10.18). Taunton freshman Victoria Gravel was first in the 55M hurdles (10.10), senior Shannon Stokes won the high jump (4-09.00) and Samantha Tichelaar took first in the long jump (16-02.50).

6 FHS vs Milford basketball games result in 5 wins and 1 loss

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 63 @ Milford, 54 – Final

– Franklin limited Milford to just four points in the third quarter, turning a close game into a double-digit lead. The Panthers led 32-30 at halftime but had a 50-34 advantage going into the final quarter. Junior Paul Mahon and freshman Chris Edgehill each scored 12 points for Franklin, who had six players with eight points or more. Milford senior Anthony Arcudi led all scorers with 17 points while classmate Zach Tamagni added 10 points and junior Kayden Kelley had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Victories all around! Freshmen won 66-31. JV won 58-49. Varsity won 63-54. Hard fought battles!

"Boy Scout Troop 99 has competed in a robotics tournament at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in recent years, called "Savage Soccer." This year's entries into the tournament were quite successful.

In the qualifying stages of the tournament, the two teams finished 10th and 11th, respectively, out of 30 teams overall. The scouts are routinely competing with and against high schools with robotics classes and clubs.

The team that finished 10th overall, made up of Andrew Giacalone, Sam Fiorillo, Nitin Tiruveedi, Vignesh Jangareddi and Abhiram Kollipara, were invited to join a coalition that competed in the elimination portion of the tournament. As part of that coalition, the boys won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches, and competed twice in the finals, falling just short in the end."

Stating that food pantries throughout Norfolk County direly need your assistance during this holiday season and throughout the winter months, Register William P. O'Donnell announced a last call for non-perishable food donations as the Registry of Deeds Annual Food Drive is about to come to a close on Friday, December 30^th.

"Project Bread estimated that 1 out of every 9 households in Massachusetts is considered food insecure. In Norfolk County some of our less fortunate neighbors continue to face economic hardship. We see this each month in the foreclosure numbers. These people and others are truly hurting. It could be from a lay-off, a medical catastrophe or just a case of bad luck," noted Register O'Donnell.

The Register noted that this time of year, which brings joy to so many, also creates stress for others. And local pantry officials agree. "During the holiday season families in need face so many difficult challenges," noted Eileen Hickey of the Norwood Ecumenical Food Pantry. Her thoughts were echoed by Cas Casados of the Weymouth Food Pantry who said, "When the demand rises in the winter, food drives are crucial to helping meet the need. In the cold winter months, we see an increase in the number of families coming to our doors as some of our neighbors struggle to afford food with rising energy bills."

Non-perishable food items can be brought directly to the Registry of Deeds, 649 High Street, Dedham up to Friday, December 30, 2016. A donation bin will be set-up in the Registry building lobby which is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Suggested donations include canned goods, breakfast cereals, pasta, canned soups, jars of spaghetti sauce, toiletries and paper products.

Register O'Donnell concluded, "If you can't get here to drop off food, you can always check our Registry's website.at www.norfolkdeeds.org for the food pantry location in your community. Working together, we can truly make a huge difference this holiday season and beyond."
