2018 Friends of the Poor Walk successfully funds St Mary's St. Vincent de Paul
St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who was involved in the 2018 SVdP Friends of the Poor Walk. This year we were thrilled to see more than 110 parishioners and community members participate in the walk.
It was wonderful to see the Ursuline soccer team and many members of the Franklin High School field hockey team participate along with several of St. Mary’s confirmation students. The increase in participants and donations helped the SVdP to meet our fundraising goal!
One hundred percent of the donations stay in Franklin and will go directly to support any of our Franklin neighbors in need.
All of your help and contributions are greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Garelick Farms and The Knights of Columbus for their support and contributions of drinks and energy snacks.
Thank you again for your generous contributions and for helping us to work on our goal of “Neighbors helping neighbors.”

"A Franklin woman has been charged after a stabbing incident Thursday morning at her home on North Park Street.
Michelle Mangion, 45, faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and assault and battery on an intimate partner, according to police. She was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Wrentham District Court.
Police say the victim called them at 7:59 a.m. from Mangion’s home at 56 North Park St. When officers arrived, the victim was outside the home, bleeding heavily from the arm.
As an officer approached the victim, the victim allegedly said, “She stabbed me.” In the report the officer also stated that one eye appeared to be bloodshot with bruising. EMTs were called to treat the wound,"

"It appears that the monthslong hard work of four high school students to get the town to prohibit food establishments from dispensing prepared food in Styrofoam containers is paying off.
Selectmen voted unanimously last week to recommend adoption of each of the town’s Oct. 22 warrant articles, including the citizen petition article that seeks to prohibit local food establishments that require a permit to operate from dispensing prepared foods in disposable food service containers made from Styrofoam.
The Board of Health last week notified selectmen that it had taken a unanimous vote in support of the warrant during its meeting on Sept. 26."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)

Franklin Historical Museum: King Philip's Indian War Presentation (inside) and Scarecrow Contest (outside) - Sunday, Oct 14
NY Times bestselling author Michael Tougias will give a slide presentation on the war between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76 at The Franklin Historical Museum at 1:15 Sunday, October 14, as part of the Museum’s Second Sunday Speaker Series.
Tougias is the author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War), and co-author with Eric Schultz of King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict.
The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history.
Slides include battle sites, period sketches, historic markers, maps, and suggestions for visiting road-side history. Tougias also discusses Native strategy during the war and the challenges of writing a historic novel. Former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Massachusetts and member of the Wampanoag Tribe, Edith Andrews, is quoted on the novel's back cover, commenting that Until I Have No Country "captures the essence of the Native American." The novel includes adventure, romance, and intrigue while staying true to historical facts. A book signing will follow the presentation.
Tougias is the author and co-author of 21 non-fiction books including the national bestsellers Rescue of the Bounty, A Storm Too Soon, Overboard! The Finest Hours: The True Story of the Coast Guard’s Most Daring Rescue (to be a Disney movie), Derek’s Gift, The Cringe Chronicle and his award-winning book, There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse! (Misadventures of a Mountain Man Wannabe).
His book, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do is the recipient of the American Library Association “Editors Choice” award. More about the author can be found at www.michaeltougias.com

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the football game recap:
"Heading into Friday night’s contest against Taunton, Franklin head coach Eian Bain wanted to get as many of his skill players involved as possible to keep the Tigers’ defense guessing.
Senior quarterback Nick Gordon delivered with a near flawless performance, going 11-for-14 for 243 yards, connecting with six different receivers, and tossing four touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a dominant 42-7 win over Taunton.
Franklin was essentially perfect in the first half with Gordon completing all of his passes (7-for-7) and the team recording 254 yards of offense, scoring on all four of its drives for a 28-0 lead at the break.
“We got off to a very fast start and I thought we executed the game plan really well,” Bain said. “We try to think about players not plays so we wanted to get certain kids to touch the ball. We had a lot of different kids touch the ball tonight and that wasn’t by accident."

Planning Board: Public Hearing - Oct 15 for plot line clean up
"If Town Council supports the proposed zoning map amendment, DPCD recommends they refer Zoning By-law Amendment 18-820 to the Planning Board for a Public Hearing."The Economic Development Committee recommended that this measure come before the Town Council. The Town Council agenda for the Sep 5 meeting incorrectly listed the item as a first reading prior to approval. The supporting documents clearly stated it was meant to go to the Planning Board for their review and approval before coming to the Town Council to approve the zoning bylaw changes.
The zoning changes are something that Franklin has been working on. Some of the plot lines don't align with the zoning categories. The Planning Dept review the plot lines and zoning and makes a recommendation for approval. The Economic Development Committee reviewed the proposal, recommended some changes where a new subdivision would have gotten split into two different zones (it was changed to move to only a single zone) The proposal is now what is being discussed.
My own property happens to be involved in this measure. Our plot is split almost evenly between two different but closely related residential zones. To clean up the map, the proposal puts all of the plot in a single zone. Our plot was split between Rural Residential I and Single Family Residential III. The proposal moves our plot totally within the Single Family Residential III zone.
