The Strawberry Stroll on June 7 is a great start to your summer

The 20th Annual Strawberry Stroll is ready to go. This town favorite is set for Friday, June 7 from 4 to 8 PM. The rain date is Saturday, June 8, from 4 to 8 PM. The stroll is held on Main Street which will be closed to traffic so visitors can easily and safely walk. Come to downtown Franklin to start your summer!

Dean Bank’s staff will be serving the signature strawberry shortcakes under tents in front of the bank. Fresh strawberries donated and cut by Dean College will top hundreds of shortcakes and be completed with whipped cream. Proceeds from strawberry shortcake sales are allocated to the Downtown Partnership to help fund the event.

Here’s what else you can expect:

Booths will have fun activities for children, a variety of giveaways, delicious food, information about organizations and businesses, and fabulous strawberry shortcake.

Musical entertainment by Heath Nisbett playing acoustic guitar, 4 pm to 6 pm; Dom DeBaggis playing acoustic guitar, 6 pm to 8 pm; Feet in Motion Dance Studio offering two performances during the afternoon/evening. Radio station MyFM 101.3 will broadcast from 4 PM to 8 PM. Franklin Fire Department will have Touch A Truck, Sparky, and fire safety information; and Franklin Historical Museum will be open.

“Year after year this event attracts more visitors and vendors. It's always an exciting day to see so many people enjoying themselves and some strawberry cake,” said Kevin Johnson, Strawberry Stroll Chairman.  “What better way to kick off the summer than joining others and listening to live music on Main Street.”

Event organizer Franklin Downtown Partnership is grateful for the financial support from community businesses. This year’s stroll is made possible by the support of the following sponsors. Platinum Sponsor:  Dean College. Gold Sponsors: Camford Property Group, Inc., Dean Bank, The Enclave of Franklin Senior Living, Glen Meadows Apartments, Middlesex Savings Bank. Silver Sponsor: Notturno Home Services. Bronze Sponsors: Beaux Regards Photographic Art, Chestnut Dental, DCU, Eagle Stainless Tube & Fabrication, Fenton Financial Group, LeafFilter Gutter Protection, Peel Microspa.

Town Council Capital Budget Subcommittee votes to approve free cash allocations (exclusive audio)

FM #1208 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1208 in the series.

This session of the radio show is the audio recording of the Franklin, MA Capital Budget Subcommittee meeting conducted on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. All four members of the subcommittee were present: Chairperson Debbie Pellegri, Vice Chair Bob Dellorco, Ted Cormier-Leger, and Brian Chandler.

Town Administrator Jamie Hellen and Deputy Administrator Amy Frigulietti.

This short meeting was not set up for remote participation nor for Franklin TV broadcast. I did get there to make the audio recording available via Franklin Public Radio/Franklin Matters.

2 items on the agenda: one the approval for use of free cash for the operating budget. Not a usual occurrence but requires approval. The formal vote will also be part of the Town Council meeting Thursday as they close the budget hearing.

The second item was the creation of a stabilization account to set aside funds for the potential purchase of a building that wouldn’t be covered by the funds available from the Community Preservation Act. There was a brief discussion on this and then the vote to create and allocate the remaining $200,000 from free cash as the start point for funding the account.

The vote on both measures was 4-0.

The recording runs about 12 minutes, so let’s listen to this capital budget subcommittee meeting of May 22.  Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1208-town-council-capital-budget-subcmte-mtg-05-22-24

Dean College: "Center Stage with Michael J. Bobbitt"

On Saturday, May 18th, 2024, Michael J. Bobbitt delivered the keynote address at Dean College’s 158th Commencement Ceremony, where he told the new graduates that “the world is waiting for your creativity, your passion and your leadership. What you are given today—what you have worked hard for—is something only a few people have access to. Do great things with it.”

President Kenneth Elmore also presented Bobbitt with an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at the ceremony in recognition of his distinguished career and activism.

Bobbitt currently serves as the Executive Director of the Mass Cultural Council, and in this capacity is the highest-ranking public official in Massachusetts state government focused on arts and culture. Governor Maura Healey recently appointed Bobbitt to serve on both the Governor’s Advisory Council on Black Empowerment and the newly established Massachusetts Cultural Policy Development Advisory Council.
