Franklin Historical Museum: Beyond Just Hollywood OR Bollywood - Aug 17 & Aug 18

A look at the shared elements and differences between two great democratic nations

In recent decades, Massachusetts, and Franklin in particular, have seen a significant influx of residents with roots in India. Yet despite numerous shared values and aspirations many non-Indian people are only vaguely aware of Indian history and culture – and something similar is often true for immigrant Indians with regard to many aspects of America (and Franklin!).

On Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18, the Franklin Historical Museum will share programming that builds on history, honors India’s Independence Day, (celebrated officially every August 15), and will provide a chance for visitors to learn about what unites India and the USA with plenty of opportunities to learn about India and the Indian-American community in the area.

This program is different from many of our museum offerings and offers a chance to celebrate history while building community connections for today. Details will be posted on the museum Website as they become available. FREE (Donations encouraged)

Coming in September, a return of `Cinema 80’ ‘Silent Saturday’ films and a new musical performance series will also debut.  Chris Leverone, a videographer and graphics artist from Franklin, has developed a new program of silent films in cooperation with the Franklin Senior Center.

Also, a newly rebuilt, Franklin-made Trowbridge Piano will be at center stage as we explore music with a historic touch.

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, Franklin. The museum is open Saturday mornings from 10AM-1PM and Sunday afternoons from 1:00PM-4:00PM.

When visiting the museum, please consider donating a non-perishable item for the Franklin Food Pantry.    Questions? Contact Alan Earls at 508 560 3786.

"Franklin, today we’re asking for a favor:
As many of you know, Pour Richard’s and I are both transitioning to our next chapters. So…
If you’d like to welcome a Wine & Provisions Shop to Franklin.
If you would like to buy liquor at BJ’s.
If you believe that the denial of these licenses on June 26 was arbitrary and capricious, and counter to MA law.
Then contact the members below, and ask them to put this issue back on the Town Council agenda for August 14. And this time, vote in keeping with the law.

Working out all the detail with the family now. But we'll invite the whole community and her family is so happy. Flowers and hopefully a proclamation from the Council and a Q&A for the young athletes to ask her about her experience.

Should be a fun night. Please spread the word.

Franklin TV: Town Hall Overhaul

New Trimmings and New Tech

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 08/04/2023

It’s been twenty years-ish since Franklin government moved into the Municipal Building, and time for a refresh. For us it meant uninstalling and removing our 19 microphones, 7 cameras, and 5 displays – everything – from Chambers. Then the main dais and desks could be removed for painting and carpeting.

Franklin TV: Town Hall Overhaul
Franklin TV: Town Hall Overhaul

It means that in the ordering of tasks we are ‘first out – last in’. No one can do their thing until we remove all of our wiring, and we can’t reinstall our gear until all the work is done. There’s an axiom about audio and video systems. It takes only a few hours to remove everything. Done. But it takes days to reinstall and test to ensure that everything works as before. That said, as of Friday evening, we’re ready.

Along the way we also installed new tech. Over the years our Chambers system has had many adds and upgrades. Zoom systems – new control systems, and so on were installed in limited ways to avoid disrupting scheduled meetings. The renovation enabled us to reroute and upgrade signal cables through floor, ceiling and walls and add flexibility to enable future changes.

Thanks to Kevin Harn and Mike D’Angelo for their excellent, timely project management. Now – it’s back to business as usual.

And – as always –
Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm.
And, thank you for watching.

"For-profit colleges fund lawmakers who led attack on top universities over campus protests"

As antisemitism hearings on college campuses ignited late last year, US representatives Elise Stefanik and Virginia Foxx seized the spotlight, relentlessly attacking Harvard, Columbia and other top universities, portraying them as unsafe and incompetent.

“We must DEFUND the rot in America’s higher education,” Stefanik insisted in December, while co-authoring a bill that would withdraw federal funding from universities that do not participate in plans to curb campus protests. Foxx made similar calls.

A little-considered group of Stefanik and Foxx political allies and donors quietly benefited: the “for-profit” college industry.

The industry, which includes schools such as Keiser University, has drawn intense congressional and administrative scrutiny for predatory practices that frequently leave students with worthless degrees while enriching shareholders in recent decades. The industry is composed of schools that either are for-profit and have shareholders, or are formerly for-profit schools that became non-profits to evade regulations, but which still maintain relationships with for-profit entities.

Utah’s Great Salt Lake rings climate alarm bells over release of 4.1m tons of carbon dioxide | Climate crisis | The Guardian

Via The Guardian

For years, scientists and environmental leaders have been raising alarm that the Great Salt Lake is headed toward a catastrophic decline.

Now, new research points to the lake’s desiccating shores also becoming an increasingly significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists have calculated that dried out portions of the lakebed released about 4.1m tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in 2020, based on samples collected over seven months that year.

Their study, published last month in the journal One Earth, suggests that the Great Salt Lake – which is the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere – and other shrinking saline lakes across the world could become major contributors of climate-warming emissions. The research also adds to a dire list of environmental consequences brought on by the lake’s precipitous decline.

Last year, environmental and community groups sued Utah officials over failures to save the famous lake from irreversible collapse. In recent decades, as more and more water has been diverted away from the lake to irrigate farmland, feed industry and water lawns, a report last year estimated that the lake had lost 73% of its water and 60% of its surface area. Its decline was accelerated by global heating and a mega-drought in the US south-west.

Franklin Commemorates Overdose Awareness Day with Community Vigil - August 31, 2024

International Overdose Awareness Day will be marked this year in Franklin with a community vigil from 6 PM to 7 PM on August 31 at Franklin Town Common. This annual event is intended to end overdose, remember those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of those left behind.

The vigil is hosted by SAFE Coalition, a local nonprofit committed to inclusive and judgement-free support for substance use prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery, and family support. SAFE and volunteers will also place memorial flags in Franklin, Norfolk, Plainville, and Wrentham.

Jennifer Knight-Levine, CEO and co-founder of SAFE, says commemoration like IOAD is not just for those whose lives have been touched by overdose, but the entire community. “Losing a loved one to addiction can be isolating and deeply painful,” says Knight-Levine. “Coming together and building community with those who have felt a similar loss leaves everyone with a greater sense of connection and purpose.”

Franklin Commemorates Overdose Awareness Day with Community Vigil - August 31, 2024

The threat of overdose is both serious and urgent. Massachusetts experienced 2,125 fatal overdoses in 2023, making the state 15th in the nation for overdose deaths, according to the state’s Department of Health. The Center for Disease Control reports over 107,000 people died nationwide from overdose in 2023.
According to Knight-Levine, the need for awareness-raising events like IOAD is more important than ever.

“The opioid epidemic has dramatically changed how we think about prescribing practices, family medication history, and the power and role of pharmaceutical companies,” says Knight-Levine. “But it has most directly broken families and torn apart communities. This vigil is really a community formed to honor and remember those who have passed from an overdose.”

This year, thousands of communities worldwide will participate in IOAD, which was established in 2001. The theme of IOAD 2024 is “Together We Can,” highlighting the power of our community when we all stand together.

Those wishing to volunteer with SAFE to place flags or help with the vigils can email info@safecoalitionma.org People can also participate by using the hashtags #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose.

With support groups, educational courses, events, training, support services and more, SAFE provides a whole-person, whole-family, whole-community approach to addiction, prevention, and recovery.
