The FHS volleyball (video) & boys cross country teams post wins on Tuesday

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, October 14, 2025

Volleyball = Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 3
Franklin TV is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHC0mBeud9k

– Canton went on the road and earned a sweep over North Attleboro (25-20, 25-18, 25-21), powered by strong all-around performances from Erin Bigham and Soley Rodriguez Martinez. Bigham filled the stat sheet with 24 assists, six digs, five kills, three aces, and a block, while Rodriguez Martinez anchored the back row with 10 digs and added six aces and two kills. Brooke Connor led the Bulldogs’ attack with 10 kills and two aces. For North Attleboro, Deanna Miconi finished with 13 assists, Ava Kraskouskas posted 12 digs and two aces, Isabella Houghton recorded seven kills and six blocks, and Natalie Benedetti added six kills and seven digs.

Field Hockey = Canton, 0 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
"Sometimes when the top teams meet up, it becomes defensive. The teams cancel each other out and it just becomes a stalemate where neither side can muster anything towards goal.

But, sometimes, you get games like Tuesday afternoon’s rematch at Beaver Pond Field between the Hockomock League’s top two teams.

Franklin and Canton finished 0-0 for the second time in 15 days, but this was anything but boring. The teams combined for 17 corners and there were chances galore at both ends of the field. While the hosts dominated the first half, the visitors took control midway through the third quarter and held the momentum beyond the final buzzer.

The only thing standing between the top two offenses in the league (148 goals in 28 games combined coming into Tuesday) and a high-scoring shootout was each team’s senior goalie. Franklin’s Devon Barry (eight saves) and Canton’s Shaelyn Murphy (15 saves) pulled off a series of terrific saves and kept the game tight to the end."

Boys Cross Country = Franklin, 20 @ King Philip, 37

– Franklin took four of the top five spots to earn a strong team win over King Philip at the Rice Complex. Senior captain Adam Peng led the way as the top overall finisher, clocking a 16:43 on the 5K course. He was followed closely by junior Kyle Twomey, who placed second in 16:47. Sawyer Laing finished fourth in 17:09, Nicholas Mitchell took fifth in 17:20, and Tyler Anderson rounded out Franklin’s scoring group with an eighth-place finish in 17:39.

Franklin Federated Looks to the Future

By Rev. Doreen Oughton

As the pastor of Franklin Federated Church, I’ve been asked a couple of important questions lately:
1. Are we selling the building?
2. Are we closing?
The short answers are:
1. Hopefully!
2. Absolutely not.
Our congregation understands that church is about the people, not the steeple. We continue to have vibrant ministries focused on worship, mission, justice, service, and community-building. What we’ve been discerning is the future of our building—not our faith community.

Our current building was designed to host hundreds of worshippers, multiple Sunday school classes, and large gatherings like church suppers. Today, we have far fewer worshippers, no Sunday school, and no in-house suppers. Meanwhile, the building demands a growing share of our financial and physical resources—more than feels faithful to our mission.
Franklin Federated Looks to the Future
Franklin Federated Looks to the Future

As part of our discernment, we’ve asked: How might this beautiful, historic space be reimagined to better serve our community and values?

Knowing that the town’s master plan includes a cultural arts center, we wondered: could our building become that center? The idea aligns deeply with our values of community care, creativity, and shared space—far more than, say, converting it to residential housing.

We reached out to the former town planner, and conversations began. Since then, the town has commissioned a feasibility study to explore whether a cultural arts center here could be self-sustaining—meaning it wouldn’t require taxpayer support. Encouragingly, the study says yes—and offers a vibrant vision of how the space could host art exhibits, performances, culinary events, and more.

The conversation is ongoing and will likely continue when the new Town Council begins its term in January. If the town decides to move forward, we’ll explore options—perhaps continuing to worship in the space on Sunday mornings, or perhaps finding a new home. Either way, we are not closing. We are evolving.

We believe this transition can free us to more fully follow the movement of the Spirit—to make God’s love and mercy even more evident in and through our community.

If you have questions, or would like to tour the building and imagine the possibilities, please reach out: franklin.federated@gmail.com.
