The newsletter was shortened for publication here. To view the full contents follow this link

FEBRUARY 26

To the Tri-County Community,

It's a busy time of year for the Guidance Department. Freshmen, sophomore, and junior students have selected classes for next year and Guidance is busy processing the requests. Our counselors are also out interviewing our applicants for next year's freshmen class at the local middle schools.

Some of our students have been busy preparing and competing in specialized competitions:

The First Robotics team is building this year's entry and will compete later on this month. Many students competed at SkillsUSA District competitions Thursday at Southeastern RVTHS in Easton.

The 2016 Culinary Arts Pro-start teams competed this past Monday and earned bronze medals.
The Culinary team consisted of: Rob Jackson, Justin Chapman, Hannah Ruff and Julia Ohlson.
The management team consisted of Colleen Kinney and Miranda Way.

Winter Sports are winding down with four teams competing at the state level:

Girls Varsity Basketball captured the league title for the second year in a row and finished their regular season at 18-2. They will find out today who they will be playing in the MIAA State Tournament.

Ice Hockey completed their regular season yesterday with a 7-1 victory, which qualified them for the MIAA State Tournament for the third-straight year. The team will find out Saturday who and where they will be playing.

The Wrestling team continues their outstanding season this weekend as four of our wrestlers will be competing at All-States at Reading High School. The team finished with 9 League All-Stars, a Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

The Varsity Cheerleading team captured the State Vocational crown with their outstanding performance this past Sunday at the State Vocational Championships held at Tri-County. The team will be competing at State Regionals on Sunday, March 6, at Marshfield High School.

Spring Sports Signups will be held on Thursday, March 10, and spring practices begin on Monday March 21.

Thanks again for your support,
Mr. Procaccini

There was a good deal of time also spent with highlights on the math program being implemented at Davis Thayer. Students, faculty and administration coordinated to make the presentation. The presentation document is embedded here:

The FHS broken water pipe situation can be summarized with information combined from the School Committee meeting on Tuesday and the Town Council meeting on Wednesday. FHS Building Committee Chair Tom Mercer provided the update to the Council on Wednesday.

As announced on Monday as the students were to return to FHS, there had been a 'little water' situation at the high school over the school vacation. Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski provided an update to the School Committee. There was a meeting on Tuesday with all the relevant folks from the building contractors. This apparently was a known situation, an item on the 'punch list' that has been unresolved since the building opened.

The section of the building near the principals office has not been able to be heated properly. The deep cold that Franklin experienced on Presidents Day resulted in some broken water pipes and a lot of water damage.

The restoration is underway. The principal's office is the major area affected and hence it really doesn't hinder any of the instructional processes in the building. The clean up was handled, the painting and new walls are underway. When the office will be ready for use is not known.

The fix both short term and longer term is not a cost for the taxpayers as this was the result of the open 'punch list' item.

"It was heart breaking to see (this occur) at the new building."

On my walk around Franklin on Saturday, Feb 26, I was able to capture this photo through the window of the principal's office.

Tri-County Students Place Third In Massachusetts Prostart Invitational

Six juniors from Tri-County Regional’s Culinary Arts program brought home bronze medals from the 2016 Massachusetts ProStart Invitational held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester on Tuesday, February 23.

The students claimed third place honors in both the Culinary Arts and Management competitions. Eight teams from across the state participated in the annual competition.

Tri-County’s Culinary Arts team included Hannah Ruff, of Norfolk, Justin Chapman, and Rob Jackson, both of North Attleborough, and Julia Ohlson, of Plainville. Miranda Way, of Medway, and Colleen Kinney, of North Attleborough, competed on the Management side.

During the competition, the Management team developed a proposal to launch a new restaurant, including a marketing plan and menu. The Culinary team then had 60 minutes to cook an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Participating students were required to provide recipes, food cost, and menu pricing.

The students prepared a menu entitled "American Delights,” comprised of plates from different regions in the United States. Their appetizer, "From the Seas of New England," featured a fresh pan-seared North Atlantic Sea Scallop nestled on a bed of Sautéed Spinach with Mussels in a rich Saffron Sauce. The entrée was "From the Wild West," and included Lamb Chops grilled with Rosemary and Garlic and served alongside Mashed Potatoes and Root Vegetables. The dessert, "From the Golden State," was a Chocolate Mousse served in a Twill Cup.

The Massachusetts ProStart Invitational is hosted by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association Education Foundation. Winners at the state level advance to the National ProStart Invitational. This is the fifth year Tri-County has participated in the competition.

ProStart is a two-year high school Culinary Arts program, with curriculum developed by industry and academic experts. Tri-County's Culinary Arts program follows the ProStart curriculum.

In the News: Science topic of discussion, FSPA summer programs

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin
Educators, town officials and local business owners met with the head of the Massachusetts Life Science Center Friday to discuss the state of the sciences in town and how it could be improved.
Travis McCready, the center's CEO, visited Franklin, taking part in round-table discussions and touring the Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School, Franklin High School and the Zeptometrix Corp. His visit was hosted by state Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, and state senators Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, and Karen Spilka, D-Ashland.
The center, Roy pointed out, is a 10-year, $1 billion state effort to ensure Massachusetts' primacy in life science education and business development.
"Franklin has positioned itself well," Roy said of the town's friendliness to the bioscience industry. "Recently, our BioReady level was upgraded from 'gold' to 'platinum,' and it's a great place to live, work and raise a family."

The Cabaret week (July 25-29) focuses on repertoire choices, song interpretation and presentation, and concludes with a cabaret style revue at The Black Box, 15 W. Central St.
A behind-the-scenes exploration of theater design and production, also running July 25-29, includes staging, lighting, costuming, sets and sound. A two-week musical theater program (Aug. 8-19) presents the Tony Award-winning classic “Bye Bye Birdie.” Younger students, in grades 3-8, will present “Bye Bye Bieber”, an original FSPA musical comedy parody by Nick Paone, inspired by “Bye Bye Birdie” and featuring pop music hits.

The Turf Grass Forum asks "Is the Beaver Street field safe to use?"

PROBLEM:

  • The Beaver Street field is still slated for use in the spring of 2016
  • Precautions the Town of Franklin should take: GMAX testing and LEAD testing

photo of Beaver St field conditions
photo of Beaver St field conditions

QUESTIONS:

  • Who was the synthetic turf/carpet and in-fill material supplier for the Town of Franklin's Beaver Street Field?
  • Is the town liable or the manufacturer for maintenance which effects safety or warranty of the current field?

WHY GMAX and what is it?

You can read all the scientific details but simply put:
It is a test to measure the Surface hardness and applies to natural grass and synthetic turf.
GMAX is important because of the increased potential of concussions and other injuries cause by impact on a hard surface.
