Franklin High School had a busy weekend competing in something other than basketball and hockey. 

• The Drama Club got an award for their production of "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue"
• Mock Trail Team won twice to make it to the Elite 8
• Varsity Cheer took second place in the regionals and moves on the State meet
• FHS Girls Track and Field set a school record in the 4x800 to take 3rd in New England. Halle Atkinson also took a 4th place in the 300M run

FHS boys basketball tops St Peter Marian to advance to D1 Central Final

"There are a lot of teams in the state that preach the mantra of “next man up.” And then there are the teams that actually follow through. 

The Franklin Panthers are one of them. 

With junior captain Paul Mahon sidelined with an injury, senior Connor Goldstein stepped into the starting lineup and delivered, dropping a career-high 23 points to pace the Panthers to a 54-44 win over #6 St. Peter Marian in the D1 Central Semifinals. 

Top-seeded Franklin will take on #2 St. John’s Shrewsbury on Friday, at Worcester State at 5:45."

"Franklin just could not find the final touch"

"There will be a new Division 1 state champion this winter, as Franklin hockey saw its title defense come to a close on Sunday afternoon at Gallo Ice Arena with a 3-0 quarterfinal loss to Framingham. 

All season long, the Panthers (14-9-1) have played with a target on their backs following last year’s historic run to the state title. Franklin battled through that adversity to win 14 games and claim another Kelley-Rex division crown, Saturday’s defeat means there will be no repeat for the program, which has made quite a bit of noise in its short time in Div. 1. 

“At the beginning of the season, we talked about we need to come with our best every night or we’re not going to win hockey games because we’re going to get everyone’s best,” said Franklin coach Chris Spillane, who finishes the season 10 wins shy of 300 for his career. 

He continued, “We’ve had a bullseye on our back for sure. We’ve handled it really well at times and at other times we didn’t handle it so well.”

Town Council recap - capital money spent, DelCarte playground to be replaced (again)

Much of the Town Council business actions on Wednesday were of the 'standard' type. Approval for a new appointment to the Cultural Council. Liquor license transfer from Annie's Market to BJ's (marking the end of an era for Franklin). Acceptance of the reorganization at Alumni Restaurant as the mother passes the license to her daughter.

The money side of the business saw the Council approve of capital expenses. 

$115,000 toward the purchase of a new fire truck. This is part of the 5 year rotation of vehicles. Some money is set aside each year. This was added to the $485,000 saved already for the expected $600,000 total.

A total of $1,681,000 was authorized for a variety of capital needs across the Town and School departments. The full listing of items can be found here

$665,000 was approved to be spent on capital from the Water Enterprise account. The enterprise account set of water receives the fee from our water use and pays for its services from the fees to be self sustaining. The fee will occasionally be set for an increase to cover expenses.

$610,000 was approved to be spent from the Sewer Enterprise account. Also an enterprise account, the sewer fees are set aside to cover the sewer related expenses.

In the Town Administrator summary of the meeting it was announced that the playground at DelCarte had seen additional problems over the winter event though it was covered. Franklin has worked with the manufacturer to get a full replacement of the unit. This time they will use a more standard material set (steel and plastic) rather than the concrete mix which, although it is reported to be working well in other installations, has not been successful here. The removal and replacement of the playground unit will likely keep the playground from being used for several weeks. It is anticipated to be available for June 1. There is no cost to Franklin for this work.

Superintendent Search - Meet the Candidates - March 20

The Franklin School Committee has reopened the search for the superintendent of schools to replace the outgoing superintendent, Dr. Maureen Sabolinski, who is retiring after serving eight years in that position.

Please join us on Monday evening, March 20 at 6:30 in the town council chambers (second floor of the Franklin Municipal Building, 355 East Central Street) to meet the finalists. 

The finalists have not yet been named, but once they are announced their resumes will be posted on the Franklin School Committee website. Citizens who attend the forum will be invited to complete a survey providing input on each candidate.

Water Conservation Rebates Now Available

How to get your Rebate!

1. Toilets: Check the EPA WaterSense Water Efficient Product List for qualifying toilet.  Choose "Tank-Type Toilets" under Product Category and hit Search to see all qualifying toilets or select your specific Brand Name and Model Name and hit Search.

  Washers: Check the List of Energy Star Certified Washers for qualifying washers.  Select any washer with an Integrated Water Factor (IWF) of 3.7 or less.

  Rain Barrels: Rain barrel must have a minimum capacity of 50 gallons, and can be found at your local hardware store.

2. Purchase and install a qualifying toilet, clothes washer or rain barrel on or after June 1, 2016.
3. Fill in the Rebate Application (attachments at bottom of this page) and submit to DPW within 90 days of purchase.  Applicant must be the owner of the property and a Water Department account holder in good standing.
4. If approved, a check and voucher to dispose of the old washer and/or toilet(s) at the Franklin Recycling Center will be sent right to your home!

The position calls for two hands on the ground, with one's rear end up in the air almost like a push-up. 

"Summer's mastered the downward dog," her mother Leah Robertson, of Franklin, said Saturday morning. "I don't think she knows she has (though)." 

The mother-daughter pair still got to test and flex their muscles at the Franklin Public Library on Kenwood Circle as the children's department hosted its first-ever "Family Yoga Adventure" session."

Franklin turns 239 - come and celebrate at the Birthday Party - March 5

The Franklin Historical Museum will celebrate our Town’s 239th Birthday on Sunday March 5th in the museum library at 1:00PM. All are invited to visit the museum and share in the celebration.

Franklin’s rich history began with the establishment of the official town charter on March 2, 1778. The original founding fathers, with such names as Pond, Failes, Fisher, Metcalf, Hawes, Whiting, Partridge, Clark and Darling, to name a few, originally intended to name our town Exeter. Upon hearing of the exciting news that was just hitting the shores of our young country, these men scratched out the name Exeter and instead applied to establish the town of Franklin. This gesture was to honor Diplomat Benjamin Franklin who had just successfully negotiated a treaty with France as an ally against Great Britain during the Revolutionary War.

So we celebrate the name, the man and our town each year, reminding ourselves of our place in history. To help celebrate, we invite all residents who share their March 2nd birthday with the town to join us. You will be recognized for your shared birthday and your own place in history. All residents are invited to join us for cake and coffee on Sunday the 5th at 1:00PM.

Hockomock Area YMCA Invites Families to Join Sports Leagues, starting April 7

On weekends starting April 7, at the YMCA in Foxboro, Franklin and North Attleboro, youth athletes are invited to get outside and join a team in the eight-week Spring Sports League program. T-ball and baseball, soccer, flag football, cheerleading – check out the sports offerings at your Y and get in the game, improve your skills, make new friends, be active with other kids and learn to love a sport at the Y.

Open Auditions - Arthur Miller’s "The Crucible" - Monday, March 13

Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) will hold open auditions for Arthur Miller’s landmark play, The Crucible, on Monday, March 13 at THE BLACK BOX, the company’s home and performance venue located at 15 West Central Street in downtown Franklin. FPAC will present The Crucible on April 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. and April 30 at 2 p.m. at THE BLACK BOX. Winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play, Arthur Miller’s drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable of our contemporary society. Set in 1962, the story focuses upon a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife’s arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie, and it is there that the monstrous course of bigotry and deceit is terrifyingly depicted. The farmer, instead of saving his wife, finds himself also accused of witchcraft and ultimately condemned with a host of others. While set against the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials, Miller’s masterful drama is an allegory of the McCarthy-era witch-hunts of the 1950s. The Crucible is a timeless work with a universal message about the power of false accusations, mass hysteria, fear, and intolerance.
