Franklin Newcomers and Friends: “Green Thumb” - Mar 14 |
"The Franklin Downtown Partnership has set the dates for its 2018 events and meetings, and a few of those events have new dates and times thanks to input from members and Franklin residents.
The annual Strawberry Stroll, which traditionally had been held on Thursday afternoons, will be Friday, June 8, from 5 to 8 p.m.
“Residents told us that holding the Strawberry Stroll on a Friday evening would make it easier for them to come downtown and enjoy the event,” says Executive Director Lisa Piana. “The feedback told us more families could spend time together downtown without the Stroll competing with after-school activities and sports. We think it will be a very positive change for families and for our downtown businesses and restaurants.”
Thanks to a member’s suggestion, the Partnership’s networking events are now monthly breakfast meetings (instead of lunch) held in the Dean College dining center. The first breakfast meeting in January drew 15 members who shared ideas and enjoyed a meal for less than $6."

"The importance of a random act of kindness is not lost to the youth of Franklin.
Nine-hundred felt, paper, and foam hearts were strung up last week with clotheslines and pins, dangling from tree to tree at the Franklin Town Common to commemorate both Valentine’s Day and simple, everyday niceties.
Two hearts are weaved or glued together to create a pocket in the middle. Each heart-pocket contains a note describing a random act of kindness performed by a Franklin student.
Messages about helping friends build snowmen and aiding with school work are stuffed into the small pockets that are laced around the park and gazebo."
"Coming off a state finals appearance a year ago, Franklin loaded its schedule with tough opponents in hopes of preparing for another deep playoff run.
After beating D1 South hopeful New Bedford on Sunday, the Panthers matched up with the state’s top-ranked team, Tech Boston, in the championship game of the Harvey Nasuti Winter Classic.
Although the flow of the game was hindered by nearly 50 foul calls, the Panthers made the runs at the right times and limited the Bears in transition, resulting in a 76-67 win.
“We feel like we’re one of the best teams in the state,” said Franklin coach CJ Neely. “We’re not worried about who’s one or two or stuff like that. We talk about our goals and taking it one step at a time. This was our next goal [to win this tournament] and Tech Boston happened to the be the top-ranked team. They’re a very good team. We like that we can compete there and show what we’re made of, especially on the defensive side of the ball I think we did a great job able to slow them down some.”Continue reading the article online

"Franklin senior Ashley Loomis has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 11 through Feb. 17. Loomis is the 20th player selected for the 2017-18 school year and 10th player chosen during the winter season.
Loomis capped her incredible career in the pool with two state titles and two state records at this past weekend’s swimming championships at Boston University. After making it four sectional titles in four years in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle the week before (and winning both races in convincing fashion at the Hockomock Championships), Loomis added to her resume with a third straight state title in the 200-free and fourth straight in the 500-free, both in record-breaking fashion.
“Having Ashley as a part of Franklin swimming has been an amazing journey; truly a significantly valuable learning experience for athletes and coaches alike,” said Franklin coach Jess Pridham. “I have watched her grow and mature as both an athlete and as a person. She has always maintained a high level of humility, dignity, and grace through all of her success as well as encouraging and supporting her teammates in their endeavors as well."
