Franklin Cultural Council ready to award $23K in grants this year

"We are all needing a little good news these days. The FCC is happy to announce we will be awarding $23,000 to arts and cultural programing in Franklin, MA in 2022! We can't wait to share all the fantastic programming you'll be able to participate in this year. (Award letters will go out the week of 1/24, FYI).
That big dollar sign is a combination of funds given to us by the Massachusetts Cultural Council as well our our town allotted money. You can thank our town councilors and town administrator for continually supporting arts and culture within our community. The arts continue to strengthen our community, open our eyes and hearts to new experiences and raise our children with a wider scope of the world. We are GRATEFUL for the opportunity to bring these programs to Franklin."

MA News: the digital divide; help for MA arts organizations

"Tracking the digital divide - We can't close it without first documenting it "
"OVER THE PAST YEAR, schools, workplaces, health care providers, and other basic services have moved online. In doing so, the centrality of the internet to modern life became crystal clear to everyone in the country. But for people and families without broadband access, the pandemic has only exposed and exacerbated the digital divide—putting resources like telework, virtual learning, and telehealth out of reach for millions of people.
Even before the pandemic, many people lacked access to high-speed broadband across Massachusetts. According to the ACLU of Massachusetts Data for Justice project, Census estimates show that more than 1 million Massachusetts residents—about 15 percent of the state’s population—do not have a fixed broadband internet connection. Our Census analysis also shows that internet and computer access correlate with income, such that lower income communities are disproportionately left unconnected."

"Long-awaited arts funding finally arriving"
"MASSACHUSETTS ARTS appear to be big beneficiaries of $16 billion in federal relief aid that is finally starting to be released after a delayed start and an arduous review process.

According to federal data on the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, 123 Massachusetts arts organizations have received more than $100 million so far, the seventh-highest amount of any state in the country."

"the arts are an incredible motivator to increase engagement"

"A NEW STUDY says an effort to increase arts programming in the Boston Public Schools has helped boost student attendance and promote student and parent engagement with schools, outcomes that arts supporters say provide added rationale for maintaining or enhancing the role of arts in the schools.

For students receiving arts programming, the study found that school attendance increased by roughly one-third of a day over the course of the school year compared with students not in art courses. The gains were greater for students with individualized education plans (IEPs) and those who had previously been chronically absent, defined as missing 10 percent or more of school days. For students with IEPs, arts programming was linked with increased attendance of 0.7 days, while for those with a history of chronic absenteeism the gain was about 1.1 days per year.

The study, which was released Monday morning, also found that teachers observed greater student and parent engagement at schools with arts programming."
