End of School Year status update provided on School Improvement Plans

Catching up to share the summary for the School Committee (SC) held on Tuesday, August 8.

The School Committee heard updates from all the schools and the Central Office on the progress made on the Improvement Plans during the 2016-2017 school year. The updates were provided by the school principals. The presentation docs are shown below. You can follow the links to my notes recorded during the meeting for other details of the conversation. The full video of the meeting is available for replay by Franklin TV and that link is also found below.

After the schools provided their update, the Central Office, Superintendent Sara Ahern and Assistant Superintendents Peter Light and Joyce Edwards provided a preview of the District Improvement Plan for the coming school year. An offsite planning session was planned for Aug 16-18 during which the plan would be discussed, reviewed and refined to bring back to the SC for the Aug 22 meeting.

Note: the presentation docs include the status updates also provided at midyear. If you have seen those, you can skip to the end of year details listed for each school.

“I think Franklin’s really ahead of the curve”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The town’s schools will be partnering with William James College to further their “social-emotional” learning efforts.
Assistant Superintendent Peter Light said the partnership - which will offer graduate-level instruction to the Oak Street Elementary School’s faculty and administration through a pilot program - will take place over the course of the 2017-2018 school year.
In recent years, the local district has adopted social-emotional learning practices, which take a “whole-child” approach to education.
“What we see more and more is that we have to have high-quality, standards-based instruction, but equally important is the kids’ readiness to receive that instruction,” Light said.'

State Representative Jeffrey Roy Hosts Tri-County Early Education Advocates at the State House

Tri-County RVTHS Freshman and Junior Early Education students were welcomed by State Representative Jeffrey Roy of Franklin and Medway to visit the State House and take them on a personal tour. Representative Roy listened and responded to the students' questions regarding how best to provide quality early learning experiences for young children.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the Early Education advocates from Tri-County," said State Representative Jeffrey Roy. "It is important that all students have access to the benefit of a world-class education, and that access must start at early ages. It was great to see these students take a vested interest in Early Education and the overall the betterment of their community."

Junior students learned about proposed legislation to improve Early Education in Massachusetts and identified additional areas which they believe are essential to provide quality early learning experiences for all children. Some of the topics the students broached with Representative Roy included the need for additional recess time for children, the expectations of young children as set forth in the Common Core State Standards, making quality early learning programs accessible to all children and attracting and retaining quality teachers in the field of Early Education.

Representative Roy encouraged students to continue to advocate for children by contacting their local and state representatives in their respective towns, and raising awareness among their friends and families by sharing their knowledge and understanding of the importance of quality early learning experiences for young children.

"I would like to thank Representative Roy for his continued support of our programs," said Superintendent Stephen Dockray. "This field trip, which Tri-County students have taken for the past four years, is a valuable opportunity for students to advocate for the children of Massachusetts."

Tri-County RVTHS, located at 147 Pond Street in Franklin, is a recipient of the High Schools That Work Gold Achievement Award and serves the communities of Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleborough, Plainville, Seekonk, Sherborn, Walpole, and Wrentham.

In the News: elementary school improvement plans, silhouette artist scheduled for Oct 10

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"The town's elementary schools put forward their school improvement plans this week.
The principals, speaking before the School Committee Tuesday night, noted that while the plans largely hewed to the overall district plan, each was tailored to apply to the individual school.
They told the committee that there were numerous common themes between the plans, including a focus on social-emotional learning; the development of a school culture; the use of best practices for homework and instructional strategies; and an emphasis on two-way communication with the community. Each school, though, pursues those elements in different ways."
