The local businesses have their circle of friends so to speak with the Franklin Downtown Partnership, or the United Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The local cultural organizations also have a circle of friends through the Cultural District. 

How about the non-profit organizations? 

Therefore, on March 29, 2021, we'll gather together the non-profit organizations serving Franklin, MA to 

1. create awareness of the work and services being provided by each org 
2. to improve the referral capability for each org 
3. to share best practices among the orgs

The group will be called the Franklin Area Non-profit Network, or FANN, and hence it will be a fanntastic group!

Community Forum to Address Preparedness For Climate Impacts And Hazard Mitigation Plan

On March 2, 2020 the Town of Franklin will host a Community Forum to discuss the impacts of climate change on Franklin and actions the town can take to prepare for those impacts. The community forum will be held at 6:00 PM at the Franklin Municipal Building. All Franklin residents, businesses, and civic organizations are invited and encouraged to participate.

The Community Forum will present the results of a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Workshop that was held on November 20, 2019 jointly by the Towns of Franklin and Bellingham. The MVP Workshop brought together Town Board and Committee members, municipal staff, local businesses, institutions, and civic organizations to identify how Franklin and Bellingham may be vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, as well as the towns’ strengths and actions they may take to increase their resilience.

The forum will also summarize the 2020 Update of the Town of Franklin’s Hazard Mitigation Plan which is currently being prepared by Franklin with the assistance of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC).

Franklin residents, business owners, civic organizations and institutions are invited to attend the forum and provide their input as part of this on-going effort to plan for the Town’s future.

2019 Franklin/Medway Jail Diversion Annual Report

"It has been just over a year since the introduction of the Franklin/Medway Jail Diversion Program. Our clinician, Kallie Montagano has been instrumental in making this an extremely successful program. Our officers have come to find more uses for the JDP program than were initially expected, and all of this has lead to better care for our residents who may be suffering from an acute crisis, or long term issues. The program aims to help the police solve problems for the longer term, and not just take an action that leads to an incident ending for the moment, only to resurface again shortly.

The Jail Diversion Program aims to help people in mental health crisis get the assistance they need, and not direct them unnecessarily into the Criminal Justice System. The Clinician rides with police officers in cruisers and responds directly to calls. They will help evaluate and make recommendations for further care and follow up. This shortens the time on scene for officers, and ultimately leads to a better outcome for those involved.

The JDP clinician can assist individuals and families who are seeking resources to help themselves or a loved one get care.

The Jail Diversion Program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health at no costs to the Town of Franklin or Medway. The program is administered by Advocates Inc.

Franklin Art Association’s Showcase through Nov 10

The Franklin Art Association’s Showcase of original fine art by FAA members is currently on display at The Morini Gallery, 377 N. Main Street, Mansfield, Massachusetts, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday until November 10, 2019.

The show, which is free and open to the public, features over thirty pieces of original art in a juried show. Award-winning artwork includes: 

• First Place for Lisa G. Bailey’s watercolor, “Pedaling Memories;” 
• Second Place for Margaret Munson’s photograph, “Chihuly Glass Below Seattle Space Needle;”

Franklin Line notice Weekday Shuttle Service for off peak trips

Weekdays, September 16 - October 3, from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM, shuttle buses will replace Franklin Line service between Forge Park/495 and Franklin due to track maintenance.

This necessary tie job replacement project will improve service and reliability on the Commuter Rail. Additional weekdays may be added as work progresses on the Franklin Line.

Please note the pickup/drop off locations for shuttle buses:

• Franklin: Please board in the main station parking lot near the shelter.
• Forge Park/495: Please board at the end of the driveway to the parking lot.

"Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett and Brig. Gen. Paula Lodi are believed to be the first pair of sisters to become generals, the military branch’s highest category of rank. The sisters grew up in Franklin - the daughters of Clara and Ruston Lodi. 

One sister had wanted to be a soldier since she was young; the other planned to have a career in the Foreign Service. Both marked a milestone for the U.S. Army this summer: Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett and Brig. Gen. Paula Lodi are believed to be the first pair of sisters to become generals, the military branch’s highest category of rank. 

“The fact that both of us would have come from the same family, it almost makes you want to go out and get a lottery ticket,” Barrett told The Washington Post. “Except, this is not a game of chance. It is hard work, it is strong leadership skills, it’s strong technical competency. Then you realize that this is a very tough bar in and of itself for both of us to make it.”

"Carlo Lodi is in the awe of his younger sisters Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett and Brig. Gen. Paula Lodi. 

Being nearly 10 years older than both of them, he can still recall the times they spent on their bikes flinging newspapers on to people’s porches accomplishing their paper routes. 

Now, the two sisters are the first in the history of the United States Army to both earn the rank of general - the military branch’s highest rank. 

“They will always be my younger sisters,” Lodi said. “But when I go down and watch promotion ceremonies - whether it be for Paula or for Maria - and hear what people have to say about them, it’s unbelievable.”

This report describes Franklin’s drinking water sources and treated water quality for the calendar year 2018, and programs that protect the high quality of our water supply. This publication is mandated by the federal public right-to-know regulation requiring community water suppliers to provide specific treated water quality information annually to their customers. This report includes additional information beyond the minimum federal requirements in order to respond to typical questions our customers ask about Franklin’s water system.

Important Information About Drinking Water

All sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) including rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells, contain some naturally occurring contaminants or substances. Because water is the universal solvent, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animal and human activity.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Removing all contaminants would be extremely expensive and in nearly all cases would not provide greater protection of health.  To ensure that your water is safe to drink, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the EPA regulates the allowable amount of certain contaminants in the water provided by public water systems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water that must provide the same protection for public health. This report provides you with information about the contaminants found naturally in your drinking water, the levels at which they are found, and the likely source of each contaminant.

Happy birthday - Franklin!

On March 2, 1778 Franklin came into being. It was incorporated as a town and remained a small town for many, many years. Then in the 1980's and 1990's the population growth hit great numbers. Entire farms disappeared into residential developments and the population has now settled around 30,000. Franklin operates as a city form of government but we still call ourselves "The Town of Franklin."

"On Wednesday evening, November 14th, a group of 85 students and parents gathered to enjoy a meal together at Medway High School, after which The Well-Balanced Student, a Stanford University Challenge-Success film, was screened. The event, aimed at student mental health among the middle school crowd, was the first of a two-part collaboration of Medway Schools’ Director of Wellness, Ryan Sherman, and Franklin Schools’ Director of Health and Education, Kristin Letendre. The second film event, geared toward educating high school families, will take place at Franklin High School on January 8th. 

“Communities in general, especially here in the Metrowest region, are seeing great increases in student mental health concerns and overall stress,” says Sherman. Schools, he says, address the issue in many different ways, including educating about it in health class and incorporating social emotional learning, which teaches students techniques to cope with mental health concerns and self-management from Kindergarten through 12th grade. "

"Medway, says Sherman, has invested a lot in streamlining the process for students who need mental health counseling. Now, he says, in addition to responding to students who present with mental health concerns, “We’re looking for a next layer, of prevention, working with families and looking at what they can do to support what we do in school – how they can create a balanced life for students. How do we focus on prevention, lifestyle that hopefully will prevent students from exhaustion, high levels of stress or mental health concerns?
That was the impetus what got Franklin and Medway thinking about this.”

The January 8th event at Franklin High School, 218 Oak Street in Franklin, will include a dinner, from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by the film for families of students in grades 9-12 at 6-7:30 p.m. 

Daycare for younger siblings will be provided by members of Franklin High’s SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). 

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held the following evening.

"Another step has been taken in the plans to open a trail system on the Charles River Meadowlands property when representatives from BETA Group Inc. came last week to survey the land. 

Alan Earls, director of the Charles River Meadowlands Initiative, said the survey work marks the beginning of an effort to flesh out what is possible with a $25,000 grant awarded by the state last year. 

“We’re looking for an assessment by a professional, so we can figure out what is practical in this idea of linking these parcels across three towns,” Earls said of the work being done by BETA, a Norwood-based planning, engineering, design, asset management and construction services company. 

The approximately 900-acre parcel is spread over Franklin, Bellingham and Medway, though the group’s trip into the woods last week only covered a small portion. About 465 acres of the affected land is in Franklin, near the Pond Street area."

"A new face will soon be a prominent part of the Franklin and Medway police departments. 

The towns were recently awarded a joint grant with Framingham-based Advocates Inc. to hire a clinical social worker to assist with cases involving people in mental health crises. "It’s rare for a town to have so many open positions at once, said Assistant Town Administrator Jaime Hellen, and an opportune time to get involved in the community. 

With five paid openings available, it’s important to fill those gaps in to ensure the best quality of service possible, according to Hellen. The town is seeking residents, or even considering out-of-towners for open positions in the library, DPW, municipal office and fire station. 

The town is also always looking for part-time summer workers in the DPW and Facilities departments, he said, and the willingness of residents to lend a helping hand has always been a plus. 

Fire Chief Gary McCarraher said he’s looking at a few potential retirements before the end of this year and is starting to recruit as seen fit. Not sure how many people might retire, he said it’s important to prepare. For now, only one position is open in his department."
