2017 Official - Franklin Biennial Town Election Results
There is one correction that I could find to the election results shared for November 7. In the School Committee results, Precinct 6 for Cynthia Douglas changed from 286 to 251 and overall from 2235 to 2200. That change in 35 votes cascaded through the totals for School Committee but there was no other impact.

MBTA: Starting November 20: Commuter Rail schedule changes (not for Franklin Line)
Fall/Winter Commuter Rail schedules go into effect on Monday, November 20th. Schedules are now available on mbta.com.
Please note that Haverhill, Lowell, Framingham/Worcester, and Providence/Stoughton are the only lines with changes made to train times.
Additionally, all lines have been updated to incorporate severe weather service information and can be viewed on mbta.com on each line's schedule page.
Paper copies of the schedules will be available in the Boston-based stations (North Station, South Station, and Back Bay) on Monday, November 13th.
For those who utilize the MBTA Commuter Rail application, please make sure to update the schedule in your application prior to travel on November 20th. When opening the application, a prompt will appear stating that a new Commuter Rail schedule is available. Please check the update button to ensure that the new schedules have been updated in your application.

“Stuff like this drives us crazy"
"The street sign for Hennessey Drive was stolen for the fourth time on Monday night. A resident reported to police that the sign was missing from its post on Tuesday morning.
The reason the sign has been stolen so many times, according to DPW director of operations Deacon Perrotta, is easy to speculate.
“Someone wants to put it behind their bar or something,” he said. “Hennessey seems to be a very popular sign to steal.”
Though the signs are not too expensive for the town to replace, it is time consuming for the DPW, and could potentially pose a safety threat for residents that live there."

"Voters elected three new faces - Melanie Hamblin, Eamon McCarthy Earls and Patrick Casey - to the Town Council in Tuesday’s election.
A total of 3,913 residents took part in the town’s biennial election, in which the entirety of Franklin’s Town Council and School Committee were elected.
Casey, with 2,463 votes, garnered the highest vote tally of the 12 candidates seeking seats on the nine-member council. Fellow newcomers Hamblin and Earls received 2,127 and 2,316 votes, respectively."

FHS volleyball playoff run ends in Hopkinton
From Hockomock Sports we share the results of the Franklin High School fall sports results on Tuesday, Nov 7.
Volleyball = D1 Central West = #6 Franklin, 0 @ #3 Hopkinton, 3 – Final
– Franklin went on the road and gave the third-seeded Hillers a big test, especially in the second half, but came up short (13-25, 24-26, 18-25). Hailey Sanders had seven kills and a block while Meaghan Maguire added four kills and four blocks to pace the offense. Lauren McGrath finished with 24 assists, eight digs and three aces while Riley Marino had 16 digs for the Panthers.

Franklin Turkey Trot Helps Feed Local Families in Need - Nov 23
For the hundreds who will come out on Thanksgiving morning for the Franklin Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run, the motto is “Run now, gobble later!” When families gather together for their traditional feast after the event, there will be many more grateful for the bounty that results from the race. The registration fee of $20, or 20 nonperishable goods, goes directly to the Franklin Food Pantry, keeping donations local to help feed those in need.
The event begins and ends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) at 91 Jordan Road in Franklin. The race, open to runners and walkers of all ages, attracts experienced runners as well as families who want to get out and exercise together before their traditional holiday get-together. A professional race organizer officially records timing, pace and rankings for each runner.
“Thanksgiving is truly a time to be grateful for the many blessings we have,” said Erin Lynch, executive director for the Franklin Food Pantry. “But it is also an occasion to think of others who are struggling to put food on their tables. The Franklin Turkey Trot rallies our community to give back and help protect others from the threat of hunger. The more than 1,000 individuals we serve are grateful to our community for coming out to support us.”
The November 23 race will begin at 8 a.m. Registration can be done online at franklinturkeytrot.org; at the LDS Church from 7 – 9 p.m. the Wednesday before the race; or the morning of the race from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m. Official race t-shirts can be purchased online for $10 for those who register by November 2.
The registration fee of $20 is preferred as it allows the Pantry to “stretch our budget for leaner times,” said Lynch. “Our capacity to store the donated goods is extremely limited this time of year.” If participants prefer to donate goods, Lynch said the Pantry is in need of tea, coffee, hot cocoa and canned fruit. They can also go to the Pantry’s website at franklinfoodpantry.org for a longer list of current needs.
Lynch credits much of the event’s success to Race Director Krystal Whitmore. “We are fortunate to have an incredibly hard-working group of volunteers, led by Krystal, who make this event possible,” said Lynch. “Krystal organizes church members, high school students, and her own family members to volunteer. The amount of work involved is amazing. We could not do this without them.”

Only 3916 of the 22,701 registered voters turned out to make changes to the Town Council, Board of Health, and School Committee. 17.2%

The Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club will meet on Wednesday, November 8. We are pleased to host as our speaker, Brenda Reed, currently the Director for Lifelong Community Learning in Franklin. Reed is a former chief executive for the New England Press Association, a former public servant – both elected and appointed – a former founder and co-owner of a successful weekly newspaper, and a former Attleboro mayor and School Committee member.
In those positions Reed has been at the intersection of public policy and business management. She understands the crucial importance of good organization, setting priorities, feasible strategies, attention to detail, the need to collaborate successfully with staff team members, volunteers, and the public.
She will be speaking about the Lifelong Community Learning programs and the opportunities for partnership. Lifelong Community Learning is a program of the Franklin Public Schools Lifelong Learning Institute and is dedicated to providing quality learning experiences for residents in the Town of Franklin and surrounding communities.
We invite any resident of Franklin, or a surrounding town that doesn't have a Newcomers Club, to join us at "3" Restaurant, 461 West Central Street, Franklin. Complimentary appetizers and beverages are provided and a cash bar is available. We meet upstairs at 7:30 PM on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We run our meetings September through May. Additionally, we hold many fun and varied events to stay connected throughout the year.

Help with the Franklin St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving food baskets
Each year, the St. Vincent de Paul headquarters in Stoughton offers the Franklin St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving food baskets ($10 each) for distribution throughout the community. If you are in need of assistance for Thanksgiving, please call the St. Vincent de Paul office at (508) 918-2291.
The St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul Society will be conducting its 9th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive on the weekend of November 18 and 19, to enhance the baskets from HQ and to restock our food pantry shelves.
Suggested items to donate include applesauce, cranberry juice, popcorn, peanut butter, jelly, jams, cookies, crackers, bread mix, pudding, candy corn, cranberry sauce, stuffing, cereal, fruit cocktail, coffee/tea/cocoa, boxes of chocolate, canned yams and vegetables, rice, chowder, and a Thanksgiving tablecloth or decoration.
Donations may also be dropped off any time between now and November 19 and may be placed in the boxes at the doors of the church.
Please know that these donations will give many families in the community a memorable Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you for all your help and support!

Anna Eppihimer, Pantherbook student, writes the latest on the cafeteria crowding at the high school. For the record, the State wanted the school sized for 1500, the town fought for and the high school was built for 1600. With almost 200 more students than it should have, it is not surprising to have some space issues.

"This year, Franklin High School reached its highest enrollment in history. 1,792 students are currently enrolled, causing the lunchroom to overflow.
The cafeteria isn’t as big as the school would have liked, and the administration, faculty, central office, superintendent, and student leadership are working on solutions to this crowding problem.
Paul Peri, the principal at FHS, says he “recently ordered more lunchroom furniture.” He went on to say the new tables and chairs will be put into the main hall outside the lunchroom. Mr. Peri is also looking to get more high top tables for the main hall.
The new furniture will alleviate some of the cafeteria crowding, and will provide a quieter area for students during their lunches."Continue reading the article online

"For at least a decade, it has been a tradition this time of year. With Thanksgiving approaching, the fifth-graders at Davis Thayer Elementary School hoist bags and boxes full of donated food and household items and make a short jaunt - a parade of cheerful and excited good will - over to the Franklin Food Pantry.
On Monday morning, this year’s class took their turn at keeping the tradition going - a charitable campaign the students said they look forward to as they work toward their final elementary school year. The delivery of the goods is the culmination of a few weeks of collecting donations from the school community, with students in kindergarten up to fifth grade gradually amassing their contributions until it is time for the fifth grade walk to the pantry.
“I like how we get to walk over to the food pantry, and help people,” said Devin Curley, sitting at a table in the school cafeteria Monday morning, bag full of non-perishables dangling from his hands as he waited for the signal to line up and begin the procession."

“We’re all back!” exclaimed the woman pushing two carriages as she ferried five cherry-cheeked children down the corridor on the lower level of the Franklin Public Library on Monday morning.
The exuberant greeting brought an even wider grin to the face of Director Felicia Oti - a feat, considering how widely she was already smiling - as she navigated the small crowd moving from a program room following the “Move Along” story time.
“And we are so happy to see you!” she responded.
Inside the program room her joy expanded even further. “Listen to all of the happy noises!” she exclaimed. “Everyone is so glad to see us, and we are even happier to see them!”
