"The science is abundantly clear: More guns do not stop crime. Guns kill more children each year than auto accidents. More children die by gunfire in a year than on-duty police officers and active military members. Guns are a public health crisis, just like COVID, and in this, we are failing our children, over and over again.

In the U.S., we have existing infrastructure that we could easily emulate to make gun use safer: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Created by Congress in 1970, this federal agency is tasked, among other things, with helping us drive a car safely. It gathers data on automobile deaths. It’s the agency that monitors and studies seat belt usage. While we track firearm-related deaths, no such safety-driven agency exists for gun use."

Strawberry Stroll, Ladybug Trail, ARTWALK and Second Sunday Speaker Series all in one weekend at the Historical Museum!

The Franklin Historical Museum plans a busy June weekend beginning with a special Friday night opening June 10. In conjunction with the Franklin Downtown Partnership the museum will be open from 4 PM - 8 PM during the annual Strawberry Stroll celebration. The much anticipate Ladybug Cultural & Historical Trail will be dedicated that evening, on Main Street, as well.  

Stop by the museum to visit two points of interest on the trail, the Delegates Ladybug, which tells the story of the Ladybug becoming our ‘state insect’. And the Straw Hat Sculpture, sitting happily on the museum’s front lawn, which is a nod to the once thriving straw industry in our town. Learn a bit about the 2nd grade Kennedy School class that went to the State House and learned about the legislative process of making a new state law.

Saturday morning, June 11 the LiveARTS string quartet performs at 10:30 AM as part of the Franklin ArtWALK Celebration sponsored by the Franklin Cultural District. Events around town during this 3-day celebration include live performances, art exhibits, family activities, a kick off reception and more. The Franklin Historical Museum is proud to once again host one of the many live performances for this event. For more information on the ArtWALK schedule visit www.franklinculture.org. 

Rounding off this busy weekend is our Second Sunday Speaker Series with a presentation on the 150 year history of the Franklin Fire Department as they commemorate their founding in 1872. Fire photographs from the Stanley Chilson collection will be on display, and a presentation of interesting facts and figures recounting the early years from hand drawn pumper wagons, to horse drawn pumper wagons to today’s finest and fastest rescue apparatus. Do you know when our first fire station was built? Do you know which prominent Franklin citizen of his day funded the building that served our town for so many years? Do you remember the fire whistle signals? Join us and take a look back at the changes the years have brought to the Franklin Fire Department.  Doors open at 1:00pm and the presentation will start at 1:15. 

Admission is always free and we are ADA accessible. 

Be sure to visit our gift shop which is run by the Friends of the Franklin Historical Museum.

Town of Franklin Memorial Day ceremony - 05/30/22 (audio)

FM #809 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 809 in the series. 

This session of the radio show shares the audio of the Town of Franklin Memorial Day ceremony held on the Town Common at the end of the parade on Monday, May 30, 2022. The day was gloriously sunny and the crowd was mostly finding shade and in good voice when required.

Veterans Service Officer Shannon Nisbett is the master of ceremonies.

The meeting runs just over an 1 hour.

Franklin Police to Participate in Accreditation Assessment

Chief Lynch is pleased to announce that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission is scheduled to arrive on June 22, 2022, to begin examining various aspects of the Franklin Police Department’s policies and procedures, operations and facilities.  

Verification by the Assessment Team that the Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain state Accreditation -- a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession, by the profession.

The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards.  In order to achieve accreditation status, the Department must meet all applicable mandatory standards as well as 60% of the optional standards.  

Achieving Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.  Anyone interested in learning more about this program is invited to contact Chief Lynch or the Department’s Accreditation Manager, Deputy Chief James West.

Library Hours

The Franklin Public Library will be closed Monday, June 20th for Juneteenth (observed). The Library’s regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:30-5:00 p.m. The Library will be open on Sundays in June, but closed in July and August.

Book Sale

• Franklin Library Book Sale -  Friday, June 24th ,  1:00 - 5:00 PM.  Saturday, June 25th , 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. All books are just one dollar!
• Bag Sale - $5 A Bag—Saturday, June 25th , from 1:00-4:00 PM Come fill a brown bag with all the books you can!

From the Friends… We have two great recaps we wanted to share with the Franklin Public Library community. The first, a focus on the incredible library staff and the next a recent author event sponsored by the Friends.

APRIL News: “Thank you, have a great day.” These words are uttered countless times throughout the day by the staff at our Franklin Public Library.

I think we can all agree, the team is always gracious and there to help you find a new book, offer a recommendation or point you to where tummy time is being held. For all they do to keep our library going and provide enrichment programs to our community, we wanted to say thank you and help them start their day off right. In honor of National Library Week, the Friends of the Franklin Library celebrated the library staff with some tasty treats and a special raffle as a small token of our appreciation.

We encourage all patrons of the Franklin Public Library to take a moment the next time you’re there to share a favorite memory or give a simple thanks to those who make our library so wonderful. And to the staff, allow us to once again say: thank you for all that you do!

MAY News: On May 12, the Friends sponsored an in-person author event with award-winning author/journalist Nancy Rubin Stuart who discussed and signed copies of her newest book, Poor Richard’s Women: Deborah Read Franklin and the Other Women Behind the Founding Father.  Attendees enjoyed a lively discussion about her book and the research that allowed the story to come to life. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you walked away with a new appreciation for women like Deborah Read Franklin. The Friends of the Franklin Library are always happy to support initiatives such as this one to further enrich our community and benefit all of our Library patrons.

You can help raise funds to support the National Black Doll Museum at the Strawberry Stroll

Franklin Federated Church's Social Justice Team is helping raise funds to support the National Black Doll Museum (formerly in Mansfield) which is looking for a new home. (https://nbdmhc.org).The museum's collection of black dolls is amazing enough, but the facility will be so much more, including services and  workshops.

The SJT will be selling pencil dolls , made by the Museum's director, at the Strawberry Stroll on June 10.  All proceeds will go towards the Museum's building fund. 

More information will be available at the Strawberry Stroll.  FFC's table will be located in front of Envoy Mortgage (between Greco Designs and Escape Into Fiction.)

Reminder: the weekly trash/recycle pick up (May 30-June 3) is delayed one day due to Memorial Day!  

If your regular collection day is Monday, it will now be on Tuesday. One day delay for the entire week. Friday's collection will be on Saturday June 4.

Franklin Farmers Market opens Friday, June 3

The Franklin Farmers Market opens June 3, and is scheduled to operate every Friday through October (except for the July 4th weekend). Hours are scheduled for 2 to 6 PM. 

The Farmers Market brings community together to buy local and support small businesses. The Library will have activities for children. Coordination with the Recreation department will bring "Concerts on the Common", movie nights, and visits from food trucks.
