Breakfast4Vets: Fostering Community Unity and Empowering Veterans Through Sustainable Housing Solutions

On November 10, 2023, the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation (MMSF) proudly presents its annual Breakfast4Vets event. Coinciding with Veterans Day, this hallmark occasion will be hosted at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis, MA. Celebrating our nation's heroes, Breakfast4Vets unites the community in support of the Emergency Housing 4 Veterans (EH4V) program.

 

Breakfast4Vets: More Than a Meal, A Commitment to Change

 

The power of Breakfast4Vets extends beyond the generous breakfast banquet and thought-provoking conversations that have come to define this inspiring event. Guests' participation signifies a tangible commitment to the EH4V program, a critical initiative that provides transitional and permanent housing solutions for veterans in need.

 

As the morning unfolds, poignant narratives from veterans and community leaders illuminate the pressing issue of housing instability among our nation's heroes. Breakfast4Vets presents a call to action, inviting all attendees to stand in solidarity with the brave men and women who have served our country.

 

This year, MMSF is pleased to announce the extension of Breakfast4Vets to a monthly event, starting in December. "We anticipate that the event's popularity will increase its impact," explains MMSF spokesperson, Dawn Roche. "This extension of Breakfast4Vets signals our unwavering commitment to supporting veterans and their families who unexpectedly find themselves in need of emergency housing."

Public higher education is critically important to the success of Massachusetts' economy, but state support has lagged in recent decades. At its best, the public higher education system in Massachusetts can be an engine for academic, career, and personal growth for students, as well as a pipeline for the next generation of workers and civically-engaged residents. Elected leaders have a once-in-a-generation chance to build on recent Fair Share-funded higher ed investments. Exciting proposals that re-imagine higher education accessibility have been put forward - all aiming to make the Commonwealth more affordable and more competitive. In MassBudget's newest report, Higher Education Investments: Supporting Our Economy and Future Generations, Senior Policy Analyst Colin Jones provides analysis and cost estimates for two of the leading proposals: The CHERISH Act would broadly enable students to attend without incurring debt, including generous scholarships and provide other support to faculty and campus infrastructure, at an estimated cost of $790 million.  The Debt-Free Public Higher Education Act would waive tuition and fees for all students while providing additional support for low-income students, at an estimated cost of $1.05 billion. Change in business hours at 67 Degrees' Franklin taproom

Hello everyone! 

Over the next couple of months, we are making some changes to the business hours of the Franklin taproom. Starting this week, the taproom will not operate on Thursdays. 

The hours for the Wrentham Beer Garden will 
remain the same through the end of the season or as long as the weather permits. We will keep you updated on any changes to the taproom hours when the time comes.

Football food is often hearty and flavorful, making it a challenge to pair with wine. However, there are a few key principles to follow to create successful pairings we will discuss:

• Match the intensity of the food with the intensity of the wine. 
• Consider the acidity of the wine. 
• Think about the complementary flavors of the food and wine. For example, the sweetness of Riesling can balance the heat of buffalo sauce, while the smoky notes of Tempranillo can complement the flavors of grilled meats.

Here are a few foods we will talk pairing wines with:

• Buffalo wings
• Nachos
• Burgers
• Chips and dips AND more!

With a little planning, you can elevate your football party/tailgating by pairing your favorite foods with the perfect wines.

Explore the Franklin Civilian Conservation Corp Camp - Oct 14; Hear about evidence of Native American activities - Oct 15

In observance of National Archaeology Month, two events will be sponsored by the Franklin Historical Museum.

On Saturday, October 14 all are invited to meet at 10:00 AM at the Franklin State Forest parking lot on Grove Street as we go back to the 1930's with the CCC. View a brief historical film clip of the Civilian Conservation Corp Camp that once existed here in Franklin. The footage covers the construction (and deconstruction) of the Camp. After the short film, we will walk through the Camp as it exists today within the Franklin State Forest. 

This is a special opportunity to uncover our State Forest's CCC history in plain sight. This free event is scheduled from 10:00 AM - 12 Noon and parking is in the Grove Street Lot. Bring water (and bug spray). The short presentation and walk through is sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Franklin Historical Commission. 

Dianna Doucette

This event is part of a weekend long offering that also includes a Professional Archaeological Talk at the Franklin Historical Museum. On Sunday, October 15, Dianna Doucette from the Public Archaeology Lab (PAL), a private company that performs archaeology surveys for public and private projects, will be presenting at the Museum. She and her firm did work in Franklin in connection with utility corridor work and found significant evidence of Native American activities. 

As part of their charter, they also do public education and, thus, are happy to come to us during Archaeology Month to discuss their findings. Doucette, and perhaps a colleague, will deliver a talk and slide presentation, possibly even accompanied by some artifacts! 

The museum opens at 1:00 PM and the presentation begins at 1:15. It will last about an hour, including a question and answer session. As always, events at the museum are free and open to the public.
