Boys Soccer = Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final
– Franklin senior Tim Duval scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the Panthers to a win on the road. “It was a well played game, our kids played really well together tonight,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. Junior Lucas Moura set Duval up for his first goal, and Duval assisted on classmate Ethan Bowen’s goal.

Girls Soccer = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin scored three times in the final 20 minutes to secure a win in a physical division game. Sabrina Addi opened the scoring for the Panthers and Franklin took advantage of the Bombardiers pushing forward after an equalizer to score two more. Hailey Toolin added the second off an assist from Sydney St. Marie and Anna Blakus sealed the win in the final minute off an assist from Calen Frongillo. Tayla Drape made 10 saves for Attleboro, while Breanna Atwood made four to keep a clean sheet.

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– Franklin recorded a win on the road, knocking off Attleboro 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-11). For Attleboro, Jessica Matheson had eight digs and Chelsea Calcagni added six kills.

US Census: "Microbrewery Business is Hopping"

"According to the County Business Patterns program, between 2012 and 2016 (the most recent available data), the total number of breweries skyrocketed from 880 to 2,802. Of that total, 2,605 had 49 or less employees. 

These small businesses employed over 55,000 workers with a total annual payroll of $2.6 billion. 

Keep in mind that these data only include businesses classified as “breweries.” Businesses that brew their own beer (restaurants and brew pubs) but are classified in other industries which are excluded from these statistics. If these other businesses had been included, the number and growth over the last five years would be even greater."

Local Teen Works With Broadway Star in FPAC’s Newsies

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), the resident theatre company of THE BLACK BOX in Franklin, is bringing the best of Broadway to the suburbs October 13, 14 and 19-21 with its production of Disney’s Newsies. 

The show stars Broadway’s Christopher Rice (The Book of Mormon) and is choreographed by Chaz Wolcott who toured with Disney’s Newsies for two years, appeared in the live film version of the show from Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre, and was featured on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance. The production also provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for Walpole teen Griffin Wilkins: the chance to understudy a Broadway star.

Griffin Wilkins, a senior at Walpole High School and the Franklin School for the Performing Arts, plays “Race” in Disney’s Newsies, a featured role that highlights his dance ability. However, in addition to mastering Wolcott’s intense choreography, Wilkins has the added task of understudying the lead role of Jack Kelly. Traditionally, an understudy is a member of a show’s ensemble who also covers a lead role in case the lead actor is sick or unable to perform. Wilkins has some added duties, explains director Raye Lynn Mercer.

“We’ve had a unique rehearsal process for this show due to four of our leads being based in New York City. While the rest of our cast rehearses here in Franklin, Griffin has had to, quite literally, switch hats in the middle of scenes rehearsing his regular track as well as helping our ensemble understand where Christopher Rice will be during a scene.” The unique process has also taken Wilkins all the way to New York City. “Last week, we held a rehearsal in NYC for our cast members based there and Griffin was able to come along with us to help plug Christopher Rice in, as well as to clean the choreography and vocals,” explains Mercer.

Even at his young age, Wilkins is no stranger to the task of understudying a professional actor. Last March, he appeared as Judah in FPAC’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in which he also understudied Equity actor Andrew Scott Holmes in the lead role of Joseph. This performance won Wilkins a DASH Award for Best Youth Actor in a Musical. 

“Working alongside Chris, knowing that I am understudying an incredibly talented and kind Broadway actor, is an experience like nothing I’ve had before,” says Wilkins, who is currently in the process of auditioning for collegiate Musical Theatre programs. “It is the chance of a lifetime.”

McMahon, a lifelong resident of Cape Cod, won the Republican nomination last month after beating Dan Shores of Hingham in the primary election. Healey ran unopposed."

Field Hockey = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final
– Franklin’s Ashley Reutlinger scored at 1:11 of the second half to help the Panthers earn a tie against Foxboro. Reutlinger’s goal was assisted by Regan Paterson. Christina Luccini made 10 saves in net and Marissa Canesi had a strong game defensively for the Panthers.

Volleyball = Foxboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin improved to 10-0 overall this season with a 3-0 win over Foxboro (25-12, 25-13, 25-16). Ellie Wisniewski (five aces) and Peyton Arone (two aces) paced the offense with seven kills apiece, Riley Marino had 13 digs, and Lauren McGrath continued to have a strong season with 27 assists.

Golf = Taunton, 189 @ Franklin, 167 – Final
– Matt D’Errico earned match medalist honors as the Panthers notched a win at Franklin Country Club. D’Errico shot a round of 40 to pace the Panthers while Gerard Collins chipped in with a 42 for Franklin.

Boys Cross Country = Taunton, 50 @ Franklin, 15 – Final

Girls Cross Country = Taunton, 35 @ Franklin, 20 – Final
– Franklin senior Julia Fenerty earned her first career cross country win and the Panthers swept the top three spots in a win over Taunton. Fenerty crossed in 19:21 while Kat Walbert and Sydney Hawkins took second and third, respectively, for the Panthers. Taunton’s Kailey Melito-Santos was the top finisher for the Tigers, taking fourth overall.

October 2, 2018 Progress in reducing poverty in Massachusetts slows in 2017 Although the state has made significant gains in poverty reduction and income growth in recent years, especially since the recession, year-over-year progress began to slow in 2017. Compared to 2016, the poverty rate was essentially flat, and median household income grew at a much slower pace. More than one in 10 Massachusetts residents lived below the poverty line in 2017, essentially the same as the rate in 2016, according to a new Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MassBudget) brief, Massachusetts Poverty Rate Flat, Median Income Growth Slowed in 2017. Although progress slowed in the past year, Massachusetts' poverty rate is close to pre-recession levels, at 9.9 percent, and is the 10th lowest in the country. From 2016 to 2017, Massachusetts saw a 0.6 percent growth in median household income, from $76,901 to $77,385 (in 2017 dollars) - a growth rate that ranked 37th nationally. Get ready for Franklin’s largest-ever fall festival at the 16th annual Franklin Downtown Partnership Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 13 from 11 AM to 4 PM

Nearly 7,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Harvest Festival which will feature great local entertainment, kids’ activities, artisans and crafters, fall-themed giveaways, and delicious food from local restaurants. 

In case of rain, the Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday, October 14.

The event will be held on Main Street, Dean Avenue, West Central Street, and Depot Street in downtown Franklin, as well as the large parking area behind Rockland Bank. This year, the always popular Harvest Festival promises to be the largest one-day event the Partnership has ever produced.  

More than 160 vendors, crafters, exhibitors and groups will participate in this celebration of the arrival of autumn! Main Street, and portions of Dean and Depot Streets, will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Broadway’s Ben Cameron hosts FPAC Gala - Oct 6

Tickets are still available for this weekend’s Franklin Performing Arts Company Gala: an evening to celebrate Family, Friendship and The Arts. Hosted by Broadway's Ben Cameron, FPAC's Annual Gala takes place on October 6 at 6 PM at THE BLACK BOX. The evening features fine food and drink, live and silent auctions, outstanding entertainment, live music, and dancing. Performers include Broadway’s Ben Cameron, FPAC favorites, and special guest Chaz Wolcott.

Boys Soccer = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Franklin senior Tim Duval set up the Panthers’ first goal and then scored the goal that proved to be the game-winner in a rain-shortened game against Foxboro. Duval set up Donny Tappin inside the opening two minutes to give the hosts an early advantage. Foxboro leveled the game in the 21st minute when Joe Cusack connected with Dylan Barreira. Franklin went ahead again in the 43rd minute when Tappin brought down a service from Sam Stowell and buried from inside the area. The game was called for lightning in the 47th minute despite multiple efforts to restart.

Girls Soccer = Foxboro, 1 @ Franklin 1 – Final
– Foxboro took the lead midway through the first half but Franklin struck early in the second half to earn a draw at home in what both coaches said was a hard fought game from both sides. Warriors freshman Kailee McCabe scored an unassisted goal to put Foxboro ahead. But just 90 seconds into the second half, Hailey Toolin leveled the match on an assist from junior Sabrina Addi. Franklin junior Breanna Atwood made nine saves.

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, and the Federal Communications Commission, FCC, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 3. 

The Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) portion of the test will be sent to virtually all consumer cellular phones in the U.S. beginning at 2:18 p.m. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) test will follow on all television and radio stations at 2:20 p.m. This is the first time the federal government has tested the WEA. 

The WEA test message will appear on mobile phones and will read, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” Phones will display this national test using the header “Presidential Alert.” These nationwide alerts, established pursuant to the WARN Act of 2006, are meant for use in a national emergency and are the only type of alert that can be sent simultaneously nationwide by FEMA. Each phone should receive the message only once."

Field Hockey = Franklin, 4 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final
– Hannah Stryke opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first, but Franklin scored four times over the next half hour to get control. Sarah Carney tied the game for Franklin and Victoria Quinn scored twice (both assisted by Cassi Ronan) to give Franklin a 3-1 lead. Ronan then scored unassisted in the second half to extend the advantage to 4-1. The Tigers answered back with two goals in two minutes, one by Stryke (assisted by Kayla Lozzi) and the second by Maggie Woods (assisted by Emily Dionne) to cut the lead to just one. OA kept pressuring and had several chances to tie it but the Panthers held on for the win. OA coach Sharon Lawrence praise Lozzi for her overall performance. Franklin goalie Anna Jardine made four saves in the win.

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final
– OA won the opening set, but Franklin won the final three sets to stay unbeaten. The Panthers won 17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15. Sadie Homer set a career-high with 40 digs for OA, while Allie Kemp had 31 assists. The Tigers also got 14 kills from Jordan Bosse and seven kills and three aces from Jackie Raymond.

Experience the health benefits of joyful laughter on Wednesday, October 10 from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Meetinghouse of the First Universalist Society in Franklin, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin.

Laughter Yoga is a body/mind practice for well-being that involves deep breathing and a few stretches, playful laughter exercises (no jokes or comedy), clapping and deep relaxation. It can strengthen the immune system, combat the negative effects of stress, and is a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety. 

Any age and any level of physical ability can participate in this uplifting experience! New laughers are always welcomed! $5 donation to the church, $10 maximum per family. Please bring your water bottle because laughing is dehydrating.
