Congratulations, Ji-Yann! Ji-Yann Chin was the 2023 recipient of the Friends of the Franklin Library Scholarship in Memory of Wilma Winters. We had the pleasure of presenting Ji-Yann with her scholarship check for $1,000 at our January meeting. Ji-Yann is loving her first year at UMASS Amherst where she majors in Microbiology and is considering a double major in Public Health with a concentration in disease prevention. In her scholarship essay, Ji-Yann wrote passionately about what gives her hope for the future. After visiting with Ji-Yann at our meeting we think she is a young leader who inspires hope for the future, and we look forward to saying "We knew her when…" The Friends wish Ji-Yann all the very best in her studies and beyond!

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node: Meeting, Thursday, February 1, 2024; and Legislative Action

The 350 Mass Greater Franklin Node will hold our next meeting this Thursday, February 1, 2024, 7:00-9:00 pm.

This will be a HYBRID meeting: you can attend in person, or join on Zoom.

Those of us who have been meeting in Franklin have enjoyed the chance to come together. We hope others will do the same.

·       Location of the in-person meetingFirst Universalist Society in Franklin, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin

·       OPTION:  Join on Zoom

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81930304274?pwd=Tm9VdGxYcDFaVTVDUkwyT3YvUnlFdz09

Meeting ID: 819 3030 4274

Passcode: 350ma

Dial-in +1 646 876 9923

This week, Feb. 1, during the first part of the meeting, 7:00-7:45 pm, we'll have a Weston volunteer present how his town organized a campaign to successfully adopt the Municipal Opt-in Specialized Stretch Code, with Q&A following. Why is this important? Because Franklin and other towns in our node are working to adopt the bylaw, and spring town meeting agendas are being set now! Come hear his presentation!

BACKGROUND: One of the recommended local actions of the 350 Mass Emissions Free Buildings campaign is adoption of the Municipal Opt-In Specialized Stretch Code. This new level of building code pushes new construction towards our Massachusetts state-mandated goals through deep energy efficiency, reduced heating loads, and efficient electrification. We will also share resources that all of us can use in our own communities.

Here is another important matter: We ask everyone to contact your state Representative and Senator this week! All the information you need is here in this Action Alert

BACKGROUND: We want our Legislature to pass climate and energy bills that are priorities for 350 Mass and the larger Mass Power Forward coalition. Now is the time to push legislators to have our key climate bills reported favorably out of committee. If not reported out favorably soon (February 6 is the current deadline, although it could be extended), bills will be effectively dead for this legislative session.

For more news about ongoing and upcoming events, please sign up for the Climate Weekly email. Also, check out upcoming events on our website

We look forward to another informative and action-oriented Node meeting. We hope you can join us, in person or on Zoom. We will send a reminder on Thursday.

Our next meeting after this week will be the 3rd Thursday of the month, February 15.

Thank you.

Carolyn Barthel

Franklin LGBTQ Alliance Newsletter - Meeting Feb 1 at the Library

Join us Thursday at 6 for our monthly meeting!
Franklin LGBTQ Alliance
In this newsletter we include an invitation to our next meeting and community events, including our next book club discussion, and include more opportunities to get involved.
You're Invited to our Upcoming Meeting

When: Thursday, Feburary 1st at 6pm!

Where: Franklin Public Library

What: Black History Month Trivia!
CALL TO ACTION: Flying the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag in Franklin!

We encourage you to attend the town council meeting Wednesday at 7pm!

The town council will be discussing and voting on a town flag policy that would allow the town to fly a PRIDE flag in June. A flag flown during PRIDE would demonstrate the town's support of LGBTQ+ residents of Franklin.

This is a goal many in our community have been working towards for a long while. You can show your support by attending the council meeting, and by contacting your councilors and letting them know how you feel!

A few notes: Citizens will not be given the opportunity to comment on the flag policy during the council meeting, since it is already an item on the agenda. However, your presence in the audience will show the council just how many people this flag policy is important to. You can find email addresses for town councilors by following this link: https://www.franklinma.gov/town-council

As always, please be sure to be respectful of the town council, its procedures, its councilors, and others as you communicate. We may end up meeting other residents with different viewpoints about flying the PRIDE flag. Remember that even if we disagree we can still demonstrate civility in our interactions.

The Nields are scheduled for the Circle of Friends Coffeehouse - Feb. 10 at 8:00 PM

The Nields
The Nields

The Nields
February 10
8:00 PM - $25

Circle of Days is the twenty-first album by the folk-rock group, The Nields. That is remarkable in itself. How many other bands have been together for so long producing new material on a regular basis? What is most remarkable is that this album may be its best work yet. The versatile musicians on this album explore a variety of genres, from Appalachian folk ballad to gospel to some of the most rocking songs since the earliest incarnations of the band. The production beautifully balances each sister's vocals, bringing out the best in their individual vocal styles and then bringing them together in their exquisite harmonies.

The Circle of Friends Coffeehouse is a non-profit organization affiliated with Franklin's First Universalist Society. Concerts are presented in a smoke free and alcohol free environment at the Society's handicapped accessible Meetinghouse, 262 Chestnut St. in Franklin, and begin at 8:00 PM; doors open at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for this show are $25. Beverages and gourmet desserts will be available. Please visit https://circlefolk.org/ to purchase tickets or for more information.

Upcoming Shows
Matt Nakoa, Garnet Rogers and Susan Werner!
