FHS baseball tops Sharon on Saturday; Coach Eian Bain hired by Bridgewater-Raynham

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Saturday, Apr 13, 2024.

Baseball = Sharon, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin did all of its damage offensively in the fourth inning while senior Matt Miller had a spectacular outing on the mound in a 3-0 win over Sharon. Miller tossed a complete game one-hitter for the Panthers, surrendering just a leadoff single in the fourth while retiring the side in order in the other six innings. He didn’t allow any walks and added eight strikeouts in the win. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Sean Kryzak had a one-out bunt single and came flying around from first to score on a double from junior Zach Winer. Winer eventually scored on a passed ball and Cole Sidwell, who reached on a single, stole second, and advanced to third on the passed ball, came home on a sacrifice fly from senior Jake Shaughnessy. Sharon’s Cole Arundale was solid on the mound with three runs allowed (two earned) on five hits and one walk, striking out seven in six innings.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 3 @ Wellesley,  19 - Final

And for FHS Football via Ryan Lanigan, HockomockSports
Franklin football coach Eian Bain has been hired as the new head coach at Bridgewater-Raynham. Bain spent the last eight seasons of the helm of the Panthers. Great hire for the Trojans. #hockomock

Dean College will be the home of the first Ruth Solomon Symposium - June 21 & 22, 2024

Dean College will be the home of the first Ruth Solomon Symposium, a multidisciplinary educational event designed for physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, allied health professionals, dance instructors, and dancers. The two-day symposium will be held at Dean College in Franklin, MA on June 21 and June 22, 2024. The theme of the event is "The Science Behind the Dancer: Optimizing Dancer Health," and will provide an opportunity to learn and review the fundamentals of care and instruction throughout the dancer's life.

"Dancers are elite athletes and an important portion of our students' training here at Dean focuses on prevention, because an injury can have a significant impact on their performance, careers, and mental health," said Marc Arentsen, Dean of the Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance. "Empowering teachers, health practitioners, and dance professionals in this space with new knowledge and strategies to safeguard well-being and longevity in this demanding art form, makes educational symposiums such as this critically important. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful campus in June to participate in this tremendous opportunity to learn, exchange knowledge, share experience, and support those who live to dance."

Dean College and Boston Children's Hospital will hold a symposium in June designed to ensure the health of dancers.

Data from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network concludes that dance is the most physically demanding job in the country. The research looked at five types of physical activity — dynamic strength, explosive strength, time spent running or walking, stamina, and trunk strength. Studies have also shown that 80 percent of dancers incur at least one injury a year that affects their ability to perform, compared to a 20 percent injury rate for rugby or football players. Dean is one of only a dozen colleges in the U.S. that has a full-time certified athletic trainer on staff, dedicated to the performing arts.

Boston Children's Hospital has a long-standing collaboration with both the School of the Arts and the School of Dance at Dean that includes a medical affiliate agreement; standing orders for licensed certified athletic trainers to provide onsite injury care and prevention; nutrition talks provided by Boston Children's registered dietitians; and dance affiliate referral privileges. Additionally, Dean's dedicated performing arts athletic training facility hosts monthly clinics staffed by Boston Children's physicians, and for even more hands-on support, Boston Children's clinicians often join Dean's performing arts athletic training staff backstage during dance concerts.

"Without question, dancers are deserving of high-level medical care and injury prevention support," said Amanda Donahue, Dean's Performing Arts Athletic Training Program Coordinator. "Over the past decade, we have been able to expand this assistance for our performing artists through our collaboration with Boston Children's, and this partnership has been instrumental in providing specialized performing arts medical care to our students."

Upon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to:
  • Identify risk factors and strategies to optimize dancer health and wellness;
  • Translate dance medicine research to clinical practice and dancer training;
  • Understand the multidisciplinary approach to the developing dancer;
  • Incorporate nutrition and mental health in the assessment, treatment, and training of dancers;
  • Understand innovative strategies for evaluating and treating dance related injuries including dynamic MSK ultrasound, EPAT, and orthobiologics; and
  • Discuss and demonstrate various styles of dance and recommendations for injury treatment and prevention.
"There has been a noticeable gap in translating dance medicine research from the clinical practice into the dance studio," said Bridget Quinn, MD of Boston Children's Hospital's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine department. "The Ruth Solomon Symposium has been created to try to bridge this gap by bringing together the physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and dancers to look at the current research and standard of care and to develop practical tools to improve our dancers' health and wellness."

The symposium has been named for Ruth Solomon (1935-2023), who was a recognized professional modern dancer, choreographer, and international teacher in academia. The published author of many scientific articles, books, and research studies centering on dance medicine, Ruth volunteered for 39 annual three-month residencies under the direction of Dr. Lyle Micheli at the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children's. Here she conducted several major dance medicine studies. In 2010 she was named Honorary Fellow of the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children's. She was also elected Fellow of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) and was given an IADMS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

Pre-registration for the symposium is required and costs $100 to $300, depending on the participant's professional accreditation.

It seems only fitting then that The Encore EnHarmonix proudly releases their very own Beatles tribute album, "FAB," this week on all digital platforms, including Apple, Spotify, Amazon, and YouTube, to name a few.

Franklin.TV: Eclipse, It Happened!

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 04/14/2024

Major networks covered the eclipse – live – from several locations across the U.S. TV stations along the path of totality had their own local news teams weighing in. Good coverage. Lots of fanfare and cheers. Then – on to the next news cycle.

Franklin.TV was also covering the eclipse – at the precise centerline of totality, four miles North of St. Albans, Vermont. Precise? Within a hundred feet or so, in the Champlain Country Club’s parking lot. This is where the more seasoned and serious eclipse trackers headed. For some, this was their third. Others, their fifth. We interviewed several as they set up computerized tracking systems. We learned much about eclipses, the science, and the humanity as well.

“Lots of folks headed to the park in downtown St. A’s . That’s gonna be a mosh pit. This is exactly where you want to be.” (Good advice.)

The experience of totality is quite literally other worldly.

While Sun and moon may be small against the sky, the vast scope of it completely envelopes you because the entire sky

A 360-degree wraparound ecliptic ‘sunset’
A 360-degree wraparound ecliptic ‘sunset’
above becomes as dark as a new moon night. (Only a new moon can eclipse the Sun.) Then, the unexpected. We were on somewhat higher open ground at a golf course. While we were centered in the deep cone of totality, the far horizon all around us was still lit, and we experienced a glorious, 360-degree wraparound ‘sunset’ effect.

Our new friends – the eclipse chasers went silent, some had tears of joy. We were all totally together in the moment. They’re also providing some additional images. Our eclipse special will be completed later this year. What might we reveal? For now, we’ll just have to keep you in the dark.
Thanks for listening to 102.9 wfpr●fm.
And – as always – thanks for watching.

Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention

As adults, perhaps our biggest responsibility in our lifetime is to protect our children, and the uncertainty of the world today has made that more important now than ever before.

As part of our commitment to social responsibility to the communities we serve, the Hockomock Area YMCA, along with YMCAs throughout Massachusetts and across the nation will be sponsoring Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention, a campaign committed to raise awareness and inspire adults to take an active role to protect children from sexual abuse.  Please visit one of our three branches to pledge to take action to protect kids all year long.

While child protection is our Y’s number one priority every day, this critical campaign will run April 15th through April 19th as we approach summertime, and will shine a collective spotlight on how everyone can do something to prevent child sexual abuse.

Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention
5 Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention
Our Y will share information and resources each day to our members and community partners about how adults can prevent, recognize and respond to child sexual abuse situations to keep children safe.

Statistics from Praesidium and the CDC indicate that 1 in 20 boys and 1 in 4 girls in the United States are sexually abused, typically by someone they know and trust. Child sexual abuse is happening regardless of age, gender, race, religion or socio-economic class.

But these are not just numbers. Behind every number is a child, a child who has been robbed of their innocence. A child whose life will forever have been changed by the heinous act of an adult. We owe it to our children, and we owe it to their future, to do better.

Help us prevent child sexual abuse through Know, See, Respond.  When adults know how abuse happens, see the warning signs, and respond quickly to prevent abuse, they foster a culture of child abuse prevention. Together we can bring awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse in our communities and have important conversations on how we can all work together to prevent it from happening. Please join our YMCA to spread important awareness and resources with your social networks and family and friends around this devastating epidemic.

Our YMCA is proud to partner and collaborate with school systems, municipalities and other human service organizations throughout our service area to help bring awareness, education and training regarding this issue. We remain committed to this collaborative cause and our effort to be part of a community-based prevention movement.

Our YMCA was awarded Praesidium Accreditation® in February by Praesidium, the leader in abuse risk management.  To achieve accreditation, our Hockomock Area YMCA underwent a rigorous process to implement Praesidium’s Accreditation Standards focusing on eight primary operational areas within our business: policies, screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, internal feedback systems, responding, and administrative practices. Praesidium then verified our Y’s successful implementation of these standards. The Hockomock Y will be accredited for three years, and during this time will commit to uphold fundamental organizational values and stringent safety practices that demonstrate our commitment to protecting those in our care from abuse.  We are proud to be part of the 24 YMCAs across the nation to reach this status and look forward to helping mentor other YMCAs in their process of becoming accredited.

As responsible adults, we need to give children a happy, healthy and safe childhood. Our world needs them, and they need us. Let’s give them the childhood they deserve.

CEO
Hockomock Area YMCA

Economic Development moves proposal to reduce parking minimums to Town Council (audio)

FM #1170 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1170 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares Franklin, MA Economic Development Subcmte meeting held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 in the Council Chambers. All 4 members participated; (3 in Chambers, 1 remote (Frongillo).

Quick meeting recap:

  • Bryan Taberner provided an update on moving to compliance with the MBTA requirements and per the update from MAPC, changing the commercial mixed use parking requirements would provide sufficient units to become compliant

  • The initial proposal would be to remove commercial parking minimums for mixed use, keeping residential parking minimums. This would not change the other single use commercial requirement for parking minimums. The calculation would produce enough units to be compliant with MBTA community requirements. It would also require a definition of "mixed used", something already recommended from the Franklin For All project

  • The ensuing discussion revolved around removing parking minimums (period). arguments put forward on both sides, ultimately agreeing to move the proposal as amended to remove all parking minimums for discussion at the Town Council and if consensus to further the process by referring to the Planning Board, etc.
