Second Sunday Speaker Series: Uncas, Hero or Villain - Oct 12 at 1:15 PM

Join Historical Commission Chair Alan Earls for a slide show exploration of this complex and crucial, Colonial-era leader whose name adorns a town pond and multiple roads in Franklin. 

Uncas helped to give the Mohegan tribe of Connecticut its own identity and culture, which survives to this day, but has drawn criticism for his cooperation with invading English settlers. We will dive into his life and times and his legacy in a 45-minute talk. 

The program starts at 1:15.  The museum is open from 1-4 and admission is free. 

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, Franklin. The museum is open Saturday mornings from 10AM-1PM (except as noted above), Sunday afternoons from 1:00PM-4:00PM, and, experimentally, Thursday from noon to  5 PM.

The Pumpkins Are Here! Time To Decorate!

The pumpkins are  at St. John’s Episcopal Church now through Halloween

The pumpkin patch returns to St John's for October!

Come visit the 6th Annual Pumpkin Patch at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 237 Pleasant Street, Franklin. It will be open through Oct. 31.

A huge selection of pumpkins, gourds and colorful mum plants will fill the front lawn at St. John’s Church. Kids will have fun picking out their favorites. It’s a cute photo opportunity for families and a good time to start decorating for autumn.

Open 7 days a week, here’s the schedule:

• Monday-Friday 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
• Saturdays 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
• Sundays Noon - 4:00 PM
• Monday October 13, open all day from 10 AM to 5 PM

The pumpkins are grown using sustainable agricultural practices that help benefit the environment. They are grown in a region of New Mexico with 42% unemployment, providing jobs for Navajo people. Proceeds from pumpkin & plant sales benefit the Navajo Nation in New Mexico as well as St. John’s Church and its service in the Franklin community.

For the second time in three years, Franklin tied the game in the final minute and kicked the go-ahead point after to stun Taunton at Pisini Field.

In what was essentially a 97-yard swing in momentum, the Panthers put together a clock-chewing, game-winning drive. Under the guidance of freshman quarterback Ethan Edmunds, Franklin marched 71 yards on 14 plays, draining six minutes and thirty-five seconds off the clock before senior Alex Weber punched in the tying touchdown from 10 yards out with just 49 seconds to play.

Owen Essam drilled the point after, and Franklin’s defense stood tall on Taunton’s last-second push to lock up a 21-20 win."

More than 6 million Americans are living with a form of dementia, and taking a look at life through the eyes of someone with cognitive decline is a small step to better understanding their daily experiences.

The Dementia Experience uses sensory modifications and role playing activities to depict real situations that a person living with Mild Cognitive Impairment or dementia would face. Getting dressed, taking your daily  medications and preparing a meal, are all simple activities that are severely thwarted by cognitive disability.

The Dementia Experience thrusts you into the daily life of someone with dementia by simulating the physical ailments afflicting many seniors and creating the frustration, confusion and anxiety that accompanies cognitive impairment.

Listening session schedule set for Chapter 70 Local Contribution Study by DESE & DLS

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education today announced a series of public hearings regarding the state chapter 70 formula. The listening sessions are part of a Chapter 70 Local Contribution Study included in the state’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget and conducted by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Department of Revenue’s Division of Local Services (DLS).

These listening sessions will inform the final Chapter 70 Local Contribution Study that examines the methods used to determine each municipality’s target local contribution and required local contribution toward school funding. The study will also consider the impact of factors such as income and property wealth, the effect on municipal services, and the unique challenges of rural and regional school districts. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and DLS expect to release the final report in the summer.

Our next 350 Mass Franklin Node meeting will this one time be held next Wednesday, October 15th from 7-9 PM.  It will be a hybrid meeting, meaning both in person at FUSF, 262 Chestnut Street in Franklin, as well as on Zoom for those who can't make it in person.

The reason for the change is that a special No Kings Safety and Security Training will be held in the FUSF sanctuary on our usual meeting date of Thursday, October 16th in preparation for the national No Kings demonstrations taking place Saturday, October 18th.  Some of our members will be attending this training session.

Fallen Hero Recognition: Emilio Dadario, October 10, 2025 - 9 AM

Memorial event today (10/10/24) at 9 AM on the Town Common Veterans Walkway to honor Emilio Dadario. 

The brief program will include  

• the placing of a Memorial Wreath for the day 
• a reading of whatever history  may be available for that veteran
• a salute from those present
• the playing of Taps 

This is a way of keeping the memory of that veteran alive.

The program is conducted on the Franklin Town Common along the Veterans Walkway by the granite column of the individual being remembered on the day of their recorded passing.

Emilio Dadario, Private, US Army,  WWI

Emilio Daddario was born in Ofena, Italy in 1895 of Mr. & Mrs. Dominico Daddario. He lived in Franklin for about 17 years before he answered the call to defend his new nation.

He entered the service on September 20, 1917, and was assigned to Company F, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 76th Division, and shipped overseas on March 12, 1918.

Among other responsibilities, Emilio was the company bugler, a duty of which he was very proud.

On the battlefield, he served in Company K, 28th Infantry, 1st Division and was killed on this date in 1918.
