*** Wrestling = Lowell Tournament
– Canton’s Eddie Marinilli became the first wrestling in program history to win an individual title at the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament. Marinilli took first in the 145 bracket, which featured 60 wrestlers. Marinilli knocked off the fifth seeded wrestler in the quarterfinals to earn his 100th career win and then took down the top-seeded grappler Jacob Cardozo of Southington in the semifinals. In the finals, Marinilli used takedowns in the first and second periods, plus an escape in the third, to pick up a 5-3 win. 

Franklin had the top finish as a team, taking 17th overall with 89 points. Foxboro was 21st with 80 points, Canton totaled 72 points, Stoughton had 35 points and Taunton finished with 27 points. 

Franklin’s Jordan Carlucci (132) was the top Panther, taking third overall while Jake Carlucci (113) and Dominic Sackley (170) each took eighth. For Foxboro, William Ogebebor battled his way to a third place finish at 220 and Adam Lanctot (120) had a sixth place finish. Taunton’s Woudanly Danger (285) was seventh overall.

"It’s always clear that the bigger the gift during the holiday season, the more fun children will have with the box that contained it. That’s why the Franklin Public Library’s annual “Box City” event in late December has become so popular. 

Children’s Librarian Caleigh Keating hosted the third annual Box City event on Friday afternoon. Children from Franklin and surrounding communities came to create the mini-municipality in the gathering room at the library. 

With dozens of donated boxes, egg cartons and other items, children were able to fill the room with their own box structures and other designs, creating Box City. 

Keating said the event is a success every year."

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 63 vs. Brighton, 35 – Final
Franklin clamped down defensively, forcing Brighton into 32 turnovers on its way to a big win over the Bengals. The Panthers forced 12 turnovers in the first quarter alone and hit their first eight shots from the floor, taking a 25-6 lead after eight minutes of play. Junior Chris Edgehill had a team-high 15 points, senior Will Harvey added eight points, and Jack Rudolph finished with seven points and three assists. Franklin will play host Bridgewater-Raynham in the championship game of the Larry Fisher Holiday Tournament on Saturday at 4:45.

– Franklin senior Joe Lizotte and junior Shane McCaffrey each scored once but the Panthers fell in overtime to host Mount St. Charles. Ryan Cameron had an outstanding game in net for the Panthers. The game will go down as a tie for MIAA purposes.

December 26, 2018 Minimum wage increase to $12 will benefit 662,000 workers In response to a multi-year grassroots campaign, Massachusetts lawmakers this year made a significant move toward ensuring workers can earn enough to support their families - by raising the Massachusetts minimum wage from $11 an hour to $15 by 2023. January 2019 will mark the first step in this progression, when the state's minimum wage goes from $11 to $12. This increase will affect 15 percent of Massachusetts working parents and 19 percent of children in the state, according to a new Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MassBudget) analysis http://massbudget.org/report_window.php?loc=Impact-of-$12-Massachusetts-Minimum-Wage.html. The increase will give a raise to the majority of food service workers (68 percent) and about a third of workers in human services - which include those who work in child welfare, disability services, and elder services. Franklin Art Association January 2, 2019 Meeting

The Franklin Art Association will meet on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street in Franklin.

Refreshments and social time will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by a short business meeting, an art supply swap and jewelry-making clinic led by FAA President, Pam Warren.

In the News: MA Governor, legislators get raise; action being called for on climate change

"Two years after legislators ignited an uproar by voting through a generous package of pay raises for themselves and other public officials, the salaries for incoming lawmakers on Beacon Hill are going up again by almost 6 percent. 

Gov. Charlie Baker certified a raise of 5.93 percent for the 200 members of the House and Senate beginning for the 2019 and 2020 session, raising the base pay for legislators by $3,709 to $66,256. 

Baker is also in line for a hefty pay increase, with the governor’s salary set to grow from $151,800 to $195,970. He will also receive a housing allowance of $68,854. 

The size of the pay increase for Baker is as large as it is in part because the Republican turned down a pay raise in 2017 that would have increased his salary from $151,800 to $185,000 after the Democrat-controlled Legislature overrode his veto of the pay raise package."

"Massachusetts has been a leader when it comes to environmental legislation but in the wake of a federal report detailing the impact of climate change, many local activists say there is more to be done. 

The report predicted that the average global temperature is much higher and rising more rapidly than ever before in modern society. It also forecast continued rising temperatures and sea levels, resulting in more frequent flooding, wildfires, as well as the spread of food- and water-borne illnesses. 

Climate change has become an issue of heightened importance in recent years, especially for Massachusetts voters. In a WBUR poll from last year, 88 percent of registered voters in the state said they were concerned about climate change, up from 77 percent in 2011. 

Massachusetts became one of the first states in the country to legislatively address climate change with a regulatory program. In 2008, the Global Warming Solutions Act was signed into law, requiring the state to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050."
