In the News: Strange Brew planning to open brewery; Gaspee Days this weekend in RI

"For more than two decades, Brian Powers has been helping to teach people to brew beer at home. 

Now, the longtime owner of Strange Brew homebrew shop, plans on opening the Strange Brew brewery and taproom, and he hopes to educate consumers about the art or brewing. 

“I’ve been teaching people for 20-plus years and I still want to do that,” said Powers, 46, of Holden. “I’ll be running the taproom myself, I’ll be able to talk about the beers, the process, what went into it. I want to help people appreciate the beer.” 

The brewery and taproom will share space with the homebrew shop at its 416 Boston Post Road East location. The space, home of the former Laser Zone, is more than 16,000 square feet and has more than enough space for both businesses, Powers said."

"Rhode Islanders feel slighted that Bostonians get all the glory for helping spark the American Revolution with the Boston Tea Party. After all, more than a year before any tea was tossed, Rhode Island colonists burned a British ship. 

Saturday is the 246th anniversary of the day a local ship captain lured the British schooner HMS Gaspee into shallow waters a few miles south of Providence, where it ran aground. A smaller model of a ship will be burned Sunday to commemorate the forgotten act of rebellion. 

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse often recounts the story of how colonists waited till night fell, rowed out to the stranded Gaspee, shot the ship’s captain and burned the boat. It’s a cool story about an extraordinary act, said the Rhode Island Democrat. By comparison, he said, Massachusetts patriots mustered the courage to push tea off the deck of a British boat more than a year later. 

“It’s going to be a long, slow process to try to correct 240 years of the Massachusetts megaphone, but I think it is important to stick up for historic deeds that were done by Rhode Islanders,” said Whitehouse, who spoke about the Gaspee Affair Monday on the Senate floor."

"Arun Kavishwar and Saketh Saripalli know a little something about success. 

The Franklin High School juniors and members of Franklin’s DECA club placed fourth at DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta in April. Their project focused on making location scouting for films more accessible to the general public. 

Location scouting “has not been opened to the independent creator,” Kavishwar said. He said their project “was a way of decentralizing and making (the location scouting) market available to anyone.” 

Their project, called Scoutis, “dramatically reduces the price of location scouting to under 1 percent of the current price, targeting those independent creators who have been priced out of the current industry,” Kavishwar wrote in an email. “Currently, location scouting requires a three-person team, equipment and a great deal of logistics; our platform removes all those barriers, requiring only one person and a phone (camera).”

Handicap Parking for Strawberry Stroll

We wanted to let you know that there will be handicap parking available at the Dean Bank parking lot during the Strawberry Stroll on Friday from 5 PM to 8 PM.

This will give seniors and others with mobility issues only a short walk to the strawberry shortcake tent in front of Dean Bank. We will have plenty of chairs and tables as well.

Also, there will be room for senior buses to drop off seniors in the Dean Bank parking lot off Dean Avenue. Please keep in mind that Main Street will be closed so buses will need to enter off Dean Avenue.

We look forward to seeing everyone Friday evening!

FHS baseball and boys lacrosse post wins to advance in playoffs

Baseball = Super 8 = #7 Franklin, 8 @ #2 Wachusett, 5 – Final
– Wachusett erased a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to tie the game but Franklin responded by scoring in each the eighth and ninth innings to prevail in the program’s first-ever Super 8 game. Wachusett tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the seventh but Franklin was able to get a runner out at third trying to advance to erase any further damage. Bryan Woelfel earned the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two. Jake Noviello had a strong outing on the mound, scattering five hits, four walks, and six strikeouts over six innings of work. Franklin’s offense had a strong day with Cooper Ross leading the way with three hits and two RBI. Colby Fitzgibbons (run), Scott Elliott (double, four RBI), Alex Haba (triple, two runs, two stolen bases), Jake Macchi (RBI, run) and Evan Wendell (two runs) all had two hits apiece for Franklin.

Boys Lacrosse = D1 South = #13 Mansfield, 7 @ #4 Franklin, 13 – Final

"It’s tough to rank players in terms of importance on the field, but there is certainly no doubting the value in Franklin junior face off specialist Jacob Alexander. 

Alexander’s second half dominance at the face off X translated into a big half for the fourth-seeded Panthers, resulting in a 13-7 win #13 Mansfield. 

The two Kelley-Rex division rivals were knotted 4-4 at halftime but Franklin dominated time of possession and scoring chances thanks in part to Alexander’s continued success at the ‘X.’ Those possessions and chances resulted in an 8-0 run over the third and fourth quarters. 

“It all starts with Jacob, he’s such a key component to our success,” said Franklin head coach Lou Verrochi. “What can you say? He’s winning 86% of his face offs, he’s such a tough draw for any team. He’s so talented, and for a kid his size, he’s got good wheels, he can really play. He’s got great ground ball skills, great dodge skills…he could be an effective first line middie really.”
