MassBudget: What is the Actual State Cost of MassHealth?

What is the Actual State Cost of MassHealth?

Every month, the MassHealth program (Massachusetts' Medicaid program) provides health insurance for more than 1.8 million residents of the Commonwealth: children in low-income households; low-wage workers; elders in nursing homes; people with disabilities; and others with very low incomes who cannot afford insurance. This is more than one-quarter of the Commonwealth's population, including close to half the state's children. Not surprisingly, such a comprehensive program represents a large share of the state's budget. But how much?
Since Medicaid is a partnership between state and federal governments, much of this essential health care coverage is actually paid for by the federal government. MassBudget's new fact sheet, written for the Massachusetts Medicaid Policy Institute, explains that the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget includes approximately $16.7 billion for MassHealth. This total (or "gross" amount) is approximately 36 percent of total state budget appropriations. The federal government then reimburses Massachusetts for more than half this spending. After receiving these reimbursements, the state's net cost for MassHealth is $8.3 billion, 24 percent of the total net budget.

Town Council recap: Ag Commission, Fire Captain sworn in, robot enters the Chamber, Electric Youth perform

The Town Council meeting Wednesday was one of the most varied and entertaining meetings in a long time.

FSPA's Electric Youth sang a song as part of their annual visit before heading to their annual tour in Europe.

The Agriculture Commission presented an update on what they have done since they were formally approved last year.

The 4H Alarm Robotics Club presented an overview of their operation and educational mission. They will lease the Red Brick School as their base of operations in Franklin. They had been located in the old Thompson Printing building (until it was torn down) and recently in another location in Bellingham but wanting to return to Franklin.

After the Council approved of the lease arrangement, their robot entered the Chamber to deliver the pen for the signing ceremony. With some technical difficulty they did demonstrate the robots movements and capabilities along with how the team operated under pressure and recovered from problems.

A Franklin Wine Club Event
June 13 - 7 PM

Post House wines are perhaps the darkest colored wine to be found anywhere. The objective is to interfere as little as possible in the creation of the wine making process. They use traditional wine making methods including natural yeast fermentation, basket pressing and no fining or filtering.

Come and explore South African wine and this great winery!

This is a sit down wine tasting/educational event held in the Franklin Liquors wine room

RSVP is required
cost is $5
