In the News: possible change to housing zoning removing 2/3 majority; BFCCPS applications open

"Gov. Charlie Baker’s proposal to make zoning changes easier at the local level is one step closer to passage after the Housing Committee voted to advance it alongside 20 other bills aimed at generating new housing production.

 The Housing Committee voted 16-1 in a poll that concluded Thursday afternoon to favorably report out Baker’s bill, according to a copy of the results acquired by the News Service. The Boston Globe first reported Wednesday that the poll was underway.

 All 20 other bills, which range from a proposal to establish a housing production task force to one that would set a statewide housing production goal, also advanced with only one dissenting vote. State Rep. David DeCoste, R-Norwell, voted against each bill, while state Sen. Patrick O’Connor, R-Weymouth, reserved his rights on some votes.

 ...

 The legislation would lower the local voting threshold needed for zoning changes from a two-thirds majority to a simple majority, a difference that Baker and supporters argue would allow more projects to get approved rather than fail on a 3-2 City Council vote or with only 55% backing."

"The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School is accepting applications for the 2020-21 school year.

 In a press release, school officials said siblings of currently enrolled students will have priority enrollment status; thereafter, applicants from all 13 communities in the school’s district will have an equal chance at securing a spot for their child through the annual enrollment lottery to be held on March 4.

 Applicants from outside of the region, but who reside within Massachusetts, will be eligible for enrollment should additional spaces remain after all sibling and regional applicants have been placed."

"88% of parents perceived a positive impact on their child’s quality of life due to the later start times"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"A survey on this year’s later school start times at Weston High and Middle schools, which was given to students, faculty and parents, found that “all groups in general have found the change in start time to be positive,” Superintendent of Schools Midge Connolly told the School Committee last week.

 “Parents and guardians, in particular, responded most positive to the changes,” she said.

 The school day at Weston High and Middle schools runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The Country, Field and Woodland elementary schools run from 8 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.

 One of the largest issues continues to be students released early from class in order to make it to athletic contests."

Representative Roy works with Treasurer Goldberg to connect residents with unclaimed property

Almost two and a half million dollars owed to constituents in Franklin and Medway

 Representative Roy joined State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg today (Friday, Dec 20, 2019) to notify his constituents that they may have property in the Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Division. There are almost two and half million dollars owed to residents in Franklin and Medway.

“We currently hold over $3.4 billion in unclaimed property at the Treasury and it could be yours,” said State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, “I would like to thank Representative Roy for helping the Treasury in our mission to reconnect individuals with their property in Franklin and Medway.”

 “I enjoyed working with Treasurer Goldberg to reunite my constituents with their unclaimed property. Since you may be one these individuals with property held by the Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, this is your opportunity to get it back,” said State Rep. Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin). “The faster you file a claim, the sooner you will be reconnected with your money, so please respond right away.”

 Each year, the state receives large amounts of unclaimed property, including forgotten savings and checking accounts, un-cashed checks, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, dividends, and the contents of unattended safe deposit boxes. Most accounts are considered abandoned and are turned over to the state after three years of inactivity.

 This past year, the Division was able to reunite over $125 million with over 115,000 residents, businesses and charities in the Commonwealth.

The Division has a website, findmassmoney.com, where you can search for property and make claims. This coming year, the Treasury is hoping to return even more money to more citizens.

Both FHS boys and girls swim, boys and girls basketball post wins vs. Canton on Friday

Boys Basketball = Canton, 39 @ Franklin, 66 – Final
– Franklin denied the visitors a basket in the opening quarter to build a 16-point lead and never looked back, running away with a league win over Canton. The Panthers took a 37-9 advantage in the halftime break with seven players scoring in between the first two quarters and 11 total for the game. Senior Steven Karayan hit three three-pointers while classmate Chris Edgehill sank a pair, combining for half of the Panthers’ 10 three-pointers in the game and tying with a game-high 13 points apiece. Matt Lazarek added 10 points for Franklin while sophomore Lanse Dorcelus paced Canton wight eight points.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 61 @ Canton, 34 – Final 
– Sophomore Olivia Quinn scored 22 points to lead the Panthers on the road, her second straight game of at least 20 points. Ali Brigham added 16 for Franklin. Fay and Sydney Gallery scored 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

 Boys Swimming = Franklin, 96 @ Canton, 74 – Final

 Girls Swimming = Franklin, 90 @ Canton, 78 – Final

 Boys Indoor Track = Franklin, 29 vs. Mansfield, 71
– Final – Mansfield swept three events, including two won by Andrew Williams, to earn a win over Franklin. The Hornets took the top three spots in the 55M dash, the 55M hurdles, and the long jump with Williams taking first in both the hurdles (8.47) and the long jump (19-11.00). Sophomore Dylan Buchanan (8.80) and sophomore Jake Wall (8.98) completed sweep in the hurdles while senior Joe Cappelletti (19-00.00) and junior Stephen Saba (16-11.25) were second and third, respectively, in the long jump. Williams also took first in the high jump, with a league-meet best leap of 6-04.00. Cappelletti won the 55M dash in 6.94 with Wall taking second (6.96) and senior Ethan Thevenot (7.16) rounding out the top three. Other winners for Mansfield included senior Jack Rivard (300M, 38.02), senior Mike Mullahy (2 Mile, 10:22.44), and junior Nico Holmes (shot put, 42-09.25).

Girls Indoor Track = Franklin, 41 vs. Mansfield, 59 – Final

 Girls Gymnastics = North Attleboro, 138.35 @ Franklin, 133.20 – Final
– Franklin sophomore Kate Rudolph was the top Panther in all four events and won the All Around but the Rocketeers picked up a close win in the meet. Rudolph was first in the All Around, edging out North’s Lindsay Robinson (34.95) and Megan Collins (34.1). Rudolph scored a 9.0 on the vault, an 8.25 on bars, an 8.9 on the beam, and an 8.95 on the floor.
