NEW! Nonprofit Management Certificate for Practitioners
Boston Globe: "A pop-up gallery fills a vacant spot in Providence with joy and light"
Franklin received a grant to create a Pop Shop downtown. From the Boston Globe we share what Providence has done with a popup shop as an example.
"During the pandemic, downtown Providence was living in its own shadow, with empty storefronts and restaurants that were “hibernating” for the winter or closed for good. But these days, cobblestone-lined Westminster Street has started to feel alive again, thanks in part to three Rhode Island-based women and their new pop-up art gallery, “Reflection-Delight.”
Curated by Sheryl Kopel, a freelance artist manager and facilitator, the temporary exhibition has filled 233 Westminster St., a space that is usually vacant. She’s chosen two artists whose styles are vastly different, but whose work looks to project “joy and inner strength that fly in the face of darker trends in the wider world.”

FM #540 - Virtual Person On Street - Brian Brannan - 05/03/21 (audio)
FM #540 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 540 in the series.
This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Brian Brannan. My first “person on the street” interview. Although we did do this via a virtual conference bridge to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.
Brian and I get to know each other as we explore his work, Quality Assurance testing for Terrible Posture Games. Yes, this was a fun adventure. You will likely learn a thing or two. I did. Especially on how ‘gamer’ is not a good term to use these days.
The recording runs about 32 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Brian

Recap - School Committee meeting - FHS highlights; school choice vote, acceptable use policy moved to 2nd reading
- Student
enrollment is a driver for budget. Student Opportunity Act (SOA) is not a major help for Franklin's budget. Franklin will see no major additional funding (we already get more than the formula would permit). Franklin will see some
transportation and circuit breaker funds to help with those expenses. The structural deficit will not be addressed by the to be developed facility 'master plan' which may include redistricting. SOA will force the Town portion of school budget funding to increase each year. This will remain an issue for the school budget (and Town) until addressed
- Town Council budget hearings scheduled for May 26 and 27 to approve FY 2022 budget.
- FHS Principal Josh Hanna provided an overview of the high school experience this year and updates on the year end including graduation plans
- Acceptable use police moved to second reading. Approval for a FHS revolving fund account granted. School choice will not be allowed for next year (this continues the practice in place for many years)
