FHS senior Ali Brigham was named one of the Girls Basketball: Ten Players to Watch in 2019-2020 by HockomockSports.com.

"Every season Brigham has improved different parts of her game and last year it came together in a completing dominating performance that earned the George Washington University-commit league MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year honors. Brigham scored 25.6 points per game, reaching the 1,000-point plateau for her career, pulled down more than 17 rebounds per game, and blocked more than six shots per game.

She led the Panthers to a division title, the D1 Central title, and had them minutes from a spot in the D1 final. If she continues at this pace, then Brigham could finish her career as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Numbers aside, Brigham continues to develop her all-around game, not just controlling the paint with her height but also showing off quick feet to cover forwards and extending her range on offense and forcing defenses to cover her further from the basket.

After stepping her game up to a new level in the postseason, Brigham looks poised for a huge senior season and is the primary reason that Franklin is the heavy favorite to repeat in the Kelley-Rex and is a state title contender this winter."

FHS girls hockey win big, wrestling goes 3-1 in Quad meet, girls swim post win vs Canton

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of FHS winter sports action on Saturday.

Girls Hockey = Stoughton, 0 @ Franklin, 7 – Final
– Franklin opened the season with a big win at home over visiting Stoughton. Freshman Lyndsey Atkinson had a big debut, scoring her first goal while adding a pair of assists to lead the way. Sophomore Maggie McCaffrey, freshman Shaw Downing, and freshman Molly Hurley also scored their first career goals for the Panthers win the win. Gabby Colace had a 12-save shutout for the win.

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the boys hockey game recap:

"Canton was on its heels for large portions of Saturday night’s season opener at Pirelli Veterans Arena, struggling with the speed of the Franklin forwards and struggling to find the outlet passes that would send the Bulldogs racing forward into the offensive zone.

Still, the Bulldogs know how to find ways to win games. Senior forward Shane Marshall took advantage of a fortuitous bounce off a skate to score a power play goal with 11:27 to play and it turned out to be the difference in a 3-2 victory that extends Canton’s unbeaten run to 27 games and makes it four straight wins against the Panthers.

“It was probably not as tightly played as we’re used to, but that’s a really good team,” Canton coach Brian Shuman said. “They’re a very skilled, high-flying team this year. They were doing some stuff that we hadn’t seen them do in the past. I was very impressed with them, they played very well, and they took it to us.”

"Amid growing concerns about toxic chemicals in the water supply, state regulators Friday announced significant new limits on the human-made compounds in drinking water and approved new requirements ordering polluters to clean up contaminated soil and ground water. 

The long-awaited rules come as environmental officials acknowledge that the per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals, known as PFAS, have been found in a growing number of communities across the state. 

The chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, low infant birth weights, and a range of diseases, have been found so far in 28 of 37 municipal water systems that have provided test results to the state Department of Environmental Protection, officials said this week. Of those, 12 found that the amounts exceed the proposed standards for drinking water."

• The prior conversations around the field replacements (completed in 2017) were centered around the crumb rubber infill. The Town spent more for an acrylic coated infill (which apparently was installed), the issue now is NOT with the infill but the with chemicals used to treat the carpet itself.

"In 2000, Massachusetts voters handily approved a ballot question meant to reduce the state’s income tax rate to 5%.

Two decades later, they’re finally getting their wish.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker announced last week that on Jan. 1, the income tax rate will be cut from 5.05% to 5%.

The tax cut marks the end of a process that began in 2002 following passage of the ballot question two years earlier."

Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams top Milford to open season

HockomockSports.com has posted the results of League action on Friday night. Here are the FHS results.


Boys Basketball = Franklin, 56 @ Milford, 34 – Final
– Franklin raced out to a 35-11 lead by halftime and never looked back in a win on the road over Milford. The Panthers’ held the Scarlet Hawks to eight points in the opening quarter and just one field goal in the second quarter to take a commanding lead. Senior Chris Edgehill scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the way. Edgehill, Steve Karayan (two), and Brayden Sullivan each hit hit from downtown in the second to help Franklin pull away.

Girls Basketball = Milford, 25 @ Franklin, 81 – Final
– All 12 Panthers scored, as they started their title defense with a convincing win. Ali Brigham led the way with 25 points and Olivia Quinn added 17. Emma Lawrence paced the Hawks with eight.

The Simplerecycling program is a confirmed success and we want to let you know there are many more items that are accepted in the pink bag.

That includes:

• All clothing

• Shoes, belts, scarfs, purses, hats, gloves, backpacks, bibs, coats, boots, sneakers, ties, etc.

• Household textiles: Curtains/drapes, bedspreads, sheets, pillows, sleeping bags, towels, etc.;

• Kitchenware: Glasses, dishes, silverware, pans, etc.

• Small electronics: Radios, hair dryers, curling irons, etc.

• Small decorative items: Knickknacks, pictures, etc.; and

• Miscellaneous: Jewelry, toys, tools and other small home goods that can fit in the bag

Regular curbside recycling continues for metal food and beverage cans, plastic bottles, jars, jugs and tubs, glass bottles and jars and paper and cardboard in the RECYCLING CART.

"In recognition of widespread frustration over problems that have arisen with commuter rail service, state Rep. Jeffrey Roy is looking to give local commuters a chance to be heard by the MBTA and Keolis. 

To that end, Roy, D-Franklin, is hosting a public meeting with representatives of the transportation entities next Tuesday. The session convenes at 7 p.m. in the Town Council chambers at the Franklin Municipal Building, 355 East Central St., Franklin. 

Roy said his office has seen a marked increase in the number of complaints from constituents about commuter rail delays and cancellations over the last couple of months, particularly since a yearlong pilot program to gauge interest in weekday rail serve to Foxborough began in October. 

“They (constituents) have reached out by phone, email, Twitter and Facebook and they are frustrated by the lack of reliability on the heels of yet another fare increase,” he said Wednesday. “As a 28-year rider of the commuter rail and one who continues to use the service at least once a week, I completely understand their angst.”

Reminder: Franklin Line replaced by shuttle buses this weekend

Shuttle buses will replace Franklin Line service between Forge Park/495 and Readville Stations while we upgrade the signal system as part of Positive Train Control (PTC) work. 

Also during this work, connecting train service between Readville and South Station will be on the Fairmount Line. There will be no Franklin Line service at Ruggles or Back Bay.

Franklin Police: "Swatting" Incident on East Street

Media Release, "Swatting" Incident on East Street

On December 13, 2019 at approximately 2:30pm the Metacomet Emergency Communications Center (MECC), which serves as the regional dispatch center for the Towns of Franklin, Wrentham, Norfolk, and Plainville received a call reporting an individual was being held hostage in an apartment on East Street in the Town of Franklin. The caller further indicated that he was armed, and prepared for a law enforcement response.

Franklin Police patrol officers and detectives responded to the area and established a perimeter and residents of the surrounding buildings and apartments were escorted from the area. After safely removing neighbors, officers successfully made entry to the apartment and determined that no threat existed. No persons were located in the apartment in question.

Several communities including the Towns of Wakefield and Newburyport have also received similar reports in recent weeks. These types of calls are often referred to as "swatting", where a caller attempts to invoke a large police response to an unsuspecting person or address.

Deputy Chief of Police James Mill stated "these calls needlessly put people at risk, and tie up police resources which may be needed for true emergencies." Mill further stated "this investigation is just beginning, and more will be done to attempt to uncover the person responsible. I am proud of the professional response by all the members of the Franklin Police Department who brought this situation quickly under control, and to a safe ending."

The incident was concluded at approximately 3:30pm, and all surrounding streets which had been closed were reopened. Residents in the area were advised of what had transpired, and that they could safely return to their residences.
