This is what the competition announced about us:
"The Engineering Inspiration Award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s organization, and community. Inspiring others to respect science and technology requires passion, knowledge and commitment, and we recognize these qualities through this award.

2079 is giving the competition a wake up call. Despite working with a limited budget, they proved their innovation isn't about resources, it's about determination. Through inclusive STEM workshops and mentorship, they've inspired future engineers across all ages, showing that anyone can build, create, and dream. Their impact reaches far beyond competition, proving that true engineering comes from resilience and passion for sharing knowledge."

August 14 Town Council meeting - audio in 2 parts: legislative update (2 hours) & remainder of meeting (1:40 )

FM #1263-1264  This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1263-1264 in the series.

This session shares the Franklin (MA) Town Council Meeting of Wednesday, June 17, 2024.  All 9 members were present in Council Chambers. We split the audio into 2 parts, creating a section just of the State legislature update by Senator Becca Rausch and State Rep Jeff Roy, and leaving the opening hour, and remainder of the Council session in the first part.

Quick summary of Part 1 (#1263)

Annual Reappointments and New Appointments of Boards and Committees Members

Unanimous approval for the appointments/re-appointments. This should complete the slate of current board, committee, commission positions with a couple of exceptions. Town Administrator Jamie Hellen updated that likely early in 2025, an effort to solicit more volunteers for the various positions would be conducted to help refill the potential candidate pool for future opportunities. Note: all the positions appointed are for staggered terms within the respective boards, etc. This is done to enable some organizational knowledge retention among the members of each org. It is easier for 1, 2, or 3 members of a committee to ‘get up to speed’ than it is for an entire group.

PUBLIC HEARINGS

a. Zoning Bylaw Amendment 24-906: Changes to §185-3. Definitions, Mixed Use Development Definition

b. Zoning Bylaw Amendment 24-907R: Changes to §185-21 Parking, Loading and Driveway Requirements

c. Zoning Bylaw Amendment 24-908: §185 Attachment 7. Part VI, Addition of Mixed Use Development to Use Regulation Schedule

The passage of these 3 measures should bring us into compliance with the MBTA Community requirements set out by the State. We were close to begin with, and then with the changes started with the Franklin For All project, we got closer. There are still some improvements possible that could be coming as part of the Master Plan. These 3 get us into compliance with the State requirements which keeps the coffers open for grant opportunities. The 3 measures were approved unanimously.

d. Zoning Bylaw Amendment 24-913: Zoning Map Changes from Business to Commercial I, an Area on Union Street Near Franklin Crossing

This measure rezones the area along Union and Cottage near the Mill Store and sets it up for redevelopment in mixed use, both residential and commercial/retail space. You can see what the developer is doing with the former Clark-Cutler-McDermott building as an example of what can happen here. This should be good. It was approved unanimously.

ALARM Robotics wins 2nd place at BSU competition! (video)

4H ALARM Robotics won the 2nd place finalist award with its alliance partners while competing with 36 other FRC teams at the NE District BSU Event 2024.

ALARM Robotics is a local non-profit community team which has been mentoring students in robotics since 2007 and is set up in Franklin’s very own historic Red Brick School. ALARM stands for ‘A Lot of Awesome Robot Makers’. The team participates in FRC–-FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION run by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). We accept students from 8th to 12th grade from Franklin and neighborhood towns.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is a mix of sports and engineering. It is a crossfit workout for the muscle upstairs!  Here students get to learn how to build robots, specifically machining, computer aided design and programming. Teams design a new robot every season, the theme of this season was “Crescendo

ALARM Robotics wins 2nd place at BSU competition!
ALARM Robotics wins 2nd place at BSU competition!

The 4H ALARM team participates in competitions in the New England area. After the game kick-off in January, the students and mentors work for over 9 weeks, sometimes putting in over 20-30 hours every week to design, build and program a robot for doing specific tasks for the challenge.

Our robot, Hydra, is a 120 lbs. robot programmed to pick up and shoot foam notes into a target area. Its name was inspired by the mythical immortal beast with immense power. At Bridgewater State University, our robot was flawless in placing the shot and rarely missed or bounced. Much like any other sport, the goal is for the robots to score maximum points throughout the 2:30 minute game. At the end of each of the 3v3 matches, the robots have to hang on a “stage” during the endgame.

4H ALARM Robotics has been teaching robotics at the Franklin Public Library over the past few months and they presented their outreach work at the competition and also won the Team Spirit Award. This award "celebrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit through exceptional partnership and teamwork furthering the objectives of FIRST”.

The team's next competition will be at Worcester Polytechnic Institute from March 29,30,31st.

4H ALARM Robotics is supported by generous sponsors- Dassault Systemes, Pratt & Whitney, TE Connectivity, Gene Haas Foundation, General Dynamics-Mission Systems, Mathworks, Natural Resources Management, Tib Family and partners 4H and the Franklin Public Library.

Students participating in FIRST Robotics Competitions are eligible to apply for nearly $22 million in scholarships from more than 200 colleges and universities.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with FIRST Alarm Robotics held in the Franklin TV & radio studio Jan 4, 2024. Steve Dunbar, Business Manager and Pallavi Naravane, one of the group’s mentors.

Our conversation touched on the following:

  • So what is 4H Alarm Robotics 2079 all about?

  • How did you get involved and what is your current role?

  • How many members do you have and where are they from?

  • What the team has done over the past year.

  • What else can you tell us that could get folks to check out 4H Alarm Robotics?

  • Where can they get more information?

The conversation runs about 30 minutes so let’s listen and find out about Alarm Robotics. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1131-4h-alarm-robotics-2079-01-04-24
