Crazy Reading Ladies send "love to the Librarians!"

From the "Crazy Reading Ladies"

"For the love of librarians
For over a decade, our school district has suffered the loss of librarians. Sure, our middle school boasts a big, beautiful library space - we even have a decent budget for books - but there is no librarian to cull the collection, to staff library time, or to help students select the books that will make them fall in love with reading. We know the science, and we know what a tragedy this is.

We are The Crazy Reading Ladies, after all. We know adolescents, and we know good books. We read YA and middle-grade literature almost exclusively. We're cool! We follow our favorite authors and publishers on Twitter and Instagram. We know how the use the internet. We can talk books all day long; in fact, we love nothing more than spending time with students and matching them to books. We also know that we are not librarians, nor do we have access to the thousands of books and online resources that await public library patrons.  Our students need more than we can give them.  Libraries are the answer. The public library is a wealth of resources - ours offers everything from books, to apps, to clubs, to social opportunities, and safe gathering spaces."
Continue reading about the "love for librarians"  (you can also follow the link for other photos telling the story) ->

As the budget season gets into gear for the Town of Franklin and Franklin Public Schools, it might be worthwhile to check on what is being done to address the library resources and how it being addressed with the budget dollars.

FM #944 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 944 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Franklin’s Fire Chief James McLaughlin. We met in person to record this at the Franklin studio on February 9, 2023.  We opened our conversation joking about not jinxing us since we had last recorded just before the COVID shutdown occurred in 2020

Chief McLaughlin shares the highlights of the last three years and the changes he had started making in his first nine months and the accomplishments of the department overall since then.

This conversation runs about 32 minutes. Let’s listen to my conversation with Chief McLaughlin. Audio file -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-944-town-of-franklin-fire-chief-james-mclaughlin-02-09-23

Thank You Franklin Future Leaders for Planting Grasses for the DelCarte Turtle Nesting Habitat

Thank You Franklin Future Leaders for Planting Grasses for the DelCarte Turtle Nesting Habitat

Last Thursday, the Franklin Future Leaders planted big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) in biodegradable pots to help supply native grasses for the recently permitted turtle nesting habitat at the DelCarte Conservation Area, a component of the DelCarte Biodiversity and Buffer Zone Restoration Plan. The Leaders will be nurturing the seedlings at their respective homes until later this Spring, whereupon the Leaders will plant the grown grasses at DelCarte. The Conservation Department and Commission want to thank the group for their volunteer efforts, service, and advocacy!

For more information on the DelCarte Biodiversity and Buffer Zone Restoration project and to follow the progress, visit here. To see how you can help, please contact the Conservation Agent at bgoodlander@franklinma.gov

Thanks again, Franklin Future Leaders!
