From Hockomock Sports, we share the results of the FHS spring sports action on Saturday, April 22.

Softball = Franklin, 3 vs. Bridgewater-Raynham, 2 – Final

Rachel Cousineau drew a walk, Ally Shea singled and both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Olivia DiGiacomo then delivered the game-winning hit with a base hit. The Panthers scored their first run in the fifth inning when Cousineau knocked in Tara Hartnett (2-for-3), who led off with a double. Cherry earned her first career win in the circle for the Panthers.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 9 vs. Masconomet, 5 – Final

Take the Story Walk at DelCarte

The Story Walk should be a good way to stretch your legs today and explore a book and the open space. Yes, the playground is closed for now. It should re-open in June but in the meantime, the trails are still open and the short green trail is used for the Story Walk.

A collaboration between the Library and Recreation Dept the Story Walk spreads a children's book along a trail.

Exercise, read and explore as you go.

I captured the story walk in photos on Saturday to share here.

Voices of Franklin: Ed Hurley on Child Abuse Prevention month

April is Child Abuse Prevention month. And once again YMCAs in Massachusetts and across the country are engaged in raising awareness and education in a campaign called Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention.

From April 24 – April 28, our Y will highlight information, resources, and methods on how to prevent, recognize and respond to child sexual abuse.

Research reveals that 1 in every 10 children in the United States will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.

Sadly, in more than 90% of the cases reported, this abuse happens by someone the child knows and trusts. This threat to children represents a health risk that can only be described as an epidemic based on the disturbing prevalence of abuse that exists in all elements of our society.

Equally disturbing is that it doesn’t have to happen. Child sexual abuse can be prevented through community wide efforts and vigilance. A predator seeks three things for abuse to occur. Access, privacy and control. With proper policies, procedures and protocols, all youth serving organizations can minimize the risk and deny an offender the access to harm children.

For the past five years our YMCA is proud to have partnered and collaborated with school systems, municipalities and other human service organizations throughout our service area to help bring awareness, education and training regarding this issue to the forefront. We remain committed to this collaborative cause and our effort to be part of a community based prevention movement.

Please join us.

While we place a special emphasis on this topic during the month of April, child safety and child protection remains our Y’s number one priority every single day of the year. For more information, please visit our website for resources, training and how you can become involved at www.hockymca.org.

At our branches next week, we will be asking members, staff and volunteers to sign pledges to protect children. We will be displaying these signed pledges throughout our branches during the week to promote and emphasize the importance of community based prevention.

The safety of children is the responsibility of all adults. Children represent our hope for a bright and promising future. Let’s work together to protect our kids and help ensure that promising future and protect their only childhood.

Mansfield tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Franklin junior Jason Ulrickson was impressive on the mound, giving up just one earned run on seven hits and just one walk in a complete game effort. Ulrickson also struck out five and had two RBI and a run scored on the offensive end. Bendanillo slid in just ahead of the tag to give the Hornets the lead. Franklin put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Sarah Cahill got the final two outs to earn the complete game win. Mansfield took a two-run lead in the top of the seventh. Megan Letendre reached on an error and Bendanillo was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Marissa Staffer and Kerran Holmes. Franklin rallied with two in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Connor O’Rourke made 17 saves in net for the Panthers while sophomore Jacob Alexander won 18 face offs.

“It’s been a long time in the making”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Though the building behind the recreation department’s Beaver Street headquarters is filled with tools, lumber and scissor lifts, it will be home to goals and basketball hoops before long.
The town is hoping to open the building this summer, finishing work on the department’s complex.
Department Director Ryan Jette said the purpose of the space is to add onto the programs his department is able to offer.
“Right now, the recreation department’s main gymnasium use is in the Franklin Public Schools,” he said. “We use their gyms for things like recreational basketball. We have 1,300 kids in recreational basketball - we could never house the program here - but we could augment what we have.”
