Summer 2018 Music Programs

July 9–20, 2018

8:30 am – 12:30 pm

$300 per program

40-hours of summer music fun!  Ensemble rehearsals, recreational time, spirit days and much more.  Students end the two weeks with a performance and a celebration.  All programs take place at Franklin High School except Rock Band Jr. and Musical Theater Jr., which are at Horace Mann Middle School.

CONCERT STRINGS – Entering 4th and 5th grades with 1 or 2 years of playing experience

SYMPHONIC STRINGS – Entering 6th-9th grades with 1 or more years of playing experience

CONCERT BAND – Entering 5th and 6th grades with 1 or 2 years of playing experience

SYMPHONIC BAND – Entering 7th-9th grades with 1 or more years of playing experience

ROCK BAND JR. – Entering 4th–6th

GLEE – Entering 4th-7th grades

MUSICAL THEATER JR. – Entering 3rd–7th grades

MUSICAL THEATER – Entering 8th–12th grades

TECHNICAL THEATER – Entering 6th–12th grades

"The Franklin Public Library, 118 Main St., will host local author Arlyn Halpern on Tuesday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. 

Halpern, a psychotherapist and writer, will give a talk about her new memoir, “Dancing into the Light.” It’s a heartwarming tale of her journey from a challenging childhood in suburban Chicago to self-discovery and greater wisdom through dance, living in three countries, and intensively studying mindfulness and meditation in India and the U.S. with a Buddhist master. It’s a compelling tale of love, loss, adventure, humor, and personal and spiritual growth. 

“There are many joyful and funny experiences (in the book) - dancing in a carnival at age 15 and falling in love to name a few,” says Halpern."

FHS Baseball in Super 8 tournament, plays Weds vs Wachusett

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, writes about the baseball Super 8 selections made on Sunday.

"The Hockomock League is invading the Super 8 tournament. 

For the first time in its five year existence, the Super 8 will include a Hockomock team; two teams, in fact, as both Mansfield and Franklin were selected by the tournament committee at the MIAA offices on Sunday evening. 

Mansfield was the fourth team nominated in the first round and Franklin was put up for discussion three teams later. Both received a 5-2 vote from committee members, which put them into the second round for reconsideration. 

BC High and St. John’s Prep were the only two teams of the 14 nominated that received unanimous 7-0 votes in the first round to get automatic bids. Franklin and Mansfield were joined by Central Catholic, Wachusett, Walpole, Austin Prep, St. John’s Shrewsbury, Catholic Memorial and Lexington up for consideration in the second round.

After the teams were selected for the Super 8, the committee voted on the seeding. Mansfield earned the #5 seed and will play at #4 Central Catholic. Franklin was seeded at #7 and will travel to play #2 Wachusett. Both games are scheduled for Wednesday at 4:00 PM."

"It was on June 20, 1793 that Norfolk County and the Registry of Deeds came into existence thanks to a bill signed into law by then Governor John Hancock. As some residents of Norfolk County will proudly tell you, next to his being the lead signer of the Declaration of Independence, this was probably the second most important signature in John Hancock's life," noted Register O'Donnell. "Today much has changed," noted O'Donnell. "Back then it was a time when land documents at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds were written in the old cursive penmanship style by scriveners. Deeds told stories, such as John Adams tribute to John Hancock when Adams deeded a portion of his land to the city of Quincy. Additionally, people had to travel to the county seat in Dedham to research land documents. Today research can easily be done from the comfort of your home computer. And those 18th and 19th centuries land documents written in the hard to read cursive style now can be read in an easy to read text format." The Register noted that the night will be a celebration of history as county residents will be able to browse at notable land records of prominent and famous people of Norfolk County, including Nobel Prize winners and Governors of the Commonwealth. Additionally, there will be an exhibit of land records that highlights 28 remarkable people, one from each of the 28 communities comprising Norfolk County. "You will be amazed at the contributions that these men and women have made to the arts, science, culture, politics, environment, public service, military, medicine and the law," said O'Donnell. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 20th from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds located at 649 High Street, Dedham. In the News: MA Democrats endorse Gonzalez, Palfrey, Zakim

Democratic State Convention delegates at the DCU Center on Saturday endorsed Jay Gonzalez for governor and Quentin Palfrey for lieutenant governor, and in a rebuff to longtime incumbent William Galvin, backed Josh Zakim for secretary of state.

Gonzalez, of Needham, who served as secretary of administration and finance under Gov. Deval Patrick, received 70 percent of the delegate vote to win the endorsement for governor.

A rival candidate for governor, Bob Massie, of Somerville, an environmental activist, author and Episcopal priest who was Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in 1994, received 30 percent of the delegate vote and earned a place on the primary ballot.

Convention endorsements go to statewide candidates who receive a majority vote of the delegates. But any candidate who receives 15 percent of delegate votes earns a place on the ballot for the Sept. 4 primary, which will decide the nominees for the general election on Nov. 6.
