Franklin TV: Jan 6! - "Rare for us to say, 'Watch the other channel'"

“De-cem-ber 7th - 1 9 4 1; a day that will live in infamy.”  Thus spake Roosevelt.

“Jan-u-ary 6th - 2 0 2 0; a day that will live in infamy.” That’s what I say.

These dates of historic crisis leave indelible marks on the American psyche. Why? On both occasions America was viciously attacked. Plain and simple. We can debate the long list of differences, but the objective was the same. Our enemy (foreign or domestic) was intent on disrupting our democracy in a surprise attack.

This time our President said, “Go home in peace. You’re very special. We love you.” Whaaaat ?!?

On Thursday evening the Jan 6 Committee began unveiling the hard facts of that horrific day. Taking in their extensive investigations and exhaustive interviews with many witnesses is not as easy as embracing an easy pithy three-word-chant.

Lock – her – up! Stop – the – steal! Hang – Mike – Pence!

Most Americans will struggle to stay tuned to the hours of case logic, the legal framework and orderly telling of fact, but this is the stuff of history. As in any war, there was brutal combat. People were wounded. People died. The causes and horrors of that day are being laid out clearly before our eyes, and we should not look away. Future historians will see the January 6 Committee broadcasts as an enduring reference. There are several more sessions to watch in the days ahead.

While we are always grateful when you take some time to watch our programs, it is entirely appropriate that we recommend you take in all that the Committee is presenting. It is a rare TV event that can be regarded as a civic duty.

All three FHS teams win to advance, Baseball in Final Four, boys & girls lacrosse set for rematches vs Lincoln-Sudbury in Round of 8

Via HockomockSports.com and the Boston Globe, we share the results of the FHS spring sports playoff action on Saturday: 

Baseball - Division 1 = #9 Bridgewater-Raynham, 0 @ #1 Franklin, 5 – Final 

– Franklin scored all five of its runs between the fourth and fifth innings and senior Jacob Jette tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Panthers to a spot in the Division 1 Final Four. The Panthers had a run on in each of the first three innings before finally cashing in in the fourth inning, sparked by a leadoff single from Evan Raider. Pinch runner Jacob Crisileo moved to second on a ground out and then to third on a single from Jase Lyons. Eisig Chin smacked a two-run double to score the first two runs, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a squeeze bunt from Ben Jarosz. In the fifth, Ryan Gerety led off with a double, took third on a passed ball, and came home to score after a dropped third strike. Chris Goode, who earned a one-out walk and stole second, came in to score on an RBI single from Henry Digiorgio. Jette worked around a bases-loaded situation in the first, getting his second strikeout in the inning to end the frame. After that, he only allowed one hit (one-out single int he fifth) and one walk (lead off in the fourth) while retiring the side in order in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings, finishing with eight strikeouts. Franklin will play #4 Shrewsbury in the D1 Final Four with a date and time to be announced.

Boys Lacrosse - Division 1 = #10 North Andover, 7 @ #7 Franklin, 12 – Final 

– A dominant first half paved the way for Franklin in a win over North Andover, earning the Panthers a date with Lincoln-Sudbury in Round of 8. A pair of goals from Luke Davis and one from John Walshe presented the Panthers with a 3-0 lead after a quarter, and Franklin followed with a 6-0 second quarter to seize a 9-0 lead by halftime. A dominant defensive performance kept North Andover in check through three quarters, as Franklin took a 10-2 lead into the final frame. Davis finished with five goals, Jayden Consigli added a pair of goals and three helpers, and Tyler Sacchetti chipped in with a hat trick and an assist. Matt Corvi made 19 saves while Justin Alexander went 18-for-23 at the faceoff X. Franklin will travel to #2 Lincoln-Sudbury on Tuesday at 6:30.

Girls Lacrosse - Division 1 = #22 Lexington, 2 @ #6 Franklin, 19 – Final 

– The Panthers pumped in a dozen goals in the first half and pitched a second half shutout in a big win over Lexington. Franklin raced out to an 8-2 lead with 10 minutes in the half and then outscored the visitors 4-0 before halftime for a 12-2 lead. Franklin went on to win the second half 7-0. Stella Regan scored five goals, including her the 100th of her career, and added an assist, Kaitlyn Carney also had five goals and one helper, while Katie Peterson (three goals, one assist) and Lindsay Atkinson (one goal, two helpers) also had a part in the attack. Head coach Kristin Guarino praised her defense for a great effort in the second half shutout.

School Committee Action Item: Davis Thayer declared school surplus

Re: Davis Thayer Elementary School Property
Date: June 9, 2022

I want to commend the administration, faculty and staff, families, and students for their work towards building a unifying culture at Keller Elementary School this year where students from the former Davis Thayer Elementary School and Keller Elementary School districts attend. It has not been easy and they have been focused on the student-centered nature of the transition and the building of a new school community.

As noted in two previous updates in the Superintendent’s Report, this fall, building principals walked the Davis Thayer school building and identified items to be repurposed throughout the district. This included classroom desks and tables, office furniture and chairs, and other instructional materials.

Throughout the year (and currently), the building is in use, providing much needed storage throughout the district. It has been holding some furniture and it is also holding all of the district and town COVID-related PPE. The building is being maintained by the Facilities Department at a lower cost, compared to normal operations.

As noted in January, we consulted with MSBA to inform them of steps we have taken, as taking Davis Thayer out of the purview of the School Committee has implications for future building projects. MSBA has been responsive and indicated that we have met notification requirements.

The Space Needs and Facilities Assessment Subcommittee has examined available space across the District, space needs based on our enrollment and specialized programs, and space utilization with an eye towards potential building projects and redistricting. Their presentation to the School Committee and community will be June 14, 2022. Although there are some places in the District that are pressure points related to space, the Facilities Assessment of the District’s schools pointed to places where Davis Thayer Elementary School could not meet current expectations for teaching and learning. This included inaccessibility and lack of ADA compliance, classrooms spaces that do not meet contemporary instructional standards, and concerns related to the physical safety of the facility. As such, the administrative team continues to believe that the Davis Thayer Elementary School is not a viable solution.

Therefore, I recommend that pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 15A, that the School Committee declare that the Davis Thayer Elementary School property is no longer needed for school purposes, and further that the School Committee notify the Town Council of that determination.
