THE BLACK BOX Sings… Waitress Concert Starring Broadway Cast Members

THE BLACK BOX, the region’s premier music, theater, and event venue, is thrilled to bring back THE BLACK BOX Sings… Concert Series outside under the stars this summer. Kicking off the 2024 series is THE BLACK BOX Sings… WAITRESS on June 28th at 8:00pm.

Starring Emily Koch (Broadway’s Waitress, WICKED, Kimberly Akimbo) and Jim Hogan (Waitress on tour, Broadway’s Kimberly Akimbo) with Ali Funkhouser, April Lisette, Dan Callaway, Robbie Rescigno, Nick Paone, and an ensemble of Franklin Performing Arts Company favorites. Join THE BLACK BOX for a celebration of the beloved Sara Bareilles score.

Emily Koch starred as Jenna on Broadway and on tour in Waitress and will return to THE BLACK BOX to lead the concert alongside Jim Hogan from the touring company. Both Koch and Hogan recently closed the Broadway production of Kimberly Akimbo.

Modeled after the popular cabaret series “54 Sings” at 54 Below in NYC, THE BLACK BOX continues THE BLACK BOX Sings… Series this June and August. The series celebrates the music of musicals, composers, and artists sung by Franklin Performing Arts Company favorites. Table seating and general seating are available. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside.

2024 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Awards recognize MacCallum, Consigli, Grasso, & Flynn

2024 HockomockSports.com Girls Lacrosse Awards recognize the following Franklin High School athletes:

Norah MacCallum – Franklin – Defense

Franklin senior defender Norah MacCallum was the leader of the back line all season for the Panthers, helping them secure a 14th straight league title and extend the program’s Hockomock League win streak to 122 games (dating back to the 2012 season). MacCallum finished the season with 21 ground balls and caused 30 turnovers. The Panthers were second in the Hock, allowing just 159 goals in 22 games (a little over seven per game) despite playing some of the best teams in the state. MacCallum was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Norah was the backbone and leader of our defense. She played a key role in our zone this year and really excelled at getting us the ball back.”

Gabi Consigli – Franklin – Attack/Midfield

Franklin junior attacker Gabi Consigli made a big leap this spring and became one of the most consistent attacking threats for the Panthers, helping them bring home a 14th consecutive league title and extend a decade-long league win streak to 122 games. Consigli was one of the team leaders in goals (30), assists (24), and total points (54), as Franklin revamped its attacking unit with several new faces this spring and, despite facing tough competition all season, averaged nearly 10 goals per game. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Gabi was a solid attacker for us this year. She made big strides from her sophomore year to this year, and did a nice job setting up her teammates.”

Maeve Grasso – Franklin – Defense

Franklin junior defender Maeve Grasso put in a solid season in the heart of the back line, a crucial part of the Panthers clinching a 14th straight league title and extending their decade-long league win streak to 122 games. Grasso had 16 ground balls and caused seven turnovers this season for the Panthers, who allowed a little more than seven goals per game despite a difficult non-league schedule. The Panthers allowed 159 goals in 22 games, which was second-fewest in the Hock. Grasso was an honorable mention for league all-star. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “I was excited to see Maeve on this list because our defense was really our strong point this year. Maeve might not have a ton of stats, but without her intelligence, communication, and leadership, our defense would not have worked.”

Julia Flynn – Franklin – Midfield

Franklin junior Julia Flynn excelled in a much larger role in the Panthers midfield this season, showing off an all-around game that was crucial to Franklin winning a 14th consecutive league title and extending its remarkable league win streak to 122 games. Flynn filled up the stat sheet this season. She scored 37 goals and dished out 13 assists, scooped up 28 ground balls, forced 15 turnovers, and collected 92 draw controls. She was selected as an all-star by the league’s coaches. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said, “Julia had a breakout year as a midfielder. We asked her to do more roles than ever before, and she delivered. She is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever coached and I am looking forward to seeing what she can do next season.”

Now that the 5k is in the books, the Lake St RRFBs are being installed, and the Industrial track extension is still a few years off, the Franklin and Bellingham Rail Trail Committee is looking for feedback with regards to what we should focus our attention on in order to improve the public's experience on the Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT). Please provide your feedback via the survey link below so that we can focus the committee's efforts on meeting the needs of the community. You do not need to sign into Google to complete the survey, as all feedback is anonymous. Feel free to include as many comments as you want. We may not be able to implement all suggestions, but it will provide good direction as to where we should focus our energies.

"Floods could leave coastal communities in states like Florida and California unlivable in two decades

Sea level rise driven by global heating will disrupt the daily life of millions of Americans, as hundreds of homes, schools and government buildings face frequent and repeated flooding by 2050, a new study has found.

Almost 1,100 critical infrastructure assets that sustain coastal communities will be at risk of monthly flooding by 2050, according to the new research by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). The vast majority of the assets – 934 of them – face the risk of flood disruption every other week, which could make some coastal neighborhoods unlivable within two to three decades.

Almost 3 million people currently live in the 703 US coastal communities with critical infrastructure at risk of monthly disruptive flooding by 2050, including affordable and subsidized housing, wastewater treatment facilities, toxic industrial sites, power plants, fire stations, schools, kindergartens and hospitals."

The Town of Franklin website (franklinma.gov) was last redesigned in 2016, and is now in need of modernization. Since that time, the website host (CivicPlus) has upgraded their platform to incorporate new design features and components for municipalities to better communicate information to users via their websites.

Town staff are working on a comprehensive redesign the Town's website, seeking to uphold our commitment to an accessible, informative, and user-friendly experience for all. Recognizing that the key to a successful revamp comes from obtaining insight from our website users, we invite you to participate in this initiative.

Ryan Martin: "Fran Bositis takes his final bow after 53 years as Franklin’s boys’ soccer coach"

"As a fresh-faced 23-year-old finding his way after graduating from UMass Amherst, coaching soccer was not on the mind of Fran Bositis in 1971.

But then Franklin High athletic director Jerry Leone had limited options for Bositis, the new physical education teacher at the middle school next door.

Bositis wanted to join the coaching staff of the school’s well-established football team. But Leone could only offer Bositis the lead on boys’ varsity soccer, which was in its second year of existence.

Fifty-three years, 532 career wins, and countless athletes impacted later, Bositis recently stepped down as coach.

“It’s time to move on and start a new chapter,” said the 76-year-old Bositis. “It was never a job to me, it was my hobby because I’m not a golfer and I don’t fish.”

2024 HockomockSports Baseball Awards recognizes FHS' Cinelli, Caccavelli & Campbell

2024 HockomockSports.com Baseball Awards recognize the following Franklin High School athletes:

Rex Cinelli – Franklin – Outfield

Franklin senior Rex Cinelli wrapped up a tremendous athletic career with a strong final spring. Cinelli, who earned HockomockSports.com Player of the Year in the fall for boys soccer, was a great leader for the Panthers this spring, who reached the tournament yet again. Defensively, he was reliable and covered a lot of ground in center field. Offensively, he had 26 hits and finished with a 0.342 batting average, including a pair of doubles, along with 10 RBI, 12 runs, seven walks, and 11 stolen bases. “Rex has been a two-year starter, batted in the middle of our lineup, and was our most consistent run producer,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “He was an elite defender in center field, but more importantly he’s a tireless worker and a great leader.”

Dom Caccavelli – Franklin – Infield

Franklin senior Dom Caccavelli ended his high school career on a high note, emerging into a key piece for the Panthers this season. Caccavelli provided strong defense while playing at second base and primarily hit second in the lineup, helping set the table for Franklin’s offense. During the 2024 season, he hit 0.328 on 19 hits, including a pair of hits. He scored 18 runs and drove in seven runs, also drawing 13 walks and stealing 13 bases. “Dom is a worker and leader and maximized his ability,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “He’s always been steady defensively but this year he made significant strides offensively and led our team in runs scored, stolen bases, and walks. Dom really had a great all-around senior season.”

Austin Campbell – Franklin – Pitcher

Franklin senior Austin Campbell was one of the toughest pitchers to have success against this year and helped the Panthers get back to the state tournament yet again this season. His record (3-5) was not indicative of his dominance on the mound this year as he led the Hockomock League with 88 strikeouts, allowing a total of just 31 hits and 17 earned runs. He finished his senior season with a 2.13 ERA. “Austin has tremendous stuff on the hill,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “Which is evident by his high strikeout totals and low hit totals. Austin is a great competitor who always wants the ball in big games and big spots. He will be greatly missed.”
